All for one, All for the Pack

A decade ago, a small number of African Painted Dogs were taken from captive breeding programs and reintroduced to a nature reserve where none had set foot for over 50 years. Researchers had deemed this pack extremely important, not only for the local ecosystem but also for the genetic diversity of all painted dogs in Africa. Hope was that the pack would do well but no one had imagined they would explode in population. The pack quickly rose in numbers to being 30 strong, the majority of which were strong, healthy adults.

And then tragedy struck. Tragedy by the name of Canine Distemper. Probably introduced by ignorant and careless tourists, the disease caused the strong, healthy adults to slowly waste away one by one. Even the alpha female, Juruto, became a victim. The scientists became increasingly concerned as the numbers dwindled and, out of desperation, finally decided to try the vaccine given to domestic dogs. It worked on the dogs who had, somehow, avoided contracting the disease but not before the pack's numbers had dwindled to the bare minimum required to successfully survive. Now the pack is faced with the daunting process of having to rebuild their numbers without losing any of their current members all whilst the females are squabbling among themselves to determine who the new alpha female is.

Alpha (One male, one female)
The alphas are the leaders of the pack. Only they are allowed to breed and they mate for life. All other adults in the pack are the siblings of the alpha that matches their gender or grown offspring who chose not to disperse. They're the ones who decide when to hunt, lead the hunt, and lead attacks. Because this pack is being monitored so closely by researchers, the alphas wear tracking collars.

Hunters (3)
The dogs who always accompany the alphas on hunts or patrols. They gorge themselves on kills in order to have enough in their stomach to bring back to those who had stayed at the den. If a hunter is injured or sick, they will stay at the den along with the helpers.

Helpers (2)
These are the dogs who stay behind to keep an eye on the puppies when they are too young to join the hunt. During this period, they are fed by the hunters and alphas via regurgitation, the same method the pups are fed. They will also stick near the pups when they're old enough to join the hunt to ensure that no one gets left behind. These dogs quickly become the favorite aunt or uncle of the pups.

Pup (1)
All dogs under one year of age are considered pups. Their survival is the number one priority of the entire pack. They can begin to follow the adults around at 3-4 months and will be allowed to eat first.

Rules

1. All of Lioden's roleplay rules apply.
2. This is a semi-lit realistic roleplay. Posts must be at least 5 sentences long and absolutely no godmodding or powerplaying allowed. Realism should be maintained, meaning no dogs who are entirely black, no albinos, no chimeras, no being able to understand the humans, etc.
3. Golden Rule of RPing: Hate the character, not the player!
4. Drama Free Zone: All players are assumed to be 13+ years old and are expected to act as mature adults. I'm not your babysitter. If you have a problem with someone, take it to pm and find a way to either resolve it or agree to disagree.
5. Killing someone else's character is not allowed! AWDs rarely get into physical fights between pack mates, rarely even use physical intimidation, and therefore killing their own pack mates is unheard of.
6. In order to keep things PG-13 and avoid upsetting more sensitive members, all hunts of large prey (≥ impala size, including hogs) will *fade to black* once the prey animal has been captured. Roleplay will resume after those present at the hunt have finished eating. New applicants put the phrase it must be nice somewhere in your application.
7. In keeping suit with the PG-13 rules, all birthing, gory injuries (any time one can see that which should be covered by skin), or killing of smaller prey (impala size ≥) will be kept vague. There's not really any need to go into descriptive detail of these things. If you feel the need to, you can fade to black.
8. There will not be a particular season in which the females come into heat. Rather the alpha female will come into heat again once her last litter turns 10 months old. Put cat bull terrier in the title of a pm to me if you've read the new rules. Those who have never bred can come into heat at any time, however try to reserve this to only being once a year.
