Birds chirping and foxes darting between your paws was the last thing you expected when you stepped out of the Canyon Labyrinth. The camp of Cragclan was teeming with life. Lionesses were watching fondly as cubs tussled with hyena pups, some were resting beside jackals and wolves, and yet others were dressing themselves in beautiful adjournments. You were taken aback by creatures of all kinds mingling with the kindly clan. Even beasts of the ancient times were walking amongst the lionesses carefully, the towering carnivores taking extra care not to frighten the young cubs below.

Your observations were halted when a familiar paw made its way around you, a young male lion hopping upon your back with his hindquarters still grounded. Jovial laughter met your ears as a welcomed warmth spread through your heart. You recognized that laugh from the last time you were there. You turned your head back to try and see the familiar form of Cinderstar, who had now buried himself against the back of your neck with an excited cry of, “You’ve returned!”

You snorted with amusement, sitting down and causing the male to slide onto the ground. Once he was off of you, you turned to face him. His pale undersides were covered in soot, perhaps from running laps around the lip of the volcano again, and his special Fire Opal pendant rested in the soft looking fluff. His orange fur seemed to hold the same fiery glow that the surrounding lava had, the dark red mane as messy as ever. His dragon like eyes, which had unnerved you the first visit, were shining with warmth. His royal red cloak was fluttering to the side, the heated breeze holding it up from the embers that sparked below. He was still laying on his back, his flaming tail flicking from side to side in a relaxed manner.

You weren’t frightened when the flames flicked against your leg by accident. It felt warm, almost ticklish in fact. When you had first met the lions of Cragclan, Cinderstar had given you Apollyon’s Blessing. It protected you from the sweltering heat of the Infernal Lands, even wading through the lava would leave you unharmed. It was a sacred promise between the clan of Cragclan and Apollyon. They would follow in his paw-steps and prevent Tornclan and Apedemak from setting fourth another Ice Age. In return, Apollyon provided them safe haven in the Land of Fire, where he allowed prey herds to enter and feed on the special plant life that flourished throughout the lands.

The male gave you a fanged grin before rolling onto his paws. Once done shaking off the soot that stuck to his back, a Black Harrier settled into the lion’s mane. The sharp, yellow gaze of the black and white bird left you feeling like it had known you were coming. What was the name again? Seer? Yes, it definitely was one. Cinderstar had explained to you once that Seer’s job was to keep watch for what comes in and out of their territory. He even had the ability to see from Seer’s eyes due to a special connection the leader of Cragclan and the ancient bird always shared. This was evident when the male’s eyes took on a soft orange glow and the bird gained a dragon like pupil.

Cinderstar leaned forward, nuzzling under your neck in a much more respectful and calm greeting. “It’s so great to see you again, [King/Queen Name]. You’ve arrived at a wonderful time!” He turned, placing his tail upon your shoulder and prompting you to follow. “Today is the Great Exchange! Do you know how many injured and orphaned animals we have to take in because of Silentstar and the rest of Tornclan?” The last few words were bitter, a pitiful expression covering the usual smiling face. You gave him a soft headbutt, earning a thankful grin from the male. “Well, we sadly can’t take them forever. During the Great Exchange we welcome any lion I’ve deemed safe into our territory, allow them to purchase some of those rescued creatures and provide them a new home. We also take the time to sell adjournments that some of our lovely lionesses have created. Would you be interested in participating?”

You glanced down when a small civet leaned against your leg. It’s paws held onto you as it looked up curiously, chirping softly when it saw you had noticed it. It wormed its way out from between your paws and bounded towards a group of cubs, happily diving into the bunch as you watched the young creatures play. “Yes,” You answered, feeling warm once again, “I think I would.”
