Hunting your lionesses (ugly or not) for food and selling 100 uses of food for 1gb / SB equivalent is a good way to start. Build up from there by studding out to kings with qualities you like, or buying muties/lions with qualities you like.

Also selling event stuff for quick cash is another way people go about it. The items do sell more in later months but selling now while people are buying cheap is a good way for quick GB.

Hunt A LOT. Feed your lions every other day (or when they get ~40% hunger). Level up your ugly ladies so they can bring in the goods. What you don't use to feed, sell. Using this strategy, I'm making ~1k everyday.

Once you get to Dreamboat status, you are able to claim chased lionesses. Chased lionesses are lionesses chased from other player's dens. This gives you a chance to get pretty lionesses with more markings (and no heritage!).

Another tip: Lioden players are insanely generous. A lot of people give away lions (including muties, rare/special bases) in the main chat. I've even been given 10 GB randomly by a generous player once. Chat has helped me progress my game SO MUCH as well as stay motivated to keep playing.

Finally, just remind yourself that you can't immediately get all the cool stuff at once -- the people with cool lions and muties have been playing for a couple months to years AT LEAST.
