Megantereon was a sabertoothed feline, that lived in the middle Pleistocene and was the ancestor of Smilodon. Megantereon was actually a pretty smol kitty compared to Smilodon, but I'm sure it could still rip your face off if it had a bad day.

If we compare the skulls of this animal and a modern lion, we can clearly see the eye sockets in the Megantereon skull are a little bit lower.

Megantereon

Also, do you see that chin? It has the potential to defeat Apollyon.
Alrighty, joking aside. Time for some reconstruction. As a reference how the flesh may wrap around the head I used the X-Ray of a dead mountain lion. I know a mountain lion is not a african lion or a smilodon, but I haven't found anything else I could possibly use as a trustful reference

This is what I've come up with (please note, I'm not a paleoartist, and I'm pretty sure there are still inaccuracies since I do not have the required amount of knowledge to know how sabertooth anatomy works):

___
Addition 2019-10-20:
Thanks to Raina (Primal) (#93963)s reply on this thread, I could make a more anatomically correct reconstruction:

___

And now... the body.
This is the only picture I've found so far where a Megantereon skeleton is almost completly sideways positioned. (I know there are drawings of this species' skeleton out there, but I prefer to use photos of skeletons)

For this I've actually sticked to the description Wikipedia gave me: "Megantereon was built like a large modern jaguar, but somewhat heavier. It had stocky forelimbs with the lower half of these forelimbs lion-sized. It had large neck muscles designed to deliver a powerful shearing bite."

Alright, get a Jaguar, slap on some lion legs and a Megantereon skull, make it thicc, and done I guess.

Aaaand voila, my version of a Megantereon (this one still has the older, inaccurate head):

As said before, it's probably not really accurate, but I would like to see a version of Megantereon ingame.

This is really well done!

This is just some notes for the design from a biology student who's a paleontology nerd. Sorry if it's a little long! (The art is lovely btw. I just figured is put this since you said you didn't know much about paleoart recreation for your version)

Paleobiology is speculative mostly but you did nicely on the muscle bulk of the neck and jaw. I think the only thing that seems off is it's chin wouldn't protrude so much with it's mouth fully closed. The angle of it's chin to back part of the jaw is almost horizontal to the upper part of the skull in it's skeletal reconstruction. The skull replica pictures make the chin look far more pronounced than the actual fossil and musuem skeletal model does. It would have a very rectangular head vs the chin sticking out so much. Basically if the lower jaw was rotated clockwise slightly it would sit more naturally. Where the chin is tucked more and the back end of the jaw sits a little lower. Just dropping the back end of the jaw down a little would likely do the trick as well. Would give it a sturdier look so the jawbone and teeth are less vulnerable.

I really hope that made sense. And I mean no offense by it you did a really good job. Just feedback. (If you didn't want feedback like this then just tell me and I'll take it down)

(Side note. Try looking up skeletal and muscular anatomy references for whatever big cat you are wanting. You can find the same model displayed with each layer to give an idea of where bone ends and muscle starts. Just so you don't have to put yourself through trying to find more x-rays! )

@ Raina (Primal)
First of all, thank you!
I also really appreciate that you give me some feedback on the anatomy, I always try to get better at that! :D

I gotta say, I edited and traced the picture of the replica, so that the mouth is closed. I wasn't sure if the front teeth would touch each other when the mouth is fully closed, that was probably my mistake.
I edited the drawing of the head, maybe you can give me some input if this is more accurate?
I closed the jaw a little bit more, made the chin not as prominent as it was before and I dropped the back of the jaw a little bit lower.

Yeah that looks great! Still has the distinct head shape but is more streamline with the neck and body so it wouldn't be a vulnerability. I'm glad I could be helpful.
