What are you currently doing to attack him? My go-to methods for harder enemies are Charge and then just Bite repeatedly until I grab them (since Bite has a small chance of that, and a miss will heal you instead of a failed Grab just being bad all around), and then just Pound (for stun) and Kick (it's a bigger enemy, this might work better) until I get shaken off, I win, or I lose. This is my theory, though, as I'm not on that piece of the quest yet :)

(Speaking of which, is the Corrupted River investigation quest encounter in explore? I'm not 100% certain where it wants me to go)

@Entity The Corrupted River is an explore encounter, and will give you a button to survey the shore. Here's a very helpful guide to most of the story line (Up to 28 individual quests)

You can also use Human liver to boost your attack power for the fight a little
