Actually shredding keeps the same number of uses the item has; it is meant for Laharu daily quests later in the month! Laharu sometimes requests many small meat chunks brought to him, and because small meat chunks from explore are mainly on 2 days expiry, people cant keep them in stock, so admins gave us a way to get those chunks for Laharu.

I think it helps with donating multiple carcasses to the Food Pile (Jan. event). As you may get multiple pieces of meat from a single carcass, it multiplies the amount donated to the Food Pile, thus making it faster to unlock the community goals. More chunks usually means more uses, and uses of food count towards the goal. :)
