The Little Writing Nook
Hi there! Thanks for visiting.
Commission for MoonlightStar
Thick roots curled across the ground, ready and waiting to trip up any unwary traveller. Mist crawled across the ground, being swirled up by lion paws. Tremendous trees soared skywards; the canopy was hidden by the caress of night.
Ahead, a clearing rose. A crowd was already gathered. Here, grief mingled with excitement. Half of the clearing was cast in silver, while the other remained in shadow. Lions paced, clearly waiting, but none passed the line between light and dark.
Astrid paused at the edge of the clearing, a single paw exposed to the moon. The white fur lit up with an ethereal glow. Another lioness swept past her, vanishing into the crowd.
She followed. The moon rose higher. The light crept further. Lions began to settle into a semi-circle, with everyone, from cub to elder, finding their place.
The moon’s light finally ghosted against the far end of the clearing. Silence fell, and from the shadows, stepped a shimmering figure. He was a sunset personified, rich purples and blacks rolling across his fur and fading into the barest hints of gold. Molten silver scattered parts of his body, glowing with a brightness the moon would envy.
The pride lowered themselves to the ground in respect. None moved as the deceased king paced forwards. Astrid held her breath, barely glancing up to see the king better.
He smiled at her. It was a wise smile, and he dipped his head to her.
“Rise, Astrid, one of stars and rebirth. Take your place as Queen.”
Astrid stifled a gasp, straightening to look the past king in the eye. Without further word, he vanished.
Lions approached her in a blur of congratulations. They, one-by-one, left the clearing. The last lioness brushed past her, melting into shadow.
As Astrid made to leave, she cast a glance back to the clearing. One paw remained under moonlight, and like molten silver, it glowed.
Rithhirim was born to a pride that had no room for him, and so was cast away to wander and most likely die. Fortunately, he was found by some huntresses and brought to Luminus' pride. The kind king offered the cub food and shelter for the night, then presented him with a choice. Stay, or go. Rithhirim chose to stay.
Luminus trained the younger lion, helping him become benevolent and kind to others. The rest of the pride quickly grew fond of Rithhirim, and were eager to accept him as the heir to leadership when Luminus made the announcement. The transition of power was a peaceful one, with Rithhirim still taking advice from Luminus up until the Grandpaw died.
Now, Rithhirim himself grows elderly, so he trains his own heir, Savageslate, in the same way Luminus trained him.
You carefully pad forwards, ears pricked in case of any other lions nearby. A run-in would be... unsavoury, especially if it was one of the crueler kings that ruled these lands.
The thumping of paws comes from behind you, and you whirl around, alarmed, to be greeted by five lionesses jogging towards you dragging two carcasses between them. When they see you, they stop.
One of them steps towards you, a scar slashing across her eye, "In the name of King Rithhirim, explain yourself."
You dip your head, "Apologies, m'lady, I merely wish to pass through."
"You need to come with us. The King must be informed."
"Of course, m'lady. I wish no harm on anyone here."
"We shall see. Rosyridge, Amberpuma, please escort our guest to the watering-hole."
Two other lionesses step forth, and flank you on either side. You are escorted by the hunting party to a large watering-hole, hidden by several trees. Lions peer at you as you pass. Two of the younger huntresses leave to store the prey, while the leader, Rosyridge & Amberpuma lead you to a large stone monument with an older male lion atop it. Blue gems and glistening gold decorate his body, and shimmering red wings stretch from his back. He stands to greet the huntresses, wings flaring.
"Rustonyx," he says, "What is the meaning of this?"
Rustonyx flicks her tail towards you, "My King, we found him wandering the territory on the way back. I though you would wish to speak with him."
"You were correct," his attention turns to you, "Tell me, stranger, what purpose do you have in this land?"
"Great king, I only wish to pass through. I apologise if I have intruded."
"Very well. I shall have Rustonyx accompany you, and you may meet with my pride if you wish. Mayhaps we could be allies in the future, and trade?"
You dip your head gratefully, "Thank you, I would appreciate that."
