It was Halloween night. It was dark and foggy, the only source of light a few jack-o'-lanterns. It was late, so there were no children in costumes roaming the neighborhood. The homes were silent.
The sound of hooves clopping against the asphalt of the street could be faintly heard as a horse trotted down the way. At a passing glance, the horse seemed dark in coat and eye color with an elegant air about it. However, if given closer scrutiny by someone who cared to look, the horse’s hooves all had a slight tapered point and the dark eyes were not eyes at all, but instead empty sockets. The rider seemed to be looking for something, though that was probably more difficult than said someone would think, given that he had no head.

He was soon joined by a cloaked figure holding a scythe, which seemed to be made out of bones that almost gleamed in the darkness. The figure tipped its head at the rider in greeting. They stopped after a few steps and waited. A third figure emerged from the shadows, this one tall and with shaggy fur. Twisted horns and cloven hooves shone in the faint jack-o’-lantern lights.

The two aforementioned manifestations came to a halt, greeting the looming creature with a bit more reverence and less familiarity. Everything was silent, the wind motionless. The rider and cloaked figure remained still in the animalistic biped’s fixed gaze before it slowly stepped aside and took its place on the opposite side of the horse. After a breath, the trio began a synchronized yet leisurely walk.

If one were completely focused on the otherworldly beings, they would miss the almost transparent wisps of vaguely human-shaped apparitions drifting in and out of visibility a few feet behind. The street lights flickered as the thick, unearthly fog swelled. It seemed to reach for the travelers, like a dying man grasping for his last breath. The three slowly were enveloped, vanishing as though stepping through a gateway to another world.
