WHAT IS SWIMMER SYNDROME? Swimmer syndrome is a rare condition in which a cub is unable to physically stand or walk, but instead lies flat on its chest and abdomen with hind legs extended behind and its forelegs extended to the front and/or sides. The only motion the cub is capable of is paddling its limbs as though it is swimming. Although not lethal in and of itself, swimmer syndrome can cause an inability to stand or walk, and due to the extra amount of time laying down during crucial growth periods, it can also cause other medical issues, which can be fatal. Individuals with this mutation would die within the ages of 5-7 months due to complications with their malformation https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/Swimming-Puppy-Syndrome-in-Cats-Gomes-Santana/4cd9917bc2e715c9b8e58be583090fd732e7b15f/figure/0 https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fonlinelibrary.wiley.com%2Fdoi%2Ffull%2F10.1111%2Fj.1748-5827.2006.00069.x&psig=AOvVaw0j_99bC-ZbsfmyzfEI_Kn8&ust=1673369285779000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CBAQjRxqFwoTCNiFwcD4uvwCFQAAAAAdAAAAABAS |
