Okay, so,
I've been drawing for years. Practically since I could hold a pencil.
2019 - 2021 were my tracing years, and years i'm not proud of. I was not confident in my ability to create original pieces - and so I'd trace over the art of others, and fill in the lines to create my own OC's.
To be fair, I never claimed the lineart was mine. I never showcased it on online, and when I showed people in real life, I disclosed that it was traced. However, this does not excuse such behaviour. if you do not have the artists permission to use their line work (I did not), then don't do it.
The purpose of this thread, *and* this redraw, is to showcase and express how quickly one can improve without tracing, and how tracing is not necessary. So, without further ado, I introduce to you the monstrosity that is the original: (If anyone knows the OG artist, please comment so I can credit them!)
Ahhh, how horrifically ugly.
The character show in this piece was my OC at the time, named 'Ashy'. She was a Warrior Cats OC. I believe at some point I changed her name to Cindertail though, in representation of the 'venomous barbs on the tip of her tail and chest fur'. (Seriously. What was I doing.)
At least there was some creativity put into it though!..... Kinda....
Okay, before I show the new version, I wanna list the things I have changed. * Ear hoop replaced by a dog fang and moved to the opposite ear
* Tweaked Leg and tail markings
* Increased fur length
* Removed 'venomous barbs'
* Added hair poof (a nudge to my 2020 art style)
* Changed nose, paw-pad, and inner ear colour
* Adjusted pose
* Adjusted expression
* Swapped the background for a gaussian-blurred one
* Subtly lightened the lower chest fur colour
* Removed black ears
* Removed forehead stripe
I tried to keep the creativity of the design, and I had originally planned to keep the 'barbed fur', but ended up forgetting so I just scrapped it
and now, the moment of truth, my updated version!
It's not my best work, and the anatomy could definitely be better. But to be honestly I wasn't too serious about this piece, I was just having fun.
(I am not looking for advice or criticism by the way, so please don't give me any.)
Anyways, no shame at all to active tracers. It usually comes from a place of self-doubt, insecurity, or other shame-related things. Tracing can be a great tool to practice anatomy, but if you're going to do it, PLEASE get the original artists permission, OR trace free-to-use bases. It's really that simple.
