○ Crystal Waterhole: The Crystal Waterhole has always been neutral ground and was the the place where gatherings were held.
Flamewalker Pride Camp:
The camp of the Flamewalker Pride is located in a cave below a rock formation, which lies in the eastern part of their territory. The cave is big enough so that everyone can sleep there together. The Emperor or Empress speaks from the rock formation to their pride.
Cinderblaze Pride Camp:
The camp of the Cinderblaze Pride is located underneath a big jackalberry tree that is located in the northern part of their territory. The lions have dug several caves underneath the tree. One for the king and his family, one for the warriors, one for elders, one for the shaman, one for the apprentices and a nursery.
Nightsong Pride Camp:
The Nightsong Pride has their camp in an abandoned human settlement, which is located relatively in the middle of their territory. It has been built of stone and most buildings erected crumpled ruins, except for a big house in the middle. The pride sleeps in this house. It has three stories. All adult lions sleep in the first floor. The second floor is for cubs and apprentices. The third floor is shared by the king/queen and their family and the shaman.
Silvershine Pride Camp:
The Silvershine Pride camp is a big marula tree, which is located in the middle of their territory. It is likely the oldest and biggest tree in the Scorching Sun Savannah. All lions sleep out in the open under the tree, except the shaman. They have a cave nearby, where they store herbs and treat ill or injured lions. Though most shamans choose to sleep with the others, if they don’t have to treat someone. ○

○ 1. The word of the Emperor stands above all else.
2. A king may rule his pride however he wishes as long as he doesn’t go against the Emperor.
3. Those who break the law shall be punished by their king. All punishments must be approved by the Emperor.
4. Once a crown prince has been chosen, he must be betrothed to a member of the royal family from one of the other prides.
5. A lion may choose to live in any pride that is part of the Empire they want.
6. A lion’s loyalties lie with the Empire before everything else.
7. A lion may only kill to survive.
8. Cubs and elders must be fed and cared for before everyone else. ○

○ The lions of the Empire believe that the spirits of their ancestors who were good lions enter a place that is called Emerald Meadows. The Emerald Meadows are a beautiful savannah, that has always pleasant weather and enough food and water. Their ancestors guide them from there by sending living lions visions. Those lions are usually shamans as they have a strong connection to the ancestors, but rarely the ancestors send visions to regular lions. A shaman may ask for guidance by setting themselves in a trance. The spirits of lions who were bad while they were alive enter a place known as Dire Lands. The Dire Lands are a wasteland where food and water is scarce. ○

○ Emperor/Empress: The emperor rules over the Scorching Sun Empire and is the king of the Flamewalker Pride. They have the final say in all decisions and can add or abolish laws. This rank is traditionally given to male lions.
Empress/Emperor Consort: The empress consort is the mate of the emperor and rules alongside them. They have almost equal power to the Emperor/Empress, but cannot go against orders the Emperor/Empress has given. The Emperor/Empress has no say in who their consort is as they have been betrothed once the Emperor/Empress has been chosen as Crown Prince/-ess and once a betrothal has been made, it cannot be broken.
King/Queen: The King/Queen rules over their pride and have almost full authority. They cannot go against the orders of the Emperor/Empress or change laws, but other than that they can rule however they please. This rank is traditionally given to male lions.
Queen/King Consort: The queen/king consort is the mate of the King/Queen and rules alongside them. They have almost equal power, but the Queen/King Consort cannot go against orders the King/Queen has given. The King/Queen cannot choose their Consort as they have been betrothed.
Crown Prince/-ess: The Crown Prince/-ess is the heir of the King/Queen. They are typically chosen then the King/Queen is getting older and feels that they need an heir. They don’t have to be the oldest cub of the King/Queen and Queen/King Consort, but has to be one of their cubs. They get taught everything they need to know to rule by their parents. Once they get chosen they have to be betrothed to a member of the royal family from one of the other prides. Male lions are traditionally chosen for this rank.
Shaman: A shaman is a lion who possesses great knowledge of herbs and it is their duty to heal injured and ill lions. They also have a special connection to the ancestors and receive guidance from them. Typically there is only one shaman in each pride. A shaman chooses their successor as a cub and teaches them everything they need to know as an apprentice. Shamans remain apprentices until their mentor passes away.
Warriors: They hunt and fight for the pride. Warriors are divided into two groups hunters and sentries. The main duty of hunters is providing food, while sentries mainly patrol the territory. Both groups will take on the duties of the other. Hunters are traditionally female and sentries male.
Broodmothers: They look after the pride’s cubs, while their mothers perform their duties. Broodmothers are traditionally female.
Apprentices: They are adolescent lions and learn everything they need to know for their future roles.
Cub: All lions under a year. They don’t have any duties, but get taught a few important things for survival.
Elders: Lions, who are too old to perform their roles. They are greatly respected and cared for by the others. ○

○ History ○
○ The history of the Scorching Sun Empire begins countless generations ago with four lions: the two brothers Flamewalker and a Cinderblaze who had to leave their pride, because it had been taken over by another lion who wanted all potential heirs of the previous king gone, Nightsong who left her pride because she didn’t agree with the decisions her new king made and Silvershine who had to leave her pride because she refused to accept a betrothal. They met shortly after they left their prides and decided to travel together. While travelling they decided to create their own pride and found others who joined them. Eventually they came across a savannah and settled down there. Now that they had found a place to live they needed to decide who would be their first king or queen. It was pretty clear that most wanted either Flamewalker or Cinderblaze as their king. Since they couldn’t decide between the two brothers, they decided to rule together. Silvershine was first to leave to create her own pride. A few lionesses followed her and they decided to be a lionesses only pride. Nightsong left shortly after with a few lions. Not because there was any bad blood between them, but because she wanted to do things differently than Flamewalker and Cinderblaze. Not long after the two brothers started fighting. The cause of their fights isn’t known, but soon it got so bad that they split. Though the tensions between their prides never ceased, things were good for a while and the prides were named after their founders. Not long after there was an especially hard dry season with a drought and a famine. The prides survived and named their home Scorching Sun Savannah in memory of those who were lost. For a long time things were relatively peaceful. There were border skirmishes and battles between the Flamewalker Pride and Cinderblaze Pride quite regularly and rarely between other prides too, but no major conflicts. Until a few generations ago the Flamewalker Pride under the rule of Mottledlight declared war on the Cinderblaze Pride. They fought for a few months until Mottledlight killed the king of the Cinderblaze Pride and joined the prides together under the Scorching Sun Empire. One pride was not enough for him, so he turned to the Nightsong Pride next. The Silvershine Pride offered them help, but the current king of the Nightsong Pride declined as he wanted resolve this peacefully. Their peaceful approach didn’t work and the Empire surprised them with an attack. The Nightsong Pride stood no chance and had to surrender. Now that the Nightsong Pride was part of the Empire too Mottledlight turned to the Silvershine Pride. The Silvershine lionesses stood no chance against three prides and had to surrender. At first most lions were bitter and no one from the other prides was quite happy about being part of the Empire. With each generation that has passed the lions grew more used to the Empire and eventually accepted it mostly. Recently a mysterious illness plagued the Empire. The shamans managed to defeat it a short time ago, but many were lost during the months the illness ravaged the prides. ○

○ At birth cubs are named by their parents with a one word name. Once a lion becomes an adult they receive their full name, by adding a suffix to their name. Close friends and family members may call a lion by their birth name, but that depends entirely on individual preferences. ○

○ - Lions do not view sexuality the same way as humans do. For them it is totally normal for two lionesses or lions to become mates. Trans lions are also widely accepted.
- It is also quite common for a lion to have more than one mate. The only exception to this is the king or queen of a pride as they are only allowed to have one official mate.
- Kings and queens can have as many affairs as they want. However it is strongly discouraged for them to have cubs with other partners than their consort. Those cubs are rarely given royal status and aren’t eligible to become crown prince/-ess.
- Lions can be in a relationship with lions from another pride within the Empire. While it is strongly encouraged that they pick a pride they both want to live in, it is not required.
- Lions may have a relationship with a lion outside the Empire. Eventually they have to decide whether their partner joins the Empire, they leave the Empire or they break up with their partner.
- Lionesses may choose whatever male they want to father their cubs and aren’t obligated to tell anyone who the father is. ○
