You were probably expecting some type of dramatic introduction. Well I'm sorry to tell you that's not going to happen. Our story isn't a fairy tale, nor is it full of magical elves and dancing trees. Perhaps you were looking forward to a normal love story, one with a happy ending? If that is the case, then find it somewhere else. Because in this tale, nothing is normal. Enough of that, let's get back to it. I'll start at the beginning, where everything started.

Long ago, society was run by machines and computers. It consumed the hearts and minds of the people it touched. In that age, talking to someone was just a few swipes away, even if they were right across the room. Humans opted to focus on advancements in this technology instead of the real problems that the world faced. Starvation, disease, and greed ran rampant in countries where these machines did not exist. But everyone seemed to turn a blind eye, and those that didn't ended up scorned and ignored by the masses.

At the same time it was tearing people apart, it was also bringing them together. A whole new kind of war was created. The destruction of someone's entire life was just a click away, separated only by a thin screen. Important documents and pictures could be shared with the whole world if someone became angry enough at somebody else. Thus the world was slowly torn apart...

In 3030, a scientist created a disease that had the capability to wipe out an entire country. Maybe the whole human race. Once word of its existence got out, the world leaders came together to discuss what should happen to it. The more peaceful countries opted to destroy the disease, but those more inclined to war each wanted to keep it in their possession. It was obvious that whoever held this powerful weapon would rule the entire world.

With the combination of technology and hatred, the entire human race went to war. It raged for centuries, destroying powerful countries, creating famine, and fanning the flames. But it all stopped once the weapon went missing. The world was in tatters, there was no law, no one to lead. And so a man named Jeremiah Darkwood began to rebuild his country. He took control, crushing any rebellions and creating new rules to follow and live by. Scientists and inventors came together to make new, yet simpler machines. Scars from the past still existed, but life was beginning to get easier. The earth began to heal. Soon others followed in Jeremiah's footsteps. Kingdoms rose from the dust and ruins, replacing the old.

The weapon that had caused the war remained missing, hidden away by the very man that had created it, and protected by someone very powerful. But not all evil was gone from existence... bad men, power hungry and unscrupulous, still roamed. Searching for that one thing that would give them ultimate power. This is where the true story begins. Are you strong enough to get through?

"Hm..." It was a low sound from the back of his throat as if he were thinking, leaning back in his seat and staring at the deary sky. Clouds hung low over the polluted air that was the poorer part of the kingdom, making everything a striking grey-beige. "I don't really think you're in any position to be arguing with me. After all, you are the captive." Another little wag of his finger, this time not even turning to look back before putting both hands behind his head.

The slums of the kingdom was where a lot of activity took place, both for himself, the world he belonged to and the Society. Quite a few operations ran out of here, though the Society operated on all levels and even had people on the highest rungs of polite society. Nonetheless, they didn't want to get their hands dirty. Byron didn't care; he liked to be active, but it did get quite harsh and he'd been shot at more than once. But in the slums, it was all handshakes and bribery. People knew each other, whether they liked it or not.

"Lookin' kinda stormy today." He wasn't talking to anyone in particular, mostly to himself as the church loomed into view. An imposing thing it was, or at least it was once upon a time. Now it was a shell, quietly watching over the section of town. The mechanical horse continued to clink along the path, against the outer walls and heading into a maze-like labyrinth of passages that would eventually lead them to their destination.

The dark corridors stank of sewer and waste, the long walls lit by little more than oil lamps. A hush fell over them, as if speaking could blow any of them out at any moment.
