About Us

Service Dog Handlers of Lioden was created on January 4th, 2018! The goal of this clan is to act as an on-site support network for current and former handlers, to raise awareness and educate those curious about what service dogs do and how important they are to their handlers! But we don't just welcome service dogs - use a mini pony? Have an ESA? We welcome those too! Basically, we're people who have had our freedom returned to us by some really smart critters!

FAQ

Q: How do I join?
A: Just click the link provided at the top! You can also click HERE

Q: I don't have a service dog and don't need one! Can I join?
A: Yes! Everyone is welcome. As long as you remain respectful and abide by both our rules and the lioden ToS, you're more than welcome to hang out, join the discussion or lend a hand!

Q: Is all you guys talk about your service dogs?
A: Nope. As long as it abides by ToS/Forum rules, you can chat to your hearts content. Brag about your new stud :P.

Q: Service dogs and ESAs are different, but you say you welcome their (ESAs) handlers here?
A: Yep! As said before, everyone is welcome. If you recieve animal assistance of any kind, you're included under that umbrella, but understand - Service dogs and ESAs do not have the same public access levels as one another!

Do you know his genetic background? because sometimes aggression can be genetic. But you also have to correct the behavior. If the hurt you, grab a flabby part of their skin (it won't hurt it'll just shock them, no matter how much they yell) Let go after a couple seconds and if the message isn't received continue... they should be wagging happily within a couple of seconds.. this is not for dogs who are past puppy stages...

Bentley is too fast for me so I can’t grab him
His background is full of show dogs so I doubt it’s genetic.

Oh Show dogs doesn't mean that they don't have an aggressive background.. My family breeds and once my mentor accidently bred with a lady who bred for showing but had bred with aggressive dogs... It took forever for her to breed that out of her lines. What breed is he? Just so you know it doesn't matter I'm just wondering...

Hello! I'm glad I stumbled upon this clan.

A bit about myself:
I volunteer for a service dog organization here run out of North Texas, USA. I run the puppy raiser program and help people who are early in training their doggos get a strong start so the head trainer can focus on behavior issues and dogs that are further along in training!

Later on in life I will most likely require a service doggo of my own but for now I'm waiting to see how my Lupus and POTS progress. My goal if that happens is for a medical response/light mobility male English Cream Golden Retriever which I will train myself with the support of the organization I volunteer with.

I love taking time to educate people in terms of the difference between SDs, Therapy Dogs, and ESAs, as well as the American service dog laws (ADA and FHA regs on them). SDiT laws in Texas I know and I know credible websites with information on other states SDiT laws.

Welcome! I'm glad you're here! =D
That's really neat. While Bear's not a program dog, I hope to get involved some day so I can help others. Still not entirely sure what I'm doing with my life but I know it's something animal related :')

Anyway, for those reasons I hope you'll never need one, but if you do, best of luck finding a match <3 Personally I love Labs, and I'm thinking my next partner will be an English. I don't have a lot of fellow teams around where I live but there is an older gentleman and his English that I train with on occasion and I just love her, she's such a loving goof. Super smart though.

Thanks for introducing yourself! Feel free to grace us with your knowledge whenever, I'm sure we'd all appreciate it! I would anyway, there's always more to learn <3

This is more of a question as to why my dog may be the way he is; my parents seem to be of the opinion he's inbred (which I would believe given the horrid place we rescued from).

Anyhow; I have a Lhasa Apso called Podge (it was a temporary name that stuck as we were all undecided), and he's really relaxed. Like. It's ridiculous (he's super skittish around boxes and bags) but with people? He'll tolerate anything.

He can be held like a baby, any way at all, and he just doesn't care. He just...Sprawls everywhere, and once you stroke him, if you stop, he pines for attention. Pawing you, rubbing and pushing himself on you, even headbutting phones out of occupied hands. He's not lazy, but at the same time he totally is, he also adores kids despite the fact my two year old niece is super clumsy and not always so nice to him.

I know this seems to describe a laid back dog, but I can't describe it. It's like...When he licks people, he only uses the tip of his tongue and mooches off after doing it once, he won't take food quickly either. It's like he's...Considering how to take it.

That being said; do you think he'd make a good therapy dog?

Good with people is a start .But you saying things like he's skittish around boxes and bags makes me question if he will be able to behave in public to be able to perform therapy dog work. I would work on getting him over those fears and reassess after.

Well he needs to be good around chains, wheel chairs, and you need to get rid of that skittishness around boxes... a good way to get them ok with things with loud noises on the other hand is empty water bottles. We use them with our puppies to desensitize them.

I should have specified that it's only at home; moving plastic bags and moving boxes. While out or somewhere new, he's oddly fine fine. I'll definitely check it out though.

Some dogs are just naturally pretty laid back, even if, as a breed they're supposed to be higher strung. I think he'd make a great therapy dog, it sounds like he's perfectly capable, might need some training depending on what you consider a therapy dog (for yourself? to take into schools/senior homes?). Key thing is being okay with people (I say with an SDiT who would prefer if people stopped existing), objects are usually just a matter of training (When I first got Bear, he was really worried about Vacuums - now I can put the vacuum on him while he lays there looking at me like I'm an idiot - which I am but that's besides the point xD).

But yeah, I'd work on his fears with the objects and then decide, not all dogs are cut out for it- like I believe Bear will only be working for a few years. He loves the work, just not the people so I'm assuming he's gonna wash out pretty soon. But it'd be worth trying your pupper out and seeing if you can work with him on the object fear c:
