Okay this is my first suggestion so please don't murder me if it's not completely good idea.

But being my bored self I was going through my lionesses and placing some backgrounds onto them, then I got to a lioness that has 2 newborn cubs, she had a background however her cubs have the default background.

To me that doesn't make a lot of scene, if they are in her picture why is her background not theirs? So why not have cubs that are under 5 (?) months and still with their mother have their mothers background. The background could only have 1 use left on it so if removed it would be destroyed and not a way for players to farm backgrounds.
This also allows players that want to decorate their cubs to remove the old background and place a new one on it.
The background will be removed when the cubs are older than 5 months or abandoned and be replaced with the default.

It's a small change but I think it would make the game better and I know it would stop the urge for me to rip out my eyes when the cubs and mother's backgrounds don't match lol.

Edit: So a lot of players are pointing out it would be annoying for players that mass breed cubs, we could have a option in the setting to turn off this function off like with the pregnancy pose. :)
