The Pride

Hierarchy
(Please note that the Bitterroot Waterhole isn't a pride — it is a territory that three lion prides share! My kings always rule over the FatePride.

MANE 👑
The mane is the male leader of the pride - the one who defends and protects his young, and decides who should stay or leave the pride. Has all of the pride's control under his paws, if he gets killed, his cubs and adolescents are also killed.

HUNT CHIEF 💎
The highest-ranked lioness in the pride, the hunt chief is usually the mane's mate or conselour and helps with managing the pride. Hunt chiefs will always hunt and guide the pride on how to get food. The secondary leader of the pride, reigns over less things than the mane.

HEIR 🌹
A possible male successor to the mane. When the mane is way too sickly, injured or simply old, a group of young no-manes is chosen, and the strongest one is determined by a duel between them. The winner gets the privilege of joining the pride and becoming the heir. The heir must be fertile, strong and healthy enough in order to lead the pride. When the mane dies, the heir shall take over.

HEIRESS 🌺
The heir's chosen future mate. Along with the heir, the heiress is chosen when the hunt chief and mane are sickly, old or way too injured. She is promised to become the heir's mate in the future, also becoming the new hunt chief when the current one dies. The heiress is usually a young lioness part of the pride, as pridelesses are seen as unworthy.

SUB-MALE 💜
The sub-males are subordinate males who either didn't get chased away by the age of 10 to 11 months old or are one of the mane's siblings. They have the job of border-patrolling and defending against no-manes. When a male reaches 10 or 11 months, he will be banished if there are already 2 sub-males, or if the mane simply doesn't want him in the pride anymore. Sub-males are also responsible for training the pride's heirs.

HUNTRESS 🌲
Every young lioness' common dream is to eventually become a huntress. Huntresses are responsible for serving the pride; as they provide food and territory for the group. Unless it's a special occassion, all 2 year old lionesses will automatically become huntresses and receive a name that reflects their skills.

CUBMOTHER 🌻
A cubmother is a cubsitter in the pride. If a lioness is disabled, can't work or simply doesn't want to become a huntress, she can take on the role of a cubmother. Cubmothers will also be temporary mothers to cubs whose mother is absent.

HERBALIST 🌿
A pride herbalist's goal is heal the pride. A lion can't choose to become a herbalist, as when a cub is born, the mane will decide if they must become one or not. There can only be a herbalist at once.

TRAVELER 🌼
At 5 months old, a female cub chosen by the mane will be asked if she would like to be a traveler. A traveler's job is to travel to prides and stay there for some days upon 5 months old. A traveler's job is dangerous, since who knows what must be inside these prides? However, only the bravest cubs will take on this rank. Upon 10 years old, a traveler will be returned to her pride forever and won't travel anymore. Then, she can choose to become a huntress or cubmother until she retires.

ELDER 🍂
An elder is a lion that can no longer work for the pride and is now resting. Lions usually become elders at 12 years old; but a disabled lion can retire earlier. Elders will be fed first along with cubs, and will be taken good care of before it's their time to go.

APPRENTICE 🍃
Lions that are 1 year old become apprentices by custom. Apprentices are lions learning the manners of the pride, and based on their gender and future rank, they will train hunting, cubsitting or fighting. When a lion becomes 2 years old, they are free from the apprentice rank. All apprentices are trained by mentors chosen by the mane.

CUB 🌱
Cubs are the youngest members of the pride, being protected by everyone else. Lions under the age of 1 year receive the cub rank by custom, and unless they're too sickly or injured, will become apprentices at 1 year old. Cubs are to be defended and are prohybited from straying away from their mothers and cubmothers. They are under their watch until they are old and trusted enough to explore. A female cub doesn't have a name, but she does have a nickname she will be called for until she receives her huntress name.
