"I want to be you sky and your sea. I want you to think of me in all you see. I want to shelter you when you can't sleep. I'll be your cloud, your wave, your peace"

Dalamus was a lonely cub. Their litter mates were not interested in the same things as them, their pride found them odd, and in fact most animals couldn't help to stop and ponder how such a perfectly average cub could be so perfectly abnormal. It was a lonely life, despite so many faces around.

It was hard for Dalamus to accept that this was just how they were. One day, when looking at the sky, they imagined themselves flying. Up and up, way up high, swimming in those blues, whites, chasing the little black flecks that were birds. So captivated by the sky, Dalamus didn't notice the odd hooved beast that had approached them. It said; 'Dear child, what is it that you are searching for in the sky? Surely your family are not far off, you should make your way to them.'

Dalamus replied; 'I'm not searching for anything. I'm just appreciating it.' Of course, this confused the beast, who asked, approaching cloer; 'And what is 'it' that you are searching for?' Well this gave the cub pause- i mean, they knew they were looking for something, but they hadn't the slightest clue how to express it to the voice. Taking their eyes away from the sky above, they found themself snout to snout with a large, woolied looking buffalo. Although- to call it a buffalo was only half appropriate. They were rather odd themself, with the hind end of a big cat, covered in blotches, and their front half that of a water buffalo. Except even THAT was only half right a description.

The sight instantly captivated the young Dalamus, who stared. 'You do not cower?' the beast spoke, nostrils flaring in a snort. Dalamus could only shake his head, struck by the creature's appearance. 'No. No, I think you are absolutely wonderful.' This surprised the beast.

'I was searching for a way to wear the sky.' Dalamus said finally, as if finally comfortable with expressing themself. 'If i had a pelt as beautiful as the sky, maybe the animals would stare at me with the same wonder.' This coming from such a young cub wounded the beast, and yet, moved him greatly. Dragging his large front hoof forward, the beast began to draw in the dry earth, something Dalamus seemed greatly intereted in.

'That is what you want then? To be adored?' Dalamus shook their head, making a face as they struggled to form their thoughts into words. 'I just think.. that the sky is loved because its so big and different from us. I thought that if i could wear it, maybe I would be loved too.' With the lines drawn in the dirt, the beast knelt on his knees before it, biting his tongue until blood beaded and dribbled into the earth. Dalamus could only watch such a strange act.

Returning to his feet, the beast mixed the blood into a paste with the earth, whispering softly to himself. When he was done, the raised his hoof, and pressed it to the cub's head. Only, it didn't touch him. No, it passed through, behind him and onto- oh dear..

Dalamus jumped back and away from the beast, staring down in shock where their body lay on the ground. 'I-' They stammered, wide eyes locked onto their body. 'I died-' The beast nodded, sympathetic. His hoof lay against the lifeless cub's forehead. 'How long has it been?' Dalamus asked, scared and saddened.

'Just the night. You wandered off too far. I could hear your father's calls for you.' the beast answered, removing his hoof. 'I am sending you home with a blessing. You can have a piece of the sky to wear, so long as you keep your eyes open to all that is around you.'

And like a dream, the cub awoke to the morning sky above. They were cold and dirty, but alive. True to the beast's word, Dalamus could hear the calls of their father from across the plains. They ran as fast as they could manage on their short legs, eager finally to get home to the pride that they had once felt so apart from. Upon bursting into the clearing, Dalamus found his family- but they did not run to greet them. No, they stopped with wide expressions to stare.

Their approach was slow, circling Dalamus. But it didnt take long for them to bunt inward to comfort the lost cub. Also true to his word, the beast had granted the cub a coat fitting of them. Because longing for more, head held at the sky, they had failed to notice the ones who stared at them with the same love.

And so, Dalamus became known as the cub who carried the sky.
