Ok, perhaps Im just spoiled but here is my idea.

The forums - really good to have, lots of information and you are following them all...some...or...when you remember to look..

Some of them are more important than others, like perhaps your salesthread or perhaps your studthread. In the begining you maybe stalks it every other chance you get but after awhile it may be a little less. Sometimes you perhaps get a note from someone a little frustrated that you havent replied and they are worried the lion they REALLY wanted to but is gone. Other times you spot the message but as you message the person they have given up the wait and bought something else - you have missed a sale. Perhaps not the worst since you stepped in elephant dung when you were exploring but still...

My suggestion is this - notifications to threads - when you get a new message you get a little "note" about it. When I mentioned it in the chat someone said it had been something like it but that people was abit worried about spams. Well, of course this would only be activated (and deactivated) with the help of trusty ol' Mr Checkbox :)

So, Forumnotifications ONLY when you have checked the box, not otherwise. You can also turn this feature off by unchecking the box.
