Still a bit sleepy but lemme see if I can explain these well xD

Possible 'plots':

1.) The dragons aren't the one whom chose the elemental; but rather the elemental would go into a clan (or pack or pride; whatever a group of dragons is called) and pick some to wield their own element since dragons wouldn't have any element to begin with (or something)

Example: The fire elemental came into the group of dragons and picked a few who would be able to breath the element of fire. Water chose a few to have the powers of water and so on.

The dragons could leave the group and form a type of group with the elemental or something or stay and help the powerless dragons from the original group.


2. The games.

Every few years a different elemental dragon or two will come searching for a companion to make a pact with. Being of such noble blood, the dragons choose to hold special 'games' when it's time for them to seek companions.

They would pit special creatures against others (anthros, humans, humans whom tun into animals; I don't care) whom have the same elements as it. The winners (our characters) would perfect their chosen element under the guidance of the dragons.

Example:

The fire apprentice had finally defeated the last opponent, gaining the favor of the mighty Master of Fire. The fire dragon decided to take the small fire apprentice under its wing and teach it to become the best fire wielder of their time.

Both are great. I think I like 1 more though, it has a nice mythos feel to it. How about, The elementals are reborn when their Dragon companion dies, and their reincarnated self immediately goes to a clan of dragons, and picks out a new guardian, and gives the gift of fire/water/ext to their new guardian's family as payment for the guardian's protection.
