Hello! I'm Scy and I'm pretty much just a hobbyist. I like to dabble in digital art and sculpting, mostly, with some traditional thrown in. I'm starting this thread to help out new artists and also because I need to take small breaks while doing commissions and/or studying. If you're curious about my art, it's all on my Tumblr. I will be happy to: 1) Give short critiques 2) Redline pieces (meaning I will take your art and draw over it to show you where the problems are) - although I may not do many of these, depending on how busy/tired I am. 3) Give any tips I can, although there are many, many more experienced artists who have tutorials and videos that will explain things better than I could. I will not: 1) Do free art for you. Sorry, I'm already kinda swamped. 2) Coddle you. Please don't ask for a critique and then scream and pout about how I just don't like 'your style'. I'm not a mean or harsh judge of art (we all had to start somewhere!) but if you ask for a critique, that's what you're going to get. If any other artist wants to chime in with advice or just chat, feel free! 0 players like this post! Like? Edited on 06/11/15 @ 20:05:38 by Scyllarus (#26842) |

I have other peoples opinions, but they're close people and who knows if they're lying to me >.> Free Balloons Roller Coaster Actually, if you can or would could you just give me a run down on my little gallery? Hello I'm planing to re-work on some of my piece this summer in order to improve them, maybe can you help me about it? First, I'd like to improve this one : http://seiden-kaczka.deviantart.com/art/Eden-Seiwa-491773547 I know the biggest problem on it are the hairs. Maybe do you have some tips to draw hairs? I tried following some tutorials on DA but can't achieve anything.... And I tried for hours. Also, about everything else on that drawing..... What should I change? Maybe everything, but.... I don't know. 0 players like this post! Like? |

@Valentine I can tell you're very meticulous about your art. All your lines look carefully planned and placed down. I like the bright use of color, too c: And the silhouette of the carnival/roller coaster is pretty neat! What you should probably practice is loose sketching. Your people especially look stiff and formal and your lines are 'furry' - which means you etch over them many times to get them to look right. You'll get a more natural look that way. I can't really say anything to technical aspects like shading since it's not really there. If you want a softer feel with the colored pencils, try coloring with the side of the pencil rather than the point to shade the colors into each other. @Seiden Too much detail on the hair. I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but keep in mind that when you see a furry animal, do you notice every single hair on its body? No, you get an impression of hair. I like this tutorial: http://www.deviantart.com/art/A-Fur-Tutorial-Part-1-213293289 The other problem is that a Natu is a bird-based Pokemon, right? You can't use the same idea on feathers since they're constructed very differently from hair. If you look at a real bird, they don't look 'hairy', they look smooth (unless they're ruffling their feathers). It looks like you heavily referenced a photo for the overall picture. Not necessarily a bad thing, you did get the skin tone and general features pretty close to realistic, but the clothes look very flat, especially the coat because the lighting isn't consistent. You should get an idea of where the light is coming from (look up some shadin tutorials c:) 0 players like this post! Like? |

@Scyllarus, Thank you so much! Yes I know I have a problem with 'loose' sketching, it's very hard to not redo the lines constantly. I so like to use lots of color or no color at all, but in this case I have to say I am slightly colorblind which is why I press so hard on my pencils (to tell the difference). Somewhere around here I have a few 'stand still' charcoal pieces from High School art class and I think they might have freer lines than the ones now. Also, did you get the joke about Free Balloons? 0 players like this post! Like? Edited on 07/05/15 by Valentine (Accept. Fights) (#34494) |

@Valentine Once you mentioned it, yes, I think I did c: You may also want to try other art materials. Pastels seem like they'd go well with you c: 0 players like this post! Like? |

@Scyllarus, What exactly are pastels? Is it a pencil of some sort? I didn't have a great art teacher. 0 players like this post! Like? |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pastel http://www.amazon.com/gp/top-rated/arts-crafts/12896741 Pastels are kind of like crayons, but they don't use wax binders. They're softer and more blendable and can come in very vivid colors c: 0 players like this post! Like? |

@FadedNobody Ahah, I actually quite like your art! Someone better than me could probably give you better tips, but here're my suggestions anyway: Work on a bigger canvas OR start zooming in on details more. Your problem seems to literally just be that you're messy with your details. It may help to start using more...dense? solid? higher opacity? linework. I can also see here and there where the color has escaped the lines, which doesn't help. I'd suggest either locking the opacity on the color layer or using masking layers to keep things neat c: Here's an example of one of my stupidly complex pieces (character belongs to me): http://40.media.tumblr.com/aedb26f281865fd8d35da6318102b789/tumblr_n62e56wsl71rrrn59o1_1280.png Everything looks sleek and clean because I make sure my linework is neat and keep everything well inside the lines. 0 players like this post! @Blue Hawk Ahah, hello again! I'm actually finished up on lining the commission before yours c: My advice is to get looser with it. You've seen my sketch WIPs, they're very loose and quick and I don't work on trying to make them polished and perfect yet. Your lines are very fuzzy and I get a sense that you're trying to make things look perfect before they should. Also, layers. It's obvious from your first link that you're not using them. I'm not sure what kind of art program you're using, but there's several free ones online that you can use that will allow you to use layers. http://oscyllarus.tumblr.com/post/115008020695/drawingden-digital-painting-autodesk-sketchbook Layers allow you to keep parts of your picture separate. You've seen my snarling lion icons, right? The body lineart is on one layer, the color is on another, and shading effects are on yet another - and then repeat that for each mane. Lastly, inspiration. You can certainly always google "wolf" or "dog" and get plenty of images to draw inspiration from. You can also turn on your favorite movie and pause at a good place (Balto and The Lady and the Tramp come to mind for dogs). 0 players like this post! Like? |

@Scyllarus Oh nice! :3 Ahh thank you for the advice. I must admit certainly do attempt to rush and complete things too soon. It's a habit I need to break. And no, I didn't use layers for them.. I have only just recently figured out how to use them properly xD so next drawing I do myself I will attempt layers with it! And I use GIMP as my program. I never realized those icons had so many layers to them :o Oh I never thought of watching my favourite movies and pausing them! I love Fox and the Hound and Balto <3 I will try using them as inspiration! I thank you so much for the advice and I will use all of it when I do my next drawing when the muse hits me <3 0 players like this post! Like? |
