Okay, long time RPer, first time poster here...

I was browsing some boards and found a link to a vocabulary/anatomy list that is supposed to help RPers expand and change up their vocabulary and was saying that you SHOULD be using these INSTEAD of the basics. Interested, I peeked over to see what it was and was just... baffled.

Here are some examples I found that are the most absurd:
HEAD: Gray matter, cranial casing, vertex, culmination,
NECK/THROAT: Esophagus, curvature, Pharynx
BODY: Cadaver, corpse, lithe, willowy, facade, embodiment
FACE: Grimace, scowl, presentation
EARS: twin pinnacles, diagnostics, antennae
TEETH: bicuspids, enamels, incisors

The list went on to different emotions, even different verbs.

"But Jasper" you're wondering "Why is this bad? These are all words" Well, frankly, it's poor writing. Most of these words are referring to a very specific part of anatomy and wanting people to use it as a replacer for a general term, others are simply adjectives that don't belong in replace of the word, and others just flat out do not mean the same thing as what they're implying (e.g., a cadaver specifically means a dead body and should not be used in place of the word 'body').

Now, of course, you should be changing things up but to go off this list you're going to be doing it the wrong way and making your writing look a mess and throwing things out there that just flat out don't mean what you think they do. Also, its totally okay to use generic words! You don't always have to be replacing words to make you seem like a better writer. And, the amount of times you change your words, it again only comes off as poor writing. Lets compare:

Using words from the list : "Leaves crunched softly beneath her foundations as she toddled across the forest floor, exciting her twin pinnacles with their interuption to the midnight silence that had settled around her. Lowering her constitution, she came up over a small hill that led down into a slope of ground thick with trees and ferns for prey to masticate. Behind her, her appendage lashed. She narrowed her chasms in glee as she promenaded forward along a path again, eager for the reward of a full gastro."

Normal (considered "lit" level but with none of the words from the list): "Leaves crunched softly beneath her feet as she stalked across the forest floor, exciting her ears with their interuption to the midnight silence that had settled around her. Lowering her body, she came up over a small hill that led down into a slope of ground thick with trees and ferns for prey to feed on. Behind her, her tail lashed. She narrowed her eyes in glee as she stalked forward along a path again, eager for the reward of a full stomach."

See how it reads weird and just doesn't make sense? Using big, complex words doesn't make you a better writer, especially if they don't mean what they're even supposed to! Hopefully this helps any RPers struggling with this and their writing, but this is just a huge peeve of mine and it needed to be out there.

This.
I mean, if roleplaying like the first example makes you happy, go ahead -- but please don't tell other people that's the "right" way to do it! It's cluttered and difficult to read.

What the hell...

I would kick someone out of my RP in 1 second flat if I caught them using those words. I want the actual thing, I don't want 'antennae' for ears, antennae are what insects have and some crustaceans. But not mammals...

Those are filler words to make someone sound more intelligent, and or fill their ego like 'I can RP good! Look at all the big words I have in this post.' And half of us don't know what the hell they are saying.

The thing that amazed me the most was the terms it suggested that mean something very specific, like saying "solar plexus" instead of stomach but the solar plexus is a very specific part of the body and shouldn't be used instead of stomach. Even with the verbs list, it was offering things like "circumference" and "distortion" instead of just saying "turn" because apparently that was just too bland.

God, this throws me back to when I first began roleplaying. I used terms like this because the site I was on had groups that would literally kick you out for using everyday words in the roleplay. You could be typing 'u' instead of 'you' and they'd keep you because you'd say things like, 'A crimson fluid stained the terra firma beneath my pads, my cranium craning downwards for my oxygenators to sniff at.'
I have seen people RP with these terms relentlessly and having arguments burst because of this, and I just can't believe the utter stupidity of people. Using these words in place of, say, 'nose', 'paws', or 'face' is just plain annoying, not to even get to the point that it's incorrect usage of the words. I can understand saying 'foliage' instead of 'underbrush', merely because foliage literally is another way of saying underbrush. But saying 'skull' in place of 'head'? No. A skull is the bone that creates the support and structure for your head, but it doesn't make up the entirety of what a head is.
Forcing these terms down people's throats and then also saying it'll 'expand your vocabulary' is wrong. Yes, it'll expand their vocabulary once they do their research and get the correct meanings for the words, not the meanings that you and them are being lead to believe.
To say the least, I have strong feelings against this commonly found issue.

**And sorry, when I say 'you', I don't mean you per say, but rather the people who do this.

Oh my god thank you for this. I absolutely hate wolfspeak, I once rped with someone who used intense wolf speak and I just snapped on her. SHE CALLED HER CHARACTER'S LEGS CASTLES. Like, you idiot, WOLVES DO NOT HAVE CASTLE LEGS, she refused to accept that her so called anatomy was wrong so I just kinda stopped talking to her. e3e'

It was when they started using words like Femora and Brujo that I just kinda went.. whut.
I used to rp quite a lot? Usually quite literate ones too but I actually had to stop because of the growing use of Wolfspeak, it was awful (I used to RP on FH)

Oh, I still rp on FH. x3 The Wolfspeak has died down an awful lot, a lot of rps ban it.
