Look behind their eyes,
and all of their secrets tell themselves.

Character Sheets | Roleplay Thread

BREAKING NEWS:
Melanie Kyte, 8, has been pronounced dead following an attack caused by an albino saltwater crocodile familiar.

Accidents happen, and the city had been content to accept that the incident had been a mere mishap. But then the test results came back and showed that the child’s death had been no mistake, and the city erupted into chaos. There were protests, riots, and murders. The once-peaceful city had fallen, leaving behind a haunting shell with a thirst for blood. The Familiarized were driven out and slaughtered by those seeking to protect those without familiars, and the harder they fought to defend themselves, the worse the war got. It was utter hell, to put it lightly.

Now, a year later, an ever-growing group of Familiarized lurk in the woodland, waiting to reclaim their city. Some wish to show the Unfamiliarized that they mean no harm, while others seek revenge. Whatever the case may be, they all have one thing in common.
They want to go home.

We're not gonna let them control us.

Rules and Information
* This is a literate roleplay, and that means at least two moderate-length paragraphs and extremely minimal grammatical errors. I understand that some of you use mobile devices occasionally to roleplay, but that doesn't mean you can just ignore any grammar mistakes you make. At least go through and read your writing and make sure it is mostly error-free before posting it.
* Hate the character, not the player. I cannot stress this enough. Characters are there for you to use and abuse and hate with every fiber of your being, but be mindful of the people playing those characters. Just because a character is a complete douchebag doesn't give you the right to abuse the player behind them.
* Not everyone can have a big cat or a wolf familiar. Let the familiars vary, and keep in mind that most predatory familiars have been killed by the Unfamiliarized due to the dangers they pose. Throw in some bugs and rodents and arachnids. Your familiar can be any (non-extinct) animal on earth, so why go with the generic feline/canine? Get creative!
* Familiars do not have to represent the person they are bonded to. A genius can bond with a panda, and the kindest pacifist in the world can bond with a wolverine. Of course, the animals sometimes do represent their humans, but it is more common for them to be complete opposites.
* Limit one on one. Depending on how many people join this roleplay, you must wait at least three to five posts between each of your replies. This is a group roleplay, and not all conversations should only involve two people.
* Familiars cannot talk. Familiars are not some higher species, they are generic animals that have bonded with specific humans. They cannot communicate with others outside of their species, and it is unlikely that a deer familiar will understand what an anaconda familiar is trying to say unless they have known each other for a long time. However, a person and their familiar can sort of "feel" each other's emotions, and due to the amount of time they've spent together they can sort of understand the other's gestures and actions. Just remember that, no matter how close they are, no one is capable of fully understanding and communicating with their familiar.
* The only way to identify a Familiarized is through their eyes. A bonded human's eyes will always match their familiar's and vice-versa. In most cases, only the eye color is the same, but occasionally the pupil shape will match as well (e.g., a person with a sheep familiar might have horizontal sheep pupils). This will be very rare in the roleplay, however, as the Familiarized with unique pupil shapes would have been the first to be killed due to their obvious bond.
* Humans can live without their familiars and familiars can live without their humans. It is miserable and most end up taking their own lives, but it is possible. Should their familiar die, the Familiarized will retain their eye color (and shape), and so most end up refusing to look at their reflection to avoid seeing their familiar's eyes.

I'm taking back the crown.

Zaki | Male | 19 | Nagi
Location: Familiarized Camp
Mentions: Alistair (OPEN)

The air was a bit too cold for Zaki’s liking, and Nagi was definitely uncomfortable. The leucistic crocodile was much more grumpy than usual, hissing at anything that moved. He'd even hissed at Alistair at one point when the man had tried to coax him out of the sun for some reason or another. He was currently laying by the river in the sun, the water being far too cold for him to swim comfortably. Several blankets were thrown haphazardly over him to cover his entire length and keep him warm, with only his head and the tip of his tail visible from underneath. He was asleep with one blue eye open, and he would lift his head periodically to check in on Zaki and occasionally Alistair.

Nearby, Zaki talked quietly with Alistair about their plans for the Familiarized. They'd had this discussion several times before, but more as passing comments than true conviction. Now, however, Zaki spoke animatedly, tired of hiding in the forest and desperate to return to the city he'd lived in his entire life.

“We can't stay here, Ali. Our first winter in the forest was a nightmare and even Nagi got sick, and it was one of the warmest winters in the history of Pennsylvania! It's supposed to get much colder this year, and frankly, I'm not too sure we’ll even make it through the winter. Nagi most certainly won't. He's clearly unhappy now, and it's only August!” Zaki said in a raised voice, gesturing pointedly over to his familiar. The crocodile woke up and lifted his head to glance over at his Familiarized upon hearing his name, quickly going back to sleep when he realized he wasn't being summoned. Zaki pulled at his hair anxiously, putting all of his willpower towards not pacing back and forth.

“I want to go back to the city, Ali. I want to go home.” His hushed words held a determined tone, but there was an underlying frantic desperation that would've been impossible for anyone that knew him well enough to miss. He was terrified of what may happen if they returned to the city after the Unfamiliarized made it very clear that they were unwelcome, but he was more terrified of having to spend the rest of his life in a forest. He was sure some of the others were too. Zaki may not have lived a life of luxury prior to the Melanie Kyte incident, but it was undeniably better than what it was in the forest. Hell, even the foster care system felt like a dream come true compared to his life now.

Funny, Zaki used to dream of leaving the city and his past behind to travel the world. Now, he only dreamed of going back.

Anne | Female | 76 | Eden
Location: Familiarized Camp
Mentions: (OPEN)

The cold didn't bother Anne. She’d lived her entire life up north, so to her, Pennsylvania was nice and warm pretty much year-round. She was almost hoping for winter to come around, as there was nothing as beautiful as freshly-fallen snow in her opinion. Plus, snow meant snowmen, and she loved building snowmen. Every year her and Jonathan would go out after a snowstorm and make a gigantic snowman, making it a point to build each one bigger than the one from the previous year. Even after his death, she still built at least one snowman every winter, even if it was much smaller than the ones they used to form.

Anne sat against a tree, angled so that she could watch the activities taking place around her. Eden stood at her side, and if familiars could talk they would most certainly be bickering like an old married couple. As is, though, Anne was the one doing all of the talking, telling her familiar things the bird couldn't even understand although she reacted with head tilts and soft noises anyway.

“I mean seriously, who goes to a restaurant and orders a pizza with the crust cut off? Either eat the crust like a big kid or eat around it. Don't make the chef’s life more difficult than it already is,” Anne was ranting to the condor, although judging by the bird’s distinctly uninterested expression it probably wasn't the first time she'd told the story. Eden was patient, however, letting the woman recite her experience without interrupting. It's not like they had anything else to do. Half of the other Familiarized were still asleep, and the ones that were awake had better things to do than talk to the crazy old lady and her big scary bird. Anne didn't mind. If no one wanted to talk to her, she was perfectly content with talking to Eden, even if the bird had no clue what she was saying.

Alistair | Male | 20 | Sera
Location: Familiarized Camp
Mentions: Zaki (OPEN)

It was a cool, crisp morning, and slightly cloudy. It wasn’t raining as it had been for the past couple of days and even looked like it would get sunny later in the day, and for that reason, Alistair had been planning to head into the city to get a couple supplies, because, despite the rampant criminality and the whole run-down situation of the city, people still lived life there - and where there was life, there was a Walmart. Or a Target. Though the inside of either was, generally, pretty soul-sucking and lifeless and made him wonder whether vampires actually existed and worked there. But that was not the point. The point was that Alistair had wanted to head into town in the morning, maybe with some of the others that could pass as Unfamiliarized pretty easily, to get supplies.
Which he had not ended up doing. Zaki had waylaid him while he’d been making his way over to the others from where he’d been sitting by the bank of the river. And now they were discussing the same old issue that they had so often discussed before, especially recently: returning to the city.
“Look,” he said, running his hands through his air agitatedly, “I want to go back too. I do. And I definitely want to try to solve the whole issue peacefully. But if that doesn’t work, Zaki - if that doesn’t work, if it gets even more violent - if people want to take back the city with violence - then.. Just. Screw that, Zaki. Then screw the city and everyone here. What’s important is that you’re happy and you won’t be if the situation gets even worse!”
He noticed his voice getting louder and louder, so he lowered it again, continuing: “Zaki, I’m serious. If it doesn't work out - promise me. Promise me we’ll just forget all the shit here and just leave. Head somewhere in bumfuck nowhere and just stay there - please. We can make any place home if we have to. But the city can’t be home if it was won with violence.” he knew he sounded desperate now, and very different to what most people thought he was: helpful, selfless, always looking for an answer to a problem.
The truth of the matter was that Alistair was terribly, terribly selfish. He wanted to keep Zaki safe - both mentally and physically. And he knew just how awful Zaki felt about all the violence towards Familiarized now - how the guilt ate at him - how much worse would it get if the Familiarized retaliated in the same manner?
Even worse: would Zaki not be in even more danger if he stayed and things escalated? Not only was he physically weak, he was also publicly known as the instigator of the whole issue, as Melanie Kyte’s murderer. Even now, it was too dangerous for him to go into the city. So what would it be like if Melanie Kyte’s were not the only death caused by the Familiarized?
Logically, Alistair knew that leaving the city would eat away at Zaki even more than staying. He’d feel guilty about not being there to help when he was the one who’d caused it all. He’d take every death upon his shoulders like his own personal sin.
And besides that, Zaki wouldn’t leave. He wouldn’t abandon those whose fates he was directly responsible for.
Still, Alistair asked - maybe for his peace of mind. Or maybe just to have some sort of certainty in a life filled with uncertainties.

Tina | Female | 16 | Oak | Location: Just outside the camp | mentions: none

Tina strolled quietly through the forest, her amber hair pulled back in a small bun. She kept one hand in her hoodie pocket while the other trailed out to her side, feeling the plants and mossy rocks as she passed by them. A bag hung at her side, swaying with every move. She was following the same trail she did every morning, it led to a broken down shed where she and Oak would stay for most of the day when they could. The old Mandrill was growing less and less tolerant of the people around him as he aged. To Tina it was like watching a family member lose their mind with age, but she knew she couldn't do anything about it. Once the two arrived at their destination, Tina ducked inside the delapidated building with Oak at her heels.

The building itself was only about 6 by 6 feet, its half fallen tin roof cut that size in half. So the building barely fit the two under it.
"I never thought I would say this, but I miss the city." Tina said laying down her bag in a corner of the shed, she sat down in front of it and leaned back against the fallen roof. Oak motioned To the bag in his own form of sign language as He got comfortably seated next to her. "Yeah, yeah, you hungry old man." She mumbled reaching into the bag and retrieving an apple. It was small, and kind of mushy, but Oak wouldn't mind. He accepted the apple, inspecting it carefully for god-knows-what before taking anlarge bite of it. "I even miss mom..." she sighed leaning her head against the large primate. Oak reached his free hand around Tina's shoulder in a comforting manner. He understood she was unhappy and wanted to comfort her.

Atticus | Male | 22 | Jelly | Location: Inside Familiarized camp | mentions: Zaki ,Alistair, Anne (indirectly)

Atticus sat on a large, moss-covered rock just listening to Zaki and Alistair converse from afar. He wouldn't admit it, but he had tuned out Anne's rambling completely. He still hadn't gotten to know many of the other people in the camp personally, just there names. Despite the chilly atmosphere, he wore a white tank top with worn down sweatpants. Really he was just in his pajamas.

Atticus would get dressed for his day later, he had just woken up anyway- so he had an excuse. He laughed quietly as Jello danced on a tree limb close above him. The large birg Swung his head from side to side with an added dipping motion and took a step in each direction. The bird would slow occasionally and just bounce up and down, making the whole branch move. Atticus shook his head with a smile on his face, "Silly bird." He mumbled standing up. He kicked a rock out of his path before tucking his hands in his pockets and walking towards a little makeshift shelter of his. Jelly cawwed loudly before flying down from the tree branch to follow Atticus. He land gracefully on the ground and wobbled over to where he was. Atticus opened a large suitcase, immediatly pulling out a muted yellow "dad shirt" designed with pineapples lined up across the chest and some faded blue jeans.

"Bad clothes." Jelly chirped, tilting his head at Atticus.

"Its not like you could do better." Atticus laughed reaching his arm down so that Jelly could step up. "I've got to wash the rest of my clothes!" He exclaimed as he stood up. The parrot just bounced on his arm as Atticus walked away from the camp to get some privacy.

Jelly flew off his arm after having spotted a rodents carcass some feet away and Atticus took the moment to change. He kept the the white tank top on under his unbuttoned shirt. Jelly flew up onto Atticus' shoulder, "Pretty boy." He squawked

"Why thank you." Atticus said slipping on his boots, "Lets see what we can do around the camp." Atticus suggested.

"Pretty boy, pretty bird, pretty bird." Jelly squacked repeatedly in reply, of course Atticus didn't expect much from the bird. He reached up and pet Jelly's neck before setting off towards the camp once more. He knew that Zaki was the one who got them all into this mess but he had forgiven him, after all he knew that no one can control their familiar. Tina, however, did not see it the same way. Atticus tried to make her understand that it wasn't anyones fault really, but she still resented the kid. Atticus felt bad for him really, so much pressure on such a young guy had to really suck. He felt the most he could do was be friendly and help out around the camp.

Riley | Female | 16 | Twister
Location: Familiarized Camp
Mentions: Zaki and Alistair

Riley sat in a tree, kicking her legs as she watched the camp wake up. This had been her home for quite some time now, more time than she cared to count, but she certainly missed her parents. She loved them, even though she had a feeling they were taking part in the war going on between her kind and theirs. Her kind... She had never thought like that before all this drama happened. She looked down the tree trunk, following its line down to (barely) spot Twister, his green body coiled among the roots, blending perfectly with the slowly browning foliage. She smiled at him pityingly. She knew he hated the cold, and soon he would be clinging to her constantly in order to keep warm. She loved when he got snuggly like that, but felt bad when it was because he was so terribly cold...

Lifting her stormy gaze, she scanned the camp. It was early, people were just starting to stir, but Alistair and Zaki were having an active, and seemingly heated, conversation. She wondered what it was at first, but instantly felt silly. Of course, she knew what it was about. The city. She wanted so badly to be home, but was it even home anymore? She almost didn't want to go back, knowing it wouldn't be the same. She jumped from the tree, landing with a soft thud. A few feet away, just out of strike range, Twister lifted up into the classic 'S' strike pose, giving a deep hiss as his tail whipped up into a furious rattle, until he tasted Riley's scent on the air. He settled down, then slowly slithered over to her. She picked him up and draped the massive serpent across her delicate shoulders, before she walked toward Zaki and Alistair, stopping just shy of actual approach. Her nervousness kicked in, and she just stood there staring, hoping one of them would take notice and wave her over. The poor girl was basically a conversational vampire. She had to be invited in before she could join.

Solaris| Female | 18 | Prince Charming
Location: Familiarized Camp
Mentions: Alistair, Zaki, Riley

Solaris had been up early and taken Prince out to scout around camp, for predators and to find firewood so their camp could get some kind of warmth, it was cold, it would only get colder, she wanted to go home, go back to the city, damn the consequences of how they took the city back.
Heck in her opinion the unfamilirized deserved the same as they gave them, they deserved to be killed and beaten, but perhaps that was just the loss of her parents speaking, still it didn’t matter she wanted to go home no matter how.

As she approached the camp, she heard voices and grumbled before nudging Prince to make him trot into the camp, as she steered him towards Zaki and Alistair stopping the stallion close to them, passing but ignoring Riley, though Prince tensed up slightly, “your brother is right, the city is our home, the city will be home once more to us.

If you ask me…. we find out if there are any of the unfamilirized that do not agree with the rest and wish to support us and the rest? We give them what they have given us…. death and violence” she growled darkly, Prince making a nodding movement with his large head, seemingly in response to Sols word but really he had tried to get a small annoying insect to leave him alone

Cole| Female| 22| Bebet

The anger and frustration had Cole’s stomach doing somersaults. She felt like a creep spying like this but she just couldn’t help it. It seemed like it had been ages since the incident but in reality it happened just over a year ago. The embarrassment she had felt when she was effectively kicked out of her own stables was almost unbearable. Now she could only watch from a distance as the stables carried on without her. She was crouched behind a pile of tinder, peering over the top of it to shoot glares at a few of the riders.

‘There’s that witch Jennifer, prancing around as if she owns the damn place.’ Cole thought to herself as her lips pursed together in a pout. Cole watched Jennifer go through the jumping course, chuckling to herself when her mount balked at the Liverpool. ‘What an idiot. If she had paid any attention to what I had told her she’d know that Wewoka needs to be corrected so she doesn’t look down.’ Cole’s musings were cut short as her brain was scrambled at the sight of her pride and joy.

“Chili.”

She whispered the name out loud with a sort of breathlessness. The stallion was being lead out of the stables for his morning run and he was stunning, as usual. The rose grey colt tossed his head back as the trainer lead him to the track. Chili was always eager to get on the track, if he had it his way he’d spend all day running circles around that thing. Cole had never met a horse like Chili, he was bred to be a contender for the Triple Crown and there was no doubt in her mind that Chili would win. Although now, as she watched a stranger saddle Chili up and get astride she feared that she would never get to ride the colt again. Cole’s focus was broken by a nudge. She huffed and spun around, knocking a few logs off the pile.

“You silly oaf, get away from me.” Cole grouched. Bebet snorted at her and took a step back only to paw at the ground and move to nudge Cole again. With one last longing glance at the stables she stood and brushed off any dirt the clinged to her leggings and started off back in the direction of camp. Bebet followed close behind, occasionally nudging Cole when she wasn’t walking fast enough. Bebet was the only thing left of her old life. Her parents had moved back to Dallas before the kerfuffle started, leaving Nicolette and her older brother Mathieu behind in Pennsylvania to train. In the aftermath of the incident she had lost Mathieu, assuming he had taken off for Dallas. With a giraffe as a familiar it would have been hard for him to lay low, she hoped he had made it though hadn’t heard anything from her parents. Not that she got in touch with them often, there was no electricity out here and she rarely found an opportunity to sneak into the city to charge her phone.

As the pair trudged into the campgrounds Cole took a look around at the pitiful group of misfits that were gathered here. Bebet didn’t let her assess the sight for long, with a loud snort and a more forceful nudge the mare let Cole know she didn’t care for people watching. Cole stumbled a bit, almost faceplanting into the cold soil.

“Babs, stop it! You know just because you’re bigger doesn’t mean we always have to do what you want to do.” She placed her palms on Babet’s chest and gave a shove, attempting to push her back. The mare didn’t budge, instead Cole’s feet slid across the ground. With a huff she flipped Bebet the bird and crossed her arms . She wished the Throuroughbred understood the gesture but Bebet just sniffed at the ground a bit before walking off towards the river. As the mare lowered her head to take a drink she spied Nagi resting just a few feet away, the sight of the reptile set Bebet off and she reared up. With a loud whinny she bucked and took off in the opposite direction, jumping over a narrow section of the river that ran along the other side of camp and galloping off into the woods. Cole had tried to grab the mare only to be knocked to the ground, as she stared up into the cloud covered sky she fought down the string of profanity that rose in her throat like bile.

Vaughn | | Male | | 11 | | Fig
Location: Familiarized Camp
Mentions: Alistair, Zaki, and Anne (Indirect)

---

Waking up early in the morning was certainly not Vaughn's favorite thing in the morning. In a way, it reminded him of how he had to get up at the crack of dawn to get ready for school, slowly but surely, and finish any of yesterday's homework. It was almost strange that it reminded him of school; for he hadn't been there in a full year. But, like most children would be wondering- if he ever did go back, would he have to start with the grade he left off in? That thought hurt his brain, so he tried to suppress it with more comforting thoughts, like how his entire life was now one big camping trip, he could wake up whenever he wanted to (mostly), and how he had so much time with Fig... well, when she wasn't resting in the afternoon, that is.

A quiet rustling woke up Vaughn, whose messy hair had been tangled further by his incessant tossing turning in the middle of the night that he was sure annoyed Anne... and was probably the reason that she left their shared tent either in the morning. After all, very few people would appreciate being accidentally kicked or rolled on by a sleeping boy wrestling with the vibe dreams in his mind. But, when he heard the rustling, he knew it had to be none other than Fig. Lifting a tired eyelid, Vaughn crawled listlessly to the source of quiet noise, and sat up once he reached his backpack.

The rustling ceased, and he dug his hand around in his backpack until his finger brushed up against Fig's velvety, soft fur. Gently, his fingers wrapped around her small body, and he set her on the palm of his other hand. Fig's snowy white fur was temporarily dyed by the red berries he'd allowed her to get into last night if she pleased. Moving Fig up onto his his forearm, Vaughn rummaged through his back to pull out the open bag of red berries, and he inspected them quickly before sighing. The bad had been full of juicy, sweet berries that he knew that both he and Fig would like... but, over the course of the night, Fig fancied nibbling a tiny bite from each of them, rather than just eating a full berry. "Aw, Fig! I wanted some of those! Now they'll rot really soon," he sighed, and pulled out a berry to offer to her. "Since you did this- you take it!" He held the berry out to Fig for her to take into her little paws, but she simply refused it, not even wanting to give the slightest glance to the "tainted" berry. Sighing once more, he half-heartedly tossed the flawed fruit back into the bag. Maybe he'd find some use for it later...?

While tumbling with his thoughts, Vaughn perked up at the sound of Zaki and Alistair talking outside. Alistair's voice seemed to get louder and louder, fervent in his belief about violence in the city worsening the situation. And to that, he just covered it his ears, trying to drown it out. He'd heard similar things before, about going home and back to the city. But what did he believe in? Would his mom remember him? Was she still there? Did she even love him if she left him out there? As a child, it was hard to comprehend difficult questions like that. After all, he thought his mother had loved him... until that night.

~

His mother had left Vaughn and Fig on the edges of the gnarly forest nearly an hour before, but he'd taken little more than a few steps into the pitch blackness of the forest, with its thick canopy concealing any rays of moonlight that may split though to give him some sort of light and judgement. Fig was in his shirt pocket, restless. She didn't make a peep and Vaughn was terrified that she would slip out of the pocket at any time and race off into the darkness, never to be found again.

As a precaution, he removed her from his pocket and held her tiny body in his hands, while her weak, prehensile tail gently wrapped around his wrist. If anything, that gave him a sense of comfort, even if Fig didn't understand his emotions and she was merely doing it out of necessity. The only thing he could do now, was talk quietly to Fig, but definitely not too loudly, for he feared someone may hear him. "Fig... I'm scared. I can't see anything. I know you can... but you can't tell me where to go. Or who's around... or whether or not we can go back home." Vaughn's voice was weak and quavering while his hands gently squeezed Fig, which earned him an utterance of a growl from Fig.

"Why did mom leave us, Fig? She said it was dangerous... but... This forest is really scary. And... I want to go home!" And with that, Vaughn slumped against a nearby tree, hitting his a little too hard against it, and he cried, biting into his lip to try and quiet himself a little and to prevent open-mouthed wailing, while Fig wriggled about in discomfort in his now loosening hands. And defeated... Vaughn slid down the side of the the tree until he was sitting on the roots that bursted out of the ground and provided a bumpy place to sit. It wasn't comfortable... but, the biggest of his worries was spiders and insects crawling around on his sleeping body. That thought did not settle well with him, so that night, he stayed up all night, whimpering and holding onto Fig for comfort, even though she could not give him any, except for the blankness of her glassy eyes, which Vaughn thought held an inkling of emotion in them... or perhaps, it was just his imagination.

~

Figuring that he may as well start his day, Vaughn crawled out of the tent, his body popping gently as he stretched his way out, until he unceremoniously tumbled out of the tent. Fig had hopped off his arm by the then and he hurriedly inspected the area to make sure he hadn't squashed her, but was relieved to find her perched on the apex of the tent. "Gosh, Fig. I thought I smashed you!" he said, inviting her to crawl back up his arm, which she did... ever so slowly until she crawled up into the mass of hair on his head, which, embarrassingly enough, was like a nest to her.

Donté | Male | 27 | Mouse
Location: Outside Camp
Mentions: Tina, Cole and Bebet

Donté leaned against the wall of his makeshift shelter, something he had cobbled together out of stolen pallets, tin roofing and a blue tarp. It was sturdy, but not very big, hardly tall enough for him to sit up straight while inside, and impossible to stand in. It was meant only for him to sleep in, as he preferred to be able to move about while awake. He was usually asleep at this time, being nocturnal in nature, but he was finding that his shelter wasn't as weatherproof as he had hoped. The rain hadn't gotten in through the roof, nor had it flooded as he had lifted the shelter up a few inches off the ground, but it did manage to sneak in along the sides where the tarp was pulled down. He needed to find a way to keep that sealed... that usually meant scavenging bits from the city. He loathed the idea, as it was near impossible for him to get into the city with his freakish eyes. The sclera, which would be white for most normal people, was a brownish color, fading into an almost-white along the outer edges. Luckily, his old trailer was still intact and untouched, at least on the outside. That first wave of riots and attacks had seen his old home ransacked, all of his 'belongings' rummaged through for anything worth stealing. He grinned wolfishly at the thought of them digging through his crap and finding just that. Crap. He had taken every tiny thing that was actually worth something to him, so that all they found were old clothes, cracked guitars he hadn't bothered to toss out, and engine parts for his motorcycle, which he had stashed in the forest and covered in a camo tarp to hide it.
He looked down at his stained white tank top, specifically at the little creature clinging to it. It was too early for Mouse to be active, but instead of sleeping in the shelter or in a tree, she wanted to sleep on his chest, used to the bumping and shaking of his everyday habits. How she stayed asleep, he would never know. He gave her back a very gentle scritch before grabbing his bag and heading toward his old house, passing close to the camp and veering away, past Tina's shack and into the trees. Just as he was getting a good stride going, a sound hit his ears. Hooves. One of the horses must have spotted Nagi. Again. He turned in time to see the hefty creature barreling towards him. He tossed his bag to the side, nudged Mouse until she woke up, panicked and flew off, and lifted his hands up to catch the mare's attention.

"Hey! Bebet!" He knew this one's name mostly because her Familiarized was usually shouting it. He could see why. "Easy..." He cooed, drawing the word out slowly, his voice kept absolutely calm despite the situation he was in. He seemed relaxed, but he was in fact primed to jump out of the way if the big beast didn't stop.

Zaki | Male | 19 | Nagi
Location: Familiarized Camp
Mentions: Alistair, Solaria

Zaki wouldn't look Alistair in the eyes. He knew he was being unreasonable - there was no way they could return to the Unfamiliarized's open arms and settle back down in the city as if nothing had happened. It just wasn't possible. But oh, how he wished he could just go home and forget this ever happened. Forget he had to watch his familiar murder an innocent child just because he was too shy to not get nervous around other people.

"You know I can't promise you that, Ali. These people-" he gestured around at the Familiarized surrounding them; "They're here because of me. Because of what Nagi and I did. How awful would that make me, to run off and abandon everybody to escape the problem I caused?" His voice was barely a whisper, but it held complete certainty in the fact that he had to stay, whether in the forest or back home in the city. He hated arguing with Alistair, but couldn't he see how wrong it would be to leave all of the other Familiarized behind?

Zaki opened his mouth to let out what was almost certainly an apology for nothing in particular, but before he could speak, Solaria cut him off. His eyes widened comically at her suggestion, and he immediately shook his head at the very notion of using violence as a way of reclaiming the city.

"The last thing we want is to turn this into a full-on war. We'd never be able to win, even with our familiars. We're way too outnumbered," he pointed out, forcing himself to not stammer because of his anxiety. He quickly added: "Besides, violence isn't the answer. We'd never be allowed anywhere near the city again." While he disagreed with Solaria's aggressive approach, he knew the chances of them being able to convince the Unfamiliarized to let them return to the city peacefully were slim, if nonexistent. But that didn't mean they had to go on a rampage, killing anything that moved.

Anne | Female | 76 | Eden
Location: Familiarized Camp
Mentions: Vaughn

Anne spotted her favorite eleven-year-old exiting their shared tent out of the corner of her eye and immediately rose to her feet, wincing as half of the bones in her body popped with the movement. She brushed it off, however, heading over towards Vaughn with Eden close in tow.

"Sleep well?" she inquired when she got close enough, unable to help the smirk that appeared upon spotting his familiar perched on his head. "I like your new hat, by the way. It suits you," Anne teased playfully.

Jack | Male | 17 | N/A
Location: City -> Familiarized Camp
Mentions: OPEN

Jack had woken up around six in the morning (he didn't know the exact time because he didn't have a clock in the forest) so that he could make a quick run to the city to grab some more water bottles for himself and some other Familiarized, seeing as he only had one left and there was no way in hell he was going anywhere near that river. He never had to worry about getting caught, as he was Unfamiliarized and looked it, too. Besides, he was fantastic at blending in. It certainly came in handy as a thief.

He'd squeezed through a gap in the fence that separated the forest from the city, wincing as a sharp piece of wire dug into his leg and drew blood. Once he was inside the city limits, he'd done a little sightseeing, A.K.A. he'd looked for someone to pickpocket, finally settling on a young man probably on his way to work. Jack nabbed his wallet, counting up how much he'd made and finding himself surprised at the two hundred dollar bills inside. That would certainly cover enough water for a while. He then headed into the nearest grocery store, grabbing four packages of water bottles, each with two dozen bottles inside.

As soon as he payed for the water he headed back to the forest, passing the packages through the rundown fence one at a time before following them himself. He knew they needed more supplies other than water, but there was no way he'd be able to carry everything they needed back to the camp, so he just decided to get what he needed and skedaddle (and make quite a bit of money in the process).

Jack ignored the commotion when he returned to the Familiarized camp, heading over to "his" tree and setting the waters down at the base. He grabbed a bottle before climbing up to nestle himself in the only fork in the tree sturdy enough to support a person's weight, finally turning his attention to the activities going on below.

Riley | Female | 16 | Twister
Location: Familiarized Camp
Mentions: Jack (Zaki, Alistair and Solaria in passing)

Riley spotted the much more outgoing Solaria and backed away, her whole face going red. The conversation had turned much more serious than she could handle, and the presence of the aggressive woman set her on edge, heart hammering in her chest, which now felt like a black hole had opened up in it. She scuttled away, hugging Twister close to herself to stave off a panic attack. She stepped away from the three, head down and hair covering her blushing face, and wandered in the direction of her tree. She still didn't talk with very many people in the camp, unless she was offering help with an injury or garden. Her parents had given her mixed feelings about the Familiarized. They had hated them, for a long time before she came along, but when their perfect baby girl came packaged with a very sassy, very tiny little snake... she cuddled Twister closer. He could feel her anxiety and stress, and he began to shake his tail, puffing up defensively as if expecting an enemy to approach. She smiled. Anyone else would be put off by the sound, instinctively wanting to distance themselves, but it was her favorite sound. It meant she wasn't alone, and that she was safe. Twister had always been like that, coiling atop her as a baby and not letting anyone but her parents near, and even then it was only with coaxing.

In her daydreams, she nearly ran into Jack. She leaped backwards like a terrified rabbit, just before Twister could take a strike at him.
"Ohmygods, I am.... soooo sorry... I-I-I thought this was... my... tree..." She lowered her eyes, covering them with her hair again, both of her dainty hands stroking the now angry serpent to try and calm him.

Atticus | Male | 22 | Jelly | Location: Inside Familiarized camp | mentions: Zaki ,Alistair, Solaris

The first thing Atticus heard upon arriving back in the camp was Solaris' suggestion that we should take the city back with violence. He furrowed his brow at the idea, nodding in agreement with Zaki as he approached them. "I agree, we don't need to stoop down to their level. If we tried to attack the city it would only end up making us look worse- if any of us even survived." He was unusually pessimistic on the topic. Jelly repositioned himself on Atticus' shoulder before stretching his wings out beside him. Atticus waved his hand at the bird on his shoulder trying to shoo Him away and Jelly complied, flying up into the trees and taking perch on a branch above them. "I think we should let them settle down for a while longer. " He ran a hand through his hair, we HAVE waited a while already though... he thought.
"Anyway, I'm uh, going to head out. I found a nice spot for fishing so I might head down there. Coho salmon are comming into season soon, might get lucky and catch some." It was off topic but he felt the need to let them know where he was going, "if any of you want to join me then feel free." He added while he was at it. Jelly chattered nonsense in the trees above them.

Tina | Female | 16 | Oak | Location: Just outside the camp | mentions: none

Tina had fallen asleep leaned up against Oak. The primates fur helping to insulate her body heat as well as his own. A loud thudding roused her from sleep and she maneuvered past Oak to see what was going on. Of course Oak was right on her heels as she exited the building. A horse galloped past her, the fast moving equine must of been spooked. Tina huffed, there goes someones familiar.

She pondered for a second wether or not to see what had happened that spooked the animal, eventually shrugging it off and deciding to go back to the camp. Grabbing her bag through the shattered window of the shed, she began making her way back to the camp. "Come on Oak, there is more food back at camp." She said picking up pace. She didn't know really anyone in the camp, let alone their familiars. So what they did was none of her buisness. She knew of a select few people, Zaki- the one that cause all this, Alistair- the devils brother, Atticus- her brother, and Riley- the only other sixteen year old in the camp. She didn't personally know any of them- except her brother of course- she's just not a peoples person.

Krynn | Female | 21 | Adon
Location: In the forest--->Familiarized Camp
Mentions: Bebet

Krynn was resting on the forest floor with a makeshift bed that wasn't too comfy. The bed was made out of large twigs that held the woven forest leaves together forming a criss cross pattern. Adon's soft black feathers absorbed the remaining heat in the air giving Krynn a warm blanket. His wings covered her upper half but the rest of her legs were cold and dirty. Small flies flew around the two preferably around Krynn's ears. Still halfway asleep she would swat at the small aggravating flies and put her hand back under her head, propping it up a bit. The flies would fly away but then come back with more of them, doubling in numbers every time. Krynn would mumble and groan at the flies circling her ears and had enough of them. Startling awake she sat up causing Adon to jump and stand up in protection mode. "I'm fine Adon. It's just the flies that are aggravating me," She spoke softly to Adon.

The silence was broken by the sound of thunder rumbling the forest floor causing Adon to scoot closer to Krynn. Krynn on the other hand was curious what was making that noise and looked around the shady forest seeing movement coming from the left of her. The silhouette of a horse appeared and the hire was charging straight for her. Without hesitation Krynn moved out of the way while Adon moved in the way of the horse's path. Krynn could see that the dark bay horse wasn't slowing down at all so Krynn lounged for Adon's light pink neck and pulled him towards her. Startled Adon fell backward and the unstoppable horse ran past them leaving them in a cloud of dust. "Whew, close one, right Adon?" He looked at her and stood back up annoyed that he was pulled back towards the ground.

Krynn chuckled and looked down at her makeshift bed and was partly disappointed that it wasn't in good condition. The leaves were ripped apart and the twigs were snapped and broken. She bent down to pick it up but the whole bed fell apart in her hands leaving Krynn with no bed for the night. Sighing in disappointment she looked towards the direction the horse was going and could see the dust cloud trailing behind the horse. Knowing Krynn couldn't stay mad for long she picked up a small bag packed with necessities and threw it onto her back and started to head towards camp where everyone else was.

While walking towards the camp she saw a small river with small bubbles coming from it. Fish could be in there. Nothing is better than fish. Krynn thought to herself and smiled. She looked around and thought about her father. She hated to think of the past but remembered how he taught her to make a makeshift fishing pole. She found a limb of a fallen tree that looked sturdy enough for some pressure to be applied to it. She pulled some string from her back pack and a small knife from her pack. Taking the tip of the knife she cut a small whole for the string to go through. Finding a small but sturdy twig she carved a small wooden hook and tied that to the end of the string. She tied the string in the whole and made a second fishing pole just in case this one broke. Finding bait for the fish would be either grubs or worms. Finding those would be hard but luckily she had Adon. Adon's diet consisted of grubs and leaves so finding grubs for him was easy. While he was looking for grubs Krynn headed towards the river looking for a good spot to fish.

Alistair | Male | 20 | Sera
Location: Familiarized Camp
Mentions: Zaki, Solaria

A frown crossed Alistair’s face at Zaki’s response. He’d known, of course, that Zaki would not just up and abandon the rest of the Familiarized; Guilt wracked him every day for the situation the Familiarized that had survived lived in and every death he heard of just added to the burden upon his shoulders, weighing him down more and more every day. “I know - I know, Zaki. I just wish there was an easy solution, some way to keep you safe,” he sighed. “I’m sorry - forgive me.” He saw Zaki get even more agitated and he really didn’t want to argue with him now, and he knew logically that Zaki was right.

Alistair’s mouth shut with a snap when Solaria intruded on their conversation, especially at the way she had done it. He was supremely glad when Zaki actually spoke to her for once, as Alistair had been this close to snapping at her. Yes, their situation was goddamn awful, and yes, something needed to be done, but violence, and aimed violence at that was not the answer.
“I mean,” he said dryly, in response to Zaki, “We’re not even allowed into the city right now. But,” and here he turned to Solaria, “Zaki is right. Violence is absolutely not the answer. It doesn’t matter that they were violent towards us, two wrongs don’t make a right, and besides, imagine what would happen if we started lashing out the same way they do now. Those that aren’t hostile towards us will definitely be once we do. They fear us, Solaria. But until now, they don’t have much reason to, aside from Melanie Kyte. That pretty much no familiarized defended themselves or retaliated is one of the main arguments of those that would see us re-integrated back into society or, really, those that view us positively. Now, imagine if that argument was null and void, because we did exactly that.” He ran his hands through his hair awkwardly, suddenly realising that he had basically just ranted at her.
“I understand you want justice. I do. But.. for once, we’ve got to be the better men. Because not doing so will get us all killed.” he said, calmer now.

Danny | Male | 21 | Esther
Location: Fairground --> Forest
Mentions: Esther & Camp

He slipped out of his trailer as the sun was just rising. Danny had reassured Erik that he was just going to check on Esther, though that was far from the truth. He was tired of watching the circus fall apart as people boycotted it because he was a familiar. It wasn't like he asked for it, it had been given to him and many of his family. Though they either left the circus life as soon as they could or like his aunt had lost their familiar due to age. He hefted his bags to the animal tent. Inside many of the animals roamed free, the predators having gone with their trainer when he fled the circus and stole all the money. Now just a few horses, elephants, and zebras were left. A large percheron gelding walked up to him and nudged his chest. Petting his Aunt Talia’s new horse he looked for Esther. His aunt’s familiar had passed last year, the mare seemed to have only lasted long enough for Talia to train a new vaulting horse. Danny rubbed Esther’s trunk, glad elephants lived as long as people.

Packing the two bigger bags on top of his familiar, he put the last bag on his back. Without telling anyone he headed towards the forest, away from all he had known. Slowly the noises of the city faded away and were replaced with the quiet songs of birds. The duo made their trek towards the familiar camp. Danny had heard stories of it from the few familiars that had passed through the circus. Slowly it seemed like the birdsong had gone away, replaced by the quiet bubbling of the river. Wanting to get a better look across the water without crossing it, he quickly scaled a nearby oak. The tree was no challenge to the seasoned acrobat and shot he peaked out amongst the leaves to spot a clearing. Slipping back down to the ground, he looked for a shallow spot to cross. Danny was guessing that the clearing held the camp he was looking for. Finding nothing suitable, he climbed on top of Esther so she could cross.

Nola | Female | 18 | Rei
Location: Familiar camp
Mentions: Alistair, Zaki, Solaria

Peaking out of her tent, she spotted the others up and moving. Disappearing for a moment back inside the tent, she fixed her bandages and replaced the torn ones. Most of her burns by now were healed up into scars, though a few nasty ones lingered. The slim blonde stepped out into the sunshine, her crow hopping out behind her. Rei fluttered his wings and flew up onto a branch that gave him a view of Nola’s activities. He was at the tail end of his life and no longer had the energy to follow her around. The bird would have been perched on Nola’s shoulder, but there was a fear that the scabs and scars could break open again. Nola slipped over to the small group discussing the city again.

“Perhaps we should just try and improve our camp? Or we could even move to a familiar friendly city?” She piped up, offering a suggestion that would counter Solaria’s. Nola had just caught the end of her statement and knew it would do no good. Tugging her sweater closer, she hoped they might have somewhere warm to stay before winter kicked in. Her thin frame and hatred for fire could prove fatal for her when the snow hit. On top of that she worried about her aging friend who was already elderly for his species and would not survive the harsh cold for sure. Nola knew she would lose her familiar shortly, yet she was trying her hardest to extend what time they had left together. With a click of her tongue, Rei flew down to her extended forearm. Drawing him close to her chest, she stroked his feathered head.

Solaria/Female/20/Prince Charming
Location: Familirized camp
Mentions: Alistair, Nola

Solaria took a deep breath to calm herself down, listening to the others speak, she knew they were right, deep down, she was just so angry and resentful towards the unfamilirized who had taken her family from her, even now two years later.

“You are right, I know that, but they took my family from me, I have nothing left but Prince” she pointed out before she slid of the shire stallion to land gracefully on her feet.
“Still, I should not let my view of them bring everyone else in danger, but we cannot stay in the forest for much longer, the winter may well be colder this year, and the reptile familiar are not fit to handle such cold, we have to find a place they can be safe” she said looking at Alistair before turning to Nola.

“That is not a bad idea, but are we even able to improve our camp enough that the reptile familiars while be able to stave of the cold? Do we even know there is a familiarized friendly city?”
