RP Tips & Tricks

First, let's start with the base. Your character.

Regardless of what the RP is, the character should have spark. When you create a character, you need to understand the character and begin to think like the character. Let's look at the character sheet again and I'll help you create a character on your own and then you can better play it.

We'll use Jadzia since she is a cub.

Not good with descriptions so I'll just give this: [link]

(Okay, here is one place I struggle with descriptions which is why I used a lion already in my den. You can also create a lion using the wardrobe option. This gives people an understanding of what your character looks like. It also tells you that if you have a bobbed tail, you can't twitch your tail because it doesn't exist. But you might instead say something like Jadzia twitches her bobbed tail. In this case, we're making reference to it and it adds more to the post because the person reading it can imagine it. That is what is important, the imagination. Your readers should be able to visualize your actions based upon your appearance.)

Name: Jadzia
(Pretty self explanatory, names are what you will be known by.)

Age: 3 Months

(This is a crucial part, too young and you severely limit yourself. Too old and everyone expects you to be wise. As a cub, you are helpless to the natural world but you have the joy of a wild and active imagination. Consider how Jadzia acts. She is energetic and gets into a lot of trouble, this is because she is excited to explore the world. She is at the age where she is young but learning about the world. Take this into consideration while posting and always consider age when making a character.)

Gender and pronouns (all are welcome): Female (this isn't important in an rp, this is just to make the general population happy. )

Sexuality (all are welcome): Unknown (another that's not really important, but in times of being in heat, it helps people know what they can expect.)

Family: Missing

(Family is a super important part. It can give you a HUGE advantage in the RP and open yourself up to more depth. In the case of Jadzia, it opened her up to being adopted by another lioness. Then, the question came up what happened to her family and that led to the RP with her being where it is now. It also means that Jadzia would be looking for a mother. See how it can help? So, in designing your character, think about family. What happened to your characters family? Why is this 5 week old cub suddenly alone? It's always good to ask these questions, and more.)

Personality (be descriptive): Jadzia is a very Energetic, playful, and curious cub. There is nothing she won't explore and it has gotten her into trouble on more than one occasion.

(Personality is the HARDEST part of creating a character. It can make and break a character. It can also help you understand the character a lot better. Start small. With Jadzia, I started with Energetic, playful, curious. Then, I asked myself how will these interact with each other. This led to the next part, stating that she gets into trouble because of her personality. This tells me that when she sees a bug crawling away, her playful and curious nature will cause her to follow after it. From there, I think about what might happen because she has ventured away from safety. I'll cover more about questions later.)


Rank: Wanderer (I might not be around every day so this works out best.)

(Rank is simply an idea of where your character fits into the pride. If you are a wanderer, like Jadzia, it might be difficult to settle down in a pride. If you're a king, you will have a presence that says "I'm in charge!")

Backstory:

Born to Nistral and Tongri, Jadzia was the last of a liter of 3. It was touch and go for her life, but she finally pulled through and started breathing.

As soon as she could walk she began wandering away from Tongri. Constantly having to be brought back by her father, Nistral, she was determined to get away and explore this massive world. Finally, one night when she was almost 3 months old, she managed to get away from her mom and dad and scampered off into the wild world.

It didn't take her long, however, before she realized she was lost. She has survived on grub and small mice, but she grows weak and in need of help.

(The backstory is where you build on all of the previous things you filled out. Consider Jadzia, I covered her family, her personality, and exactly why she was where she was. Her curiosity caused her to run away. She wanted to explore the world and wasn't content staying in the den. Because of this, her mother and father kept bringing her back. One day, she snuck away for good. Her mother and father again went after her (though I didn't cover this until rp) and the mother died and father got angry and exiled her... See how it can build? Once you understand your character, you can start to build on the rp style. So, now that we have covered the basics of character building, let's move on to RP style.

now let's cover RP styles.

First, let me be perfectly clear, there is NO wrong style. Everyone has their own style and everyone has their own way of Roleplaying. However, you can tell by the style the length of time a person has been Roleplaying. Example: In my style, there is enough description that you can imagine the scene I am setting. There is enough interaction that it keeps it moving and adds to the description, and it almost always covers the questions. Yep, there's that word again. Questions. I promise, I'll get to this.

Now, consider your current RP style. If it is simple and basic, and shows that you might lack the confidence I have built up over 20 years of Roleplaying. It shows that you want to get involved, but you aren't sure exactly how. Having a strong character build will help, but it is only the tip of the iceberg.

Another thing to note about styles is the "Power Player". These guys (myself included) post huge RP posts for a single character. This describes a large setting, and practically paints a picture. Here's an example from the Sister RP.

Nistral didn't move away from the lioness. Her inviting words were certainly tempting. But the role in which she asked, that was a queens role. He looked back towards Zembera, who was still sleeping at the mouth of the den.

"If you are seeking the role of queen, you will need to fight her." he said. "If you seek other roles, there are certain tests you must pass. See, we are not the "peaceful, you can take my place because I'm dying" kind of pride. You want the job, you fight for it. You want the food before another, you fight for it. Someone with so many scars might make a good protector, but one would have to ask..." he stands up and starts circling the new lioness. "how did one get the scars? Was she careless to let herself be caught off guard and struck?"

His words seemed to ring throughout the canyon. A certain pull to him began to show as a pair of eyes peered out from the cave.((those inside the cave will see the eyes looking in from the outside)) The words almost seemed to burn through the soul.

"I mean, look at me, I've been in many fights and have very few scars to show for it because I do not allow myself to be caught off guard." he said continuing to circle. "The bird however is a nice touch, rely on the one with wings to see things you cannot... or choose not to." his voice now taking a very dark tone.

He was behind the lioness at this point as he swatted at the bird, checking to see how "alert" she was. The eyes still watching from the cave.

This is an example of a power post. Don't try to do them right off the start until you build your confidence, but with some help building a character and understanding, you'll get there.

Keys to building a good style are to answer questions. (Yep, this is the part)
Understand the questions, answer them, and they will help. So let's look at the questions:
Who?
Where?
What?
When?
Why?
How?

Any good english and writing teacher will tell you these are the most important questions in writing. In this example, we are going to have Jadzia move across the den. So let's set the post in place and then we'll look at the questions.

So, let's look at how they apply to an RP post.

Who does the RP involve?
In the case of Jadzia, the RP involves her, obviously, and Aeryzi who is playing her adoptive mother. Looking at the characters for each of these tells me who I am dealing with. It gives me a base upon which to build. So let's start. Jadzia is currently walking across the den. While that is good because it explains an action and will get a reaction, but probably not get me a lot of attention because it is so small. So let's build. We know Jadzia's personality is energetic, so she probably wouldn't just 'walk' across the den. Let's change what she does.

Jadzia|Female|3 Months|Unknown|Mentions: Aeryzi

Jadzia energetically moves across the den.

Now, we have added her personality and it seems as though 'moves' doesn't quite fit. So let's have her doing something energetic besides moving.

Now you can see how it is starting, just by understanding Jadzia. Now let's add the other person in. Aeryzi's personality is as follows:

Personality: Aeryzi is reserved and well mannered. She can be humorous and laid back but sarcastic and rude when threatened. She is an excellent huntress and loves water. She adores cubs but doesn't believe she will ever have her own due to her past. She is skeptical of males and prefers to avoid them. She is a loner but loves company when its present. Despite having a bit of an attitude, she prefers compromising before fighting. She enjoys the stars, believing they are magical.

This tells us that she has manners and also a good sense of humor. So, since we know that, let's modify our post again.

Jadzia|Female|3 Months|Unknown|Mentions: Aeryzi

Jadzia energetically bounces across the den towards Aeryzi, her back end getting ahead of her front and causing her to tumble forward as she looked up at the lioness.

Now, we did that because it includes something from Aeryzi's personality. She has a sense of humor, so we can probably expect her to laugh. You can picture the cub actually doing this and, admit it, it's kinda funny.

So, now we have answered the who, let's move on to what.

What is the character doing?

In this case, we have kind of already answered this question. She is moving across the den. but what else, she has fallen. We have an action and science teaches us for every action there is a reaction. So, let's have Jadzia react to her fall.

Jadzia energetically bounces across the den towards Aeryzi, her back end getting ahead of her front and causing her to tumble forward as she looked up at the lioness. Having fallen, she shakes her head a moment before standing up and continuing towards Aeryzi.

Now, we have added a reaction to Jadzia. Now she is doing more than just simply walking across the floor. She has personality, she has humor, and you can actually imagine a lion cub doing this. Let's continue. Next is Where?

Where is the scene taking place?

Well, we know we are in the Den because we have already established that. Who (yup, back to that) is in the Den? Well, we know it's Jadzia and Aeryzi, so we can leave it at that. What is in the den? Well, there might be a nest, maybe a few rocks. So let's add some stuff to the den.

Jadzia energetically bounces across the den, across the nest and past some rocks towards Aeryzi, her back end getting ahead of her front and causing her to tumble forward as she looked up at the lioness.

Now we're getting somewhere. We don't really need to ask the other questions about the den, but we can if we want. Feel free to experiment while you learn to develop your style. Remember, there is no wrong style. Moving on, When?

When does the post take place? Is it day, night? Is Aeryzi sleeping? Let's add this in, but let's not keep the same paragraph. Let's spread it out to make it look better. Watch what happens:

This now tells us that it is night and Aeryzi is asleep. Now, this would probably have been set up by Aeryzi, but for the tutorial it gives us something to work on. Again, ask the questions.. can you answer any about this new part? Maybe or maybe not. For now we will just continue. Why? Why was Jadzia bouncing across the den? Why was she awake? Let's turn to her personality again. She is curious. Well, we know that curiosity can draw someone to do many things. In this case, we're going to add a reason why Jadzia is acting like she is.

Aeryzi was asleep and Jadzia was happy she hadn't woken her up with the tumble. She herself couldn't sleep. The cricket was bad enough with its *chirp chirp chirp*, she was determined to chase it out of the den so she could get to sleep. She didn't want to wake her mother though. She needed sleep.

Now we have added why Jadzia is awake, why she was bouncing around, and why she looked at the lioness. Now we have depth to our post. Last question: How?

How will others react?

This is what builds the RP. We don't know how to answer this question because we are not Aeyrzi. So, now we wait till she responds. She will respond her action. Maybe she does wake up but pretends she doesn't. Maybe she was awake the whole time because the cricket chirping was annoying her as well. I mean, let's face it, crickets are pretty freakin annoying.

Now, when she responds, we start the process all over again.

Follow these steps, and it will really help you with your posting. It will help you build confidence, and will help you develop your own style.

Hey guys, Due to some real life crap interfering. Nistral is scheduled to return in 10 hours and 45 minutes. However, Toxic & I are on our way to bed and there is still a lot of setup to do. (Get people in position, explain several details to everyone, etc. ) Therefore, Nistral's return is going to suffer the following setback:

1: He will be delayed until we can finish setting up but no later than Friday @ Midnight.

Should the setup not be completed by this time, with everyone in position, Nistral will return and it will have to be dealt with as it happens.

Death of Nistral

Hey everyone! So, me and Kai were talking last night, and came up with something we wanted to pass by you all. We got to thinking, we want this fight to draw out for a bit, and to really be a fun experience. Something that can give everyone a chance, and really open it to everyone getting a hit in before his death.

So, with that said. We have come up with a different character sheet style in mind (That we will go over with everyone as ask their ideas on, and then release after this plot is over.) For this event, we are going to give everyone hit points, for now the same about, everyone having 100.

We are also setting a limit to two actions, this meaning, you can Move and attack, attack twice, move twice, or do a large action taking up both (Like a shaman chanting something up, that would take the first action, and the outcome the second.) This gives everyone time to get in a reaction, and makes it fair. Also, each attack, will have their own set of damage, preset by Kai and I who, will subtract it from Nistral’s Hitpoints. We will be using hearts at the bottom of his post to simulate who has what hp. SOOOOO When Nistral makes a move, he will post everyone’s hp (D&D SLANG FOR HIT POINTS), including his own at the bottom of his post.

Now, with all that said, and put there. The new character sheet idea. We want your OPINION on this

We are thinking of giving a Skills, and attributes style to your character, this shows what skills you are good at. You will be given skills based off your class, and attributes. YOU get to set your attributes.

This will help us in events to calculate how well you can succeed at something, AND lets you have an actual visual to your character’s strengths and weaknesses, and look at the person you are rping with well, their reasoning is higher than mine, so they make know the right answer, or they are faster, so will likely win the race, so I should post losing by a few seconds, or WOW, their persuasion is high, they would so convince my character into believing them!

Every Adult will start with 10 points to each Attribute, 5 for cubs and adolescents.

So I am going to do Zem here. This would be her base.

Look at that, I took points to be a shaman, because my character watched the shaman, and helped her. I am tired of being Queen (pfft as if right?) and want to become a shaman. Now, you are wondering how this effects hit points and damage right? Well here we goooooo!!!!!

So, let’s take a look at Zem here.

We can see here, that Zemmy pooh has 10 to her damage The way this breaks down is, for every 10 in Physical Attack you get 1 point to your attack. So its claws +1, bite +1. This will help the pride take game and lions down quicker in events. (Nistral better watch out D:<)

Health: 10
--Resistance/Poison: 3
--Resistance/Damage: 3
--Health Bonus: 4


Now is hit points. As you see here, Zem has a health bonus of 4. As it is set, you get half a heart for 5 health bonus, and a full heart for 10. Well, Zem is so close D: Maybe she should of stayed a queen and just added that point huh? Lol

Poison resistance, is how long you can go before you die of being poisoned, and how long before a shaman has to get to you in roleplay time.

Damage resistances, is much like health bonus. For every 5 is half a heart of damage taken away from the hit. Meaning 10 is a full heart, 15 is a heart and a half and so on.
