The clock ticked ominously closer and closer to the twelve, midnight looming ominously before the Hidden Lands. The heavy fog, which had earned the land its famed moniker, had settled, adding a thick mist to the air that made it very difficult to see past a couple steps at a time. Ryndal, who had been stationed this chilly Christmas Eve in the thick of the forest in the most seclusive Temple of Time, pawed the ground anxiously and restlessly. Each year, the unwanted task of guarding this ancient and mysterious temple, hidden so much by leaves and vines woven throughout the centuries that it was pretty much obscured by view even in broad daylight, fell on the kitsune that drew the shortest candy cane in lots; the difficulty lied not in standing guard outside an stone structure that no one cared enough to approach but in making it in time for sledding duties. Regular reindeer were not suited to the climate and conditions of these lands and the children could not go without this treasured tradition, and so all the Royal Guard Patrol kitsunes had been assigned this mandatory task.

Ryndal tried to strain his ears in what he perceived to be 1 hour intervals, though it was difficult to tell. The constant rustling of leaves and waves of wind did not help matters. Looking downwards, he silently counted the number of tick marks, each representing an hour that had passed by. *1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ....6* he whispered, before looking up. According to his calculations, the clock had struck midnight. However, the church bells, which normally rang out loudly as a signal for all members of the royal patrol, remained silent. Ryndal paced around, hoping to catch the melancholy drone of the great church bell, but heard nothing. Listless and growing to be a bit paranoid, he decided to leave his post in search of his comrades. However, strangely enough, the further he moved away from his starting guard post, the closer he seemed to where he came from: in other words, he was completely and utterly lost. Shaking his head and calming himself, reminding himself that this was perhaps to be expected and that he was foolish to wait this long, he continued on what he considered to be the correct path. *step step step step* Until at long last, he had to admit that he was lost.

Upon hearing a very loud rustling sound right behind him and seeing a black silhouette, Ryndal fled and ran as far away as possible, his heart pounding wildly as he thought of only to escape. Sides heaving, he didn't stop until he could no longer hear his follower. Looking up, he was a bit crestfallen, though not entirely surprised, to find that he was back in his original starting point. However, what was surprising, was that there seemed to be a faint glow from within the temple. He looked curiously at it --- the temple, for as long as he had known about it and heard from his family, had never shown any signs of life or occupation. Tip toeing forward, he walked cautiously forward, past the mossy entrance and the gnarled branches and the fallen logs and trees that led to inside the temple. As he inched closer and closer to the light, he heard a voice call out, "You may come in, Ryndal. I have been waiting for you." Ryndal, startled, had half a mind to bolt out of there, but the voice was so warm and beckoning, drawing him in further within the depths of the temple ruins. Peeping around, he went closer and closer to the light, until he saw a jolly elderly man, dressed in a suit of red with black boots and a fine beard any kitsune would be proud of, standing by a table next to a fire.

"Ahh, Ryndal...you must be wondering why you are here," the old man said, chuckling.
"why -- yes -- I--I" Ryndal stammered.
"You have somewhere to be, at this hour?"
Ryndal nodded before replying reluctantly, "Yes. I am needed to help distribute the gifts to the Hidden Lands children."
"It appears to be so..." the old man said, murmuring. "But now you are here. Do you know the purpose of this temple?"
"No--no I'm afraid not."
"It seems mysterious and hidden enough in daylight without any reason to guard," the old man said, eyes twinkling. "But you know, we keep a very important treasure here: memories of the past. Memories of grieving, anger, joy -- memories of children laughing on Christmas morning and playing with their families and friends, cherishing another precious year gone by. And we come here, at times when the memories are close to being forgotten, to rekindle them, with a bit of fire, magic, and" he paused for a moment, "help from you."
"Me???" Ryndal stuttered. "What can I do??"
"I want you to give back to the children, what Christmas means!" he said, laughing merrily. "Here, take these antlers and red nose to guide your way out of the mist.
"and let the children, discover the magic of Christmas."

The antlered Nozitsune stood at the crest of the tallest hill in the forest, illuminated only by the light of the moon's rays against the backdrop of the starless indigo sky. It is here he spent his nights, gazing out across the expanse of land exposing rolling hills, and bokeh cities nestled amongst them. From a young age he had always sought a quiet, solitary existance, away from his littermates and other creatures, but something about hearing the laughter and joy of children brought him a happiness like no other, enough to make his bobbed tail twitch with anticipation. He remembered with happiness the times when the children played in the forest, a festival of coloured coats and boots accompanied with endless laughter. It was then the rare, shy nozitsune would show his face, poking his white-banded snout through the branches in curiousity before prancing with glee at the children who looked on with amazement. Occassionally, the children would bring gifts - a soft blanket smelling of the fire and of comfort, a wooly hat (that wouldn't fit but would be accepted with love nonetheless) and finally, a personal favourite, a ragged, worn red scarf with years of use evident in the rough edges and loose threads but showing the unmistakable signs of a treasured item.

It was when he envisioned memories like these, when the snow was drifting down in small flakes and flurries that he felt the desire to leap for joy and to run through the tall trees, prancing like the reindeer the children so often referred to him as, letting his small lithe body charge around, behaving like the young zune cubs on experiencing their first snow. In the morning, all that would be left behind as evidence of his nightly adventures would be the pawprint indentations left behind, already covered with a light dusting of snow. The nozitsune however would be curled up, resting his antlered head against the forest floor, waiting for the laughter of children to awaken him from his soft slumber.
