Species Info

(An-fain-ee-um) Amph- coming from the word "amphibian" and -anium" coming from the word "Cranium".

These are semi-aquatic anphibians. They lay between 2-5 eggs per clutch, and the females take care of and protect the eggs. The eggs take between 5-20 days to hatch, depending on the conditions around them. The eggs give little away to what their true colours may be. A female can have up to 2 clutches in a year, and the breeding seasons are in summer and winter.

They do not have gills, so will need to come out of water to breathe. They can stay underwater for a maximum of 30 minutes at a time. Their skin is moist, and they breathe through their skin. They live in freshwater, and saltwater can very easily become a problem for them, and possibly result in death.

The skulls of the Anphanium are always on show, and it rattles as they vocalize. Skin colours tend to be more natural (greens, browns, oranges, blues etc.) Eye colours vary greatly, and can be almost any colour. Mutations can happen, however they’re very rare, and lethal mutations never make it in the wild.

They can be found in many different tropical climates. They are never found in arid or tundra climates, and they tend to stay away from humans as much as possible. They can be kept as pets/in zoos, so long as sufficient space is offered, as well as all the needed nutrients and environmental conditions.

These are omnivores. They tend to swallow prey whole, which consists of: Fish, small mammals, other small amphibians, and insects. They will also feed off of algae and other water based plants. Babies tend to stay in the water, but as they mature, they stray more onto land.

Anphaniums are venomous. They can inject a concoction of neurotoxins and haemotoxins strong enough to kill 6 adult human beings per bite. They are highly resilient to their own species venom, however, females have been known to be more venomous than their male counterparts, as well as more territorial.

Males boast a large throat sack that inflates when threatened, or to attract mates/terrify rival males, which also comes in a variety of colours. These do not form until they are fully grown, which is around 3 years old.
They tend to stand at an average of 1ft from the top of their skull to the base of their front foot. They are usually solitary, however they may form bachelor groups which can consist of up to 10 individuals.
They don’t form territories, and travel most of their lives, stopping only for a few days when it’s breeding season. During these seasons, they will use their throat sacks to intimidate rival males, and impress the females nearby.

Females tend to be slightly smaller, and appear thinner although this is mainly due to the lack of throat sack. Females do not require throat sacks, as they do not need to attract mates, or fend of rival Anphaniums. They are fully grown at around 2 years old.
On average, they are 8” from the top of their skull to the base of their front foot. Females rely on groups to thrive, and groups can consist of numbers between 3 to 25 specimens. There is no leader, but more of a matriarch.
Females are incredibly territorial, and will fight to the death against enemy groups or lone males. The only time females will accept other Anphaniums on their territory is during mating season, and they will only tolerate males for a few days at most.

Neonates/Juveniles are around half the size of a full grown female. They have a tadpole like tail, which helps them swim to catch food, and swim away from predators whilst they’re growing. By the time they are adults, the tail has completely disappeared.
Once they reach around 1 year, 6 months old, the males will be chased off, and they will stay together until they’re fully grown before splitting up and travelling alone.
Females will stay with the group until they mature at 2 years old, and at this time, some will disband and form groups of their own, whilst others will stay. They stay in and near water much more than their adult counterparts, and have a diet that is primarily algae and insects.
