Threll was an interesting cub even at birth. Born with white patches all over his body his mother first thought that her first and only cub would die at an early age. But as he aged, he not only grew stronger he also grew into a bit of a problem child.
He would occasionally lie to get out of trouble, cheat in games or training and be overly critical of his fellow cubs to the point of bullying. The current king, King Galgamesh, had a feeling that this child would become a problem for his pride, but he didn't have the heart to simply abandon him so he went to his mother, Dawn, and asked her to punish him more harshly whenever he was lying or being cruel.
She agreed and did so. She would make him go to bed without dinner. Keep in the cave without being able to go out and play and bared her fangs at her own child but he only grew more problematic.
One night, after being punished by having no dinner and being forced to stay in the cave all day by his mother, he snuck out while the pride was asleep. He went into the forest to find and torment some small animals by the waterfall he always went to when he was feeling pent up or angry. A forest that always smelled like death, good thing he always found the smell of death oddly relaxing.
As he searched for victims he felt a strange presence. It was like a smoke was clogging up his lungs and making it difficult to breathe as well as making him feel a sense of dread and fear. He looked around for a bit before roaring to try and scare the potential threat off, but the only thing that was scared off were birds resting in the trees above. He then proceeded to smell the air and the ground but all he managed to breathe in was more of the forests God awful stench.
"Where are you!? Show yourself, you coward!" he snarled, quickly growing tired of the dread suffocating him.
"Who said we wanted you to be afraid, young one..." an amalgamation of voices whispered in his ear, making him jump. "There is no need to feel afraid. Follow us, young one." The voices floated away from his ear and towards the nearby waterfall.
He squinted at the waterfall, suspicious of the voices, but his curiosity got the best of him.
He took slow cautious towards the fall, following the incoherent whispers.
As he got closer the whispers got clearer. They were chants. Chants of curses, chants of blessings, prayers and pleadings. He was confused ... but also intrigued.
He could feel the mist of the water tickling his nose and wetting his developing mane. He stared into the falls listening to the whispers. Then he noticed something. He noticed a shadow ... an oddly shaped, un-moving shadow. He tilted his head trying to get a better grasp of the shadow. It appeared to be a stick stuck into the ground with 3 circular objects attracted to the sides of it.
"Do not be afraid, young one." the whisperers spoke again.
He jumped through the falls and into a cave. He cautiously walked up to the object and discovered that it was a bone stuck into the ground with 3 human skulls as well as small rodent skulls tied to it.
"What is this thing..." he whispered to himself.
"We are shamans of Voodoo." the replied, startling him once again.
"Voodoo?"
"Yes. Our village punished us for our practices by death. They attempted to burn our bodies but because of our magic our skulls remained so they opted to hide them in this cave."
"Really...?"
Threll sat all day with the Voodoo shamans, hearing about their magic, their gorey death, and Voodoo in general but his conversation was interrupted the the scent and sound of a male lion; a male the was coming in his direction.
He ducked down and hid in the cave behind the shamans, hoping the lion would go away, but this lion was seasoned and could already tell that someone had been in his territory.
"I can smell you, cub. Come out. Now."
Threll's fight or flight instincts kicked in and he darted out of the cave but the old lion was still quite fast despite his age and caught him by the tail.
The lion looked down on him with an authoritative expression, he knew that Threll knew that he could kill him without even trying.
"Who are you and what pride do you belong to." he passively demanded his question be answered, his ice eyes boring a hole into his soul.
"I-I am Threll, subordinate of King Galgamesh..." he stuttered, the lion's expression changed to that of surprise.
"Galgamesh ... the subordinate of Hakauchi... I know him. But what I don't know is why his subordinate is in my territory."
"I ... I just like this spot. I come here after my mom is done punishing me or when I get angry. I ... I like messing with the rodents and lizards..." the lion raised a brow in response, before lowering it and staring at him for an uncomfortably long amount of time. He then suddenly bared his fangs, Threll flinched and ducked but instead of being killed he was hoisted into the air by his scruff.
The lion began walking out of the forest, Threll was too afraid to ask where they were going.
At around sundown the old lion and a tired Threll arrived at Galgamesh's pride, who were all quite a buzz as every able bodied member appeared to be looking for something.
The old lion dropped his cargo causing him to hit his lower back on the hard ground. He then let out a roar, a roar that was louder and more ferocious than his primal king's has ever been.
Everyone looked in their direction and Galgamesh and Dawn came running towards them.
Dawn swiped her cub from the lion with a grown before stepping back and letting Galagmesh take her place.
"What are you doing here Kirotoma?" he snarled.
"Is that a way to thank me after I spared your cub's life despite him being in my territory?" he said blankly. The primal king looked back at the unharmed cub then back at Kirotoma.
"Leave." he demanded.
"With pleasure, just be sure to keep your rats out of my territory." Everyone was on edge until her disappeared over the horizon, then they collectively breathed a sigh of relief.
"Threll, are you o-" his mother began to speak before she was cut off by Galgamesh's roar.
"What were you THINKING!? You could have been KILLED! Not only that but your death could have reinvigorated a generations long war between us two! We've warned all you cub about Kirotoma, why did you go in his territory!?"
"I ... didn't know it was his." he said blankly. Despite his king being a large primal he no longer scared him; he knew what true fear was.
"What do you mean you didn't know it was his!? You could smell that old lion from a mile away!" Threll did not respond, he only stared coldly at his king, angering him even more. Galgamesh walked up to him and placed a large paw on his back, he knew that he wasn't going to kill him, he was too weak. "Don't you EVER go back there! Never again!" He bared his claws and scratched the hell out of his back, emphasising his sentence and ripping a pained roar out of him.
"Galgamesh!" Dawn cried, shoving the primal away and standing over her child.
"I'm sorry. But he needs to learn how to act. His behavior is going to get him killed!" Dawn backed down slightly and looked down at her cub, who was still curled up in pain.
After many lickings of his wounds from both him and his mother his wounds scarred over and healed, but he was never quite the same.
He was colder and even more ruthless. He would defy his elders and harm other cubs.
All he wanted was to go back to the forest, but he was afraid of what Kirotoma would do to him. He wasn't weak like Galgamesh even though he was much smaller than him.
Despite his fear ... he wanted to see that old lion again.
It was a day before his second birthday when he decided to go back to the forest. He was almost an adult now, if he needed to he could easily defend himself against the old lion.
Sure, it would be safer and more comfortable living under Galgamesh’s rule. Hell, he might even make him king seeing as his pride had few male cubs, but he knew that he wouldn’t learn true strength from such a weak king. That and the whispers of the Voodoo shamans spoke to him. They called him. They could also teach him strength.
He planned to leave that night.
Later, during the night, he awoke and quietly made it out of his designated cave, a cave for strange looking lions such as himself. He quietly walked over to the cave his mother was in and nudged her awake.
“Mmm? … Threll? What are you doing up? What’s wrong?” Dawn mumbled, a worried look in her bright eyes.
“I’m leaving. I no longer want to be a part of this pride.” he said bluntly before licking his mother’s forehead in goodbye. Despite his mother’s punishments, he knew that she loved him with all her heart and for that he appreciated and loved her back. He just wished she could take her with him, but he knew she would never leave this pride. Galgamesh took her in when her old pride didn’t want her as a cub, she was indebted to him.
“Wait what? Why? You’re barely an adult! And you haven’t done your coming-of-age ceremony, at least stay until-”
“No.” he cut her off “I’m sorry but I’ve made my decision a long time ago.”
“When!?”
“When I was brought back here by Kirotoma.”
“Kirotoma … You … you don’t plan on going back there do you…?” the tiredness was completely gone from her eyes, now replaced by fear.
“Yes.”
“No … no, no, no ,no. Threll! Please! Reconsider. You can leave but please, just don’t go back there!” she struggled to keep her voice down.
“You cannot stop me anymore, mother. I’m sorry.” tears began to well up in her eyes as she put a paw over her mouth to muffle her sobs.
“Where … did I go wrong …? What did I do wrong?” he gently put his forehead against hers.
“Nothing. You raised me as best you could. … I’ll miss you.” He then turned around and began his journey back to the forest, his mom getting up and calling his name as he left, waking up all the other pride members. But before Galgamesh could wake up and ask what was going one he was already gone.
He would later go back to the forest and once again come face to face with Kirotoma. After he told him why he left the old lion smiled.
“I was secretly hoping I could get you to come back here. I’ll teach you all you need to know, young heir.”
He still spoke with the skulls in the cave and eventually they began teaching him Voodoo. But when they had nothing left to teach him their souls became fulfilled and left the mortal plain. Before they did so, however, they collectively bestowed upon him the title, The Voodoo Whisperer.

I love your writing! It is a bit long, but it’s a very interesting concept for your king ^^
I’ve always thought about doing one of these for my own but never got around to it..
