Backstory
When a week-long hunting trip ends in tragedy, the fate of ten sled dogs hangs in the balance. Used to tough work, but never having had to face the harsh realities of the wilderness without the watchful gaze of their owner, how will they survive when he is suddenly lost to the elements?

The trip was like any other. The team's owner had spent the weekend preparing for a short expedition to gather supplies for the winter. The weather was predicted to be cold but calm, and the team set out as they had done many times before. Things can go wrong in the wilds, and wrong it did go. Three days into the trip the man lost his way and strayed out too far from home, unable to find his way back. Then the weather moved in. Sudden and ruthless, a blizzard swept over the team in the night. Caught off guard, it was quick to take the life of the unprepared man. Now alone in the face of the unknown, dogs who are used to the domestic life must change their ways to survive. They will be forced to fight for food, water, warmth, and their lives in the midst of Alaska's grips. Can they beat the odds and survive this struggle?

The sun began to creep over the horizon, the surroundings were quiet and pristine. Frozen, fluffy, snowflakes still drifted down from the clouds steadily. The clearing was wide and open, surrounded on all sides by the forest. Beneath the thick layer of snow lay ten canines, wind-swept and dazed from the sudden storm that had overtaken them the night before. They were now sleeping soundly in the dens the weather had provided for them. In the field stood a lonesome tree, and against that tree pressed tarps that had formed a makeshift tent for their owner. The camp was settled, silent. No life moved from within the plastic sheets and one side had been caved in from the heavy snow. Their sled lay on it's side a distance away from the shelter, half buried with some parts broken off due to a collision with a tree in their haste. The dogs were still attached to the bulky wooden frame by a thick gangline clipped onto their collars. In the distance a raven began to call, finding the ruined tent interesting enough to approach. It landed onto the tarp, sliding off of the slippery surface and causing a commotion as it's wings flapped against the plastic. The ruckus seemed to stir most of the team, their faces suddenly appearing to break the crust of the snow as the noisy bird flew off in fright.

Jericho | Male | Lead
Location: Sled Crash.
Mentions: Wander, Open.

The sudden flapping of wings brought him jolting awake from his dreamless sleep. He struggled to sit up in the hollow he had dug out, not surprised that he had been snowed in. Taking his claws to the layer of ice and snow, he eventually dug his way out. His fur bristled in the chilly air as he broke through. Casting a sleepy gaze over the clearing, he took in the view of his pristine surroundings before pulling himself from his den and shaking the snow from his fur.

'Odd.' The sun was up, but his owner was nowhere to be found. No fire had been made, the air didn't smell of the familiar scents of breakfast. His expression changed to worry as he glanced at the busted sled. How would they get home? Could they go home? Surely the man would know the way now that the storm was over. 'Where is he?' Jericho stumbled through the thick layer of snow towards the tarp, coming to a stop as he reached the end of the gangline, most likely tugging the other lead in his wake. "Sorry." He mumbled over his shoulder, his eyes staying trained on the collapsed tent. 'Something is wrong.' His ears pinned back against his head. He knew there was something off. A creeping feeling of sorrow made it's way into his gut, followed by panic.

Jericho lurched forward, no longer worrying about dragging the other dogs along behind him. Upon growing nearer to the plastic sheet, his fur bristled. There was nothing there, no sign of life. He instinctively took a step back. 'What do we do now?' He stood silent, not really wanting to confirm the apparent. The soft howl of a wolf in the far distance caused his ears to flash forward. Many more began to sound with it and he lifted his head, staring at the tree line. Well, they couldn't stay here. He slowly turned his attention to the other snow-covered team members.

Kavik | Male | Team
Location: Sled Crash.
Mentions: The Team, Open.

Kavik woke abruptly, the fur on his back standing up from the suddenness of the noise. He struggled to stand in the dark space, a shock of panic coursing through his chest as he found himself enclosed in the snow. Bursting out of his warm den, he was suddenly met with the blinding light of day and the stinging cold of the brisk air in his lungs. Glancing around in a daze, he was greeted by the familiar faces of his fellow team members. He sunk away immediately from their gaze. His tail tucked between his legs, he freed his bit of the line from the snow and shook himself.

Glancing forward, his eyes were caught by the brightest thing in the clearing. The caved-in tarp. 'Shouldn't it be.. still standing?' He was suddenly dragged forward by his collar and straightened his legs instinctively to fight against the pull. The sight of one of the lead dogs, Jericho, approaching the tent caused him to tilt his head curiously. It was obvious by the older dog's demeanor that something was wrong. 'Something is wrong? Something is wrong..' The thought echoed over in his mind. His heart began to beat in his chest and he flattened himself against the cold earth. No. Soon the man would emerge from the tent and they would be on their way home. Right?

The chorus of howls that surrounded the team caused him to flatten himself more. He needed to hide somewhere. His eyes darted around wildly and he reeled back against the gangline, backing up until his collar was tight against the back of his neck. With a vigorous shake of his head, the leather strap slipped over his ears and he was free. He stood still and stared at the others, unsure of what to do. What could he do? The thought flashed across his mind that he should run. Run and not look back. 'But what will happen to them?' The muscles in his legs tensed as he fought the urge, nervously flashing a gaze towards the woods.

Eden | Male | Team
Location: Sled Crash
Mentions: Jericho, Open.

Sudden tugging on the gangline from both directions finally got Eden to wake up from his very uncomfortable sleep. He slowly stood up and shook himself off, small chunks of snow flying from his fur, although some still clung on through small tangles and mats on his chest and stomach.

Eden sluggishly turned his head to see what the commotion was. Then he saw the caved in tarp, and no man. Confusion was setting in, even in his daze he was getting worried. His gaze kept shifting until his eyes caught Jericho. He tilted his head as to ask what was happening. Eden didn't really exactly have the right words to ask at the moment.

That is until the howls. What's flicking back and forth, he listened to where the sound might have been coming from. This isn't what he expected from a run of the mill run with his team and owner. The fur on his hackles raised and bristled in worry and alarm, breaking up some smaller clumps of snow that still held tightly onto his back.

What was he going to do in this situation? I guess the better question was, what could he do?

Luka | Male | Swing
Location: Sled Crash
Mentions: The Team, Open.

Luka's eyes peered open at the sound of rapid wing beats of a raven. The snow clogged his nose and he sneezed before taking a moment to look at his surroundings.

It was all so.. Quiet. He really didn't like that. With his hackles slowly starting to raise, he shot up, practically ignoring the thick snow around him. Shaking his semi-long fur free of the powdery white that now seemed to cover everything and everyone, he got a better look. "No owners." He whispered to no one in particular.

He just stared at the empty sight, missing the smell of breakfast meats and such, before the piercing howl snapped him out of his thoughts. 'That's not good.'

Wander | female | lead | location: sled crash | mentions: Jericho, open

The harsh cries of a raven, accompanied by a sudden, sharp tug on Jericho's line beside her, was what woke the wolf-dog from her sleep. Wander's blue eyes snapped open, and she turned to utter a retort to Jericho - only to stop in her tracks. Something was wrong. The lines were tangled up, there was no familiar food smell, and a quick glance around revealed that the man's canvas tent was collapsed.

Her eyes moved to Jericho. Her fellow lead looked just as surprised as she felt - nothing like this had ever happened before. She shook herself a bit, shaking her harness, before turning her body towards him and asking, "What happened?"

Atlas | Male | Wheel
Location: Sled Crash
Mentions: Leads, Team, Open

As the gangline was tugged at sharply, the large brute at towards the back grunted in annoyance. He tried his best to settle into a sleep once more, but his ears perked at the distant howls of wolves. The male's head shot up, dark eyes flicking along the snowy treeline as he tried to process what was going on through his groggy state of mind. He then looked towards the area their human would normally be, usually sitting by a fire and preparing breakfast, but this morning the man was nowhere to be seen.

Atlas suddenly understood the panic his teammates were currently facing, and so the large dog stood to his paws and shook himself free of the snow clinging to his thick fur. He looked towards the leads, watching as Jericho looked around for any sign of the human, which there was none. Unlike his other teammates, Atlas appeared calm. He was in the midst of a situation he had never been in before, yet he deemed that panicking was not the correct thing to do. Surely their owner would come back to them, appear to them and take them home.

For some reason, although Atlas tried to reassure himself that their owner would come back, he felt as though that wouldn't be the case.

Karla| Female| Team dog|
Location: Sled crash
Mentions:Team,open

As the gangline tugged at her collar signaling to the young mutt that the other members of the team has started to wake up,she emerged behind the pile of snow that served as her sleeping spot under the cold snow storm.
It was the first real bad one she experienced yet,and she had trouble sleeping during what sounded like the distorted howls of inhabitants of her mothers tales.
But that did not stop her from vigouriously shaking her long fuzzy coat, stretching out a bit and yawn, her hor breath matrializing as white smoke before it quickly cooled down and vaporized.
She curiously looked at the destroyed tent and it's surrounding, confused as why her teammates who she looked up to were reeking of fear, and why hasn't their musher appeared from his own den yet?
Sure the night was tough and humans had pathethically little fur,but they were smart creatures that borrowed other animals pelts when needed and always knew what they wanted.
Surely their musher was fine,right?

But then where was he?
Maybe he was out somewhere in the woods doing some human stuff or searching for something that got lost in the storm?
She could tell that everything wasn't as how it was supposed to be,but it couldn't be possibly that horrible afterall.
The young dog just simply didn't think it was possible that her life would be turned upside down just under a night, that she would have to reform her ambitions of being a good sled (occasionally maybe hunting) dog,and would have to fight to stay alive even in the first place.

As she was pondering, she decided it would be a good idea to also ask her teammates for some information or better yet guidance.
So she sit down, letting her sickle tail drop onto the snow as she tilted her head a bit.
“Soooo... what do we do now? Any pla-“
Her question got cut in half by the howls of other canines, making her neat triangle formed ears point backwards.
It was far away, but something feelt off with it and soon Karla realised what was wrong with it.
“That...
That didn't sound like dogs...”

Jericho | Male | Lead
Location: Sled Crash.
Mentions: The Team, Open.

He was startled as Wander's voice broke his pondering, accompanied by the jingling of the gangline. He backed away from the tent, his posture stiff. "I-" He began to mutter something, but stopped. Running the sentence over in his mind before speaking. "I don't know. Maybe the cold was too much for him?" He answered, a grave tone to his voice. "I don't know what we do now..." He mumbled out, returning back to silence.

'Wolves?' He turned a questioning gaze to Kavik as the timid male spoke. He had only seen wolves after they had been dispatched by the musher. Caught in traps or gunned down, used for the warmth of their pelt, they were just another wild animal to him. "We got turned around in the dark, I don't know which way home is but-" He said bluntly, turning to stare at the other dogs. "I know we shouldn't stay here." Jericho hesitated, regretting having to be the one to say it. They couldn't stay here. With their owner gone, they would only starve at the end of their collars.

"Our collars..." He murmured under his breath, peering down at the gangline. He snapped his eyes back towards Kavik, who had already freed himself. 'How did he do it so easily?' Perhaps it was his folded ears that allowed him to wiggle loose.

Jericho pulled back against the line, the collar slipping up his neck but getting caught on the backs of his ears. He grunted in annoyance and finally stepped forward to relieve the tension. He stared down at the woven cord. Having been scolded harshly in his puppy years for chewing on his leash, the thought caused him to hesitate. 'Well, what choice do I have?" He sighed and took the tough material in his teeth, gnawing it between his molars. To his relief, the cordage began to tear apart as he chewed. As the line flopped to the ground, he stood and stared at it with the half attached to his collar still in his mouth. Quite unsure of what to do next.

Kavik | Male | Team
Location: Sled Crash.
Mentions: Jericho, Karla, Open.

Kavik took a few tentative steps away from the others before swiveling back around and returning. His flopped ears were flat against his skull and eyes wide. "Not d-dogs... wolves." He sputtered out in response to Karla, his voice trailing off as he uttered the last word. Of course there were no dogs out here! Besides the team, of course. His eyes widened as Jericho spoke. 'We're doomed. I don't even know where the nearest town is.' His mind raced as a sense of dread pelted down on him. Of course he had been feral once, but this situation was different and he was different now. Soft from life with humans, and now lost. What could he do?

'We shouldn't stay here. We need to leave.' He wanted to suggest, but the words hung in his throat. He stood by idly as the others chattered, tension building in his muscles at the thought of waiting here to die in the snow. Relief washed over him as Jericho suggested it in his place, though he was confused as to why they seemed hesitant on leaving. His eyes glanced towards the bright tarp. 'Ah.. of course.' They had an attachment to humans, a prospect that he could never grasp no matter how he tried.

Eden's legs were shaking gently and you could see the whites of his eyes. He knew something was definitely up and he felt very uncomfortable without their owner. "Wolves? You've got to be joking."

Eden pulled and tugged at his collar, trying to get it off. His body wasn't slender enough to slip through however. He knew at that point, chewing it off was the only option left. His teeth were grinding against the material, the sound of it racking around in his head. He hated it, but Eden continued until it snapped off the line.

"What are we going to do now? Where do we go? The man is gone." Eden said to no one in particular. He was just hoping someone knew what to do.

Luka | Male | Swing
Location: Sled Crash
Mentions: The Team, Open.

Eyes and ears pointed to the sounds of wolves, Luka shook again. He looked towards his team, but seeing as no one else really knew what to do or what was happening either, he just decided to get out of this stupid collar. He always hated the way they felt around his neck. Always a little too loose for his slender frame.

With a few tugs backwards, paws digging into the snow for grip, he popped out of his collar, falling backwards from the force he was using. He shook once more, sending a small flurry of snow around him. "Do you think they'll come back?" Luka pipped, trying to be a little hopeful.

There was a small hint in his voice, that in actuality, he really wasn't as optimistic as he wanted to be.

Wander | female | lead | location: sled crash | mentions: the whole team

Gnawing off her harness as Jericho had done, Wander shook off the straps and stood tall in the snow. These dogs would panic for sure. She was willing to bet that most had never seen or spoken to a wolf, and probably had no clue how to handle one. As the oldest dog of the team, as well as one who had in fact spoken with (not to mention plenty of other things) wolves, she felt rather responsible for these dogs.

"Listen up!" she barked to the team. "I'm sure you've all heard the wolves by now, and if not... there are wolves. Our musher probably won't wake up, so it's up to us. Get your harnesses off - if the wolves do come over here, being stuck to a sled isn't going to help anything." She paused, digging her paw into the snow. "I've... dealt with wolves before. Yes, they're wild, but they're canines just like us. Honestly, I'd rather meet wolves than bears or even humans," she concluded. "Does anyone have suggestions as to where we go from here?"

The large ruddy-coloured dog shook himself, leaning down and bring up one white paw to wipe snow away from his nose.

Koyuk watched the other dogs slip free of their harnesses before turning his own fangs on his. Something about it felt wrong. He'd never been a leash chewer, but still, somehow he felt like he should be getting scolded. But he wasn't- no one was there to scold him. He pushed down the thoughts that there would never be any human to again. In between bites and headshakes, working himself free, he answered Luka.

"If he can, I imangine he will. But...", his speech slowed slightly, becoming more focused and soft, "We should assume that he can't. Wander's right. We can't sit and wait out here, at the very least."

He shook once more, now free of the harness. He stepped out of the chewed-up remains and glanced over the rest of the dogs, double-checking that everyone was there and unharmed.

Atlas watched as his teammates wriggled their ways out of the harnesses, some reaching over to bite at the material and tear it apart. He decided it was for the better now, since their musher was no where in sight and the sound of wolves was foreboding in the distance. He followed after the others, doing his best to try and tug his way out of the harness like most did. His size alone restricted his movements, now halting the dog's attempts at escaping as he accepted the fact that he would have to tear at the material. He reached over, gnawing at the harness until it loosely fit his frame and he could slide out of it with ease. He gave himself a good shake, the feeling of the harness now absent and quite odd in his opinion. He was so used to having it on that it felt weird that it wasn't now.

His ears flicked over to the voice the spoke up, recognizing the tone to be Wander's. He listened quietly, eyeing his teammates to make sure everyone had managed to get the harness off and didn't need any additional help. His attention turned back to the lead as she spoke. She was right, at this point they'd have to leave if they wanted to avoid an encounter with wolves. Although bears sounded scarier, he still doubted they would fare well against wolves. At her question the wheel took a glance at his teammates, curious to see their reactions and to see if anyone did have a suggestion.

Jericho | Male | Lead
Location: Sled Crash > The Wilderness

Jericho gave a tilt of his head, taking a few steps back from his former tether. "The sun rises in the East and sets in the West." He said, dropping the lead from his mouth as he spoke. It was something his father had taught him, and he had never really given it any thought. It wasn't really needed when he was being told where to go his entire life. At least they would have a sense of direction now.. but what good would that do if they didn't know where they were? "Well, we can't go wrong by going in the opposite direction of the wolves." He stated bluntly, "So that would be... East?" He said tentatively, eyes gazing over the others.

His ears faltered and then lay flat as the others spoke. 'Will the human come back?' For some reason, Jericho felt as though he wouldn't. If he could, why would he still be gone? 'But what if he does...' He couldn't help but feel a bit of guilt in his stomach. "We'll find a town!" He suggested, ears returning to a perk. "If the musher comes back, he'll surely look for us in a town. Right?" If it was nearby, that would be all the better. Now filled with purpose, he turned and began trodding through the thick snow, creating a path behind him. Pausing momentarily, he glanced behind him to see if the others were following. "Well?"

His paws treaded lightly through the snow, trying his best not to trip over any loose branches hidden under the white, powdery blanket. This was a real life or dead situation and he definitely wasn't ready for it, but did he really have a choice in the matter?

Pushing his own anxieties to the side, he followed after Jericho through the small trail he had made for the team. "What do we do after we reach a town? Just wait?" Eden asked with a soft and quiet time. It was almost like he was trying to not give their position away.

"I guess you're right. There's really no point in stayin' put." Luka responded, his eyes flicking from one direction to the other, but bounding after the group. "This is going to be like a real adventure though. Not just one of our runs." He seemed oddly enthusiastic about the situation they were in.

His mind was stuck on the thought of going somewhere new without the owners. He wondered if this was maybe a blessing in disguise. It probably wasn't however.

With a glance at his fellow wheel dog Atlas and a good-natured ear flick, Koyuk began taking steps in Jericho's tracks, his larger frame pushing the snow aside further. He acknowledged Luka with an agreeable hum, and lowered his large head, taking a second to consider the younger dog's words.

"A real adventure," he mumbled, "and all the trials that come with it."

Koyuk shook the concerns of freezing and wolves and separation from his head, smiling half-heartedly.
"I'm with Jericho, a town is the smartest place to head for, in my opinion. "

“Hey hey hey, don't leave me behind!”
The short black dog yelped as she skiddled to her paws after she had been struggling with her own harness after she accidentally tangled it up with the gangline, trying first to chew it through before she realised that it was smarter to bite a certain spot where the structure of the harness seemed most vulnerable.

“I'm not that fond of befriending wild wolves.”
She huffed loudly for herself after she catched up to the rest of the team, only to stop for a moment and cast a glance back at the destroyed tent, furrowing her brows and her tail dropping a bit.
She couldn't help but feel a twinge of worry for their musher,at least she assumed from Wanderer that they still could comunicate with eachother, but how would that go with a human?
Sure, the dogs could understand commands and signals, but it took some time to understand and Karla doubted that the wolves would care to listen even if they understood the human.
However humans always seemed to know everything, and their musher shouldn't be that different.
Maybe he knew how to avoid them, and was already waiting for them in the town.

It didn't take that long for the young dog to gain her faith back, naivly trusting that this was just a big adventure where she could learn so much.
There weren't any prints of boots in the snow, but Karla decided it was probably some human oddity or that they faded in the weather, and she strode on with confidence right behind the wheel dogs.
She decided to invite herself in the small conversation that Koyuk and Luka had.

“Hell yes, ja!
It almost sounds like the beggining one of mamma's stories, and I get to be one of the brave dogs in the story!
Gosh I'm a bit worried but this really exciting actually!
Has any of you been in a situation like this?
Any exotic stories that I have been missing?”
She cheerfully asked, eyeing the surrounding dogs.
