This is my (other) entry. I've improved a lot since I first drew for this contest, and I wanted to enter again.
This species is an underwater creature. Their coats, although all unique, resemble the waves and the ocean floor. This particular species is wingless, to help them glide quickly through the water in an aerodynamic fashion. They have sharp beaks to eat seabound birds and fish easier. They also have long fur on their backs, which grows as they age - hence, the length of their hair is an important indicator of their age, as the longer it is the older they are. In this way, the fur acts like the rings of a tree.

This dragon lost part of its horn from an encounter with a fishing boat. When surfacing to catch a bird to eat, it was caught in a fishing net. Found hours later by the industrial fishing boat, the crew, in their fear, attempted to kill the poor creature. It was able to escape but at the expense of part of a horn.

There are less than 90 of the rare dragon species in the wild. They are, at the largest size, 7 feet tall and 11 feet long. When they are feeling any strong emotions, iridescent gills rise from their fuzzy necks. When they are particularly scared and their gills pop out, it helps to ward off the cause of their fear - so in this way, the shining gills are a defense mechanism as well, although they don't have many natural predators in the wild. When they are mating, these gills also appear.

...you wanted a tragic backstory?
I like to think that this guy is a general for an army, having climbed his way up the ranks through many a battle. He can't fly as fast or agile as most dragons,. given the damage on his wings, but can still manage fine on his own.
His long back spines can go up or down depending on emotion, generally going up when threatened or suprised, and laying back when relaxed.
(I did this in pencil/colored pencil btw)
