The Wastes Den

The air is thick with the smell of smoke, and ash coats your tongue. Coming into the den is a large male, eyes of yellow glowing in the dark cave, and his low, rough laughter shaking the air. His eyes wondered to and from the cubs, eyes landing on a small female cub.


Looking up at phoenix he pulled back a fake smile, “well it seems that this place has changed a bit since the last time I’ve came here…more muddy. I’ll be taking a cub home for my pride, some of the old bats are starting to wear down. I need more beauties to produce me heirs and muties that I can adore. How about..that one!”

He points a clawed paw towards the semi white and gray cub that lays in the corner with some others. “Don’t worry she’ll be feed and cared for etc. Also tell coy I said hello the next time he comes around would you? It’s been so long since I’ve seen my friend.”

Phoenix instantly did not like the smoke scented stranger, she growled low but did nothing else that could be deemed as hostile. Looking over at the cub in question, she noticed the little one appeared fearful of the large lion but still got to her paws to walk over on shaking limbs.

"Do you wish to go?" Phoenix asked in her charred voice, putting out a paw to stop the cub.

"Anywhere's better than here." The little one sniffled, shoving past Phoenix to go to the lion's side. Phoenix was torn on what to do, but ultimately knew it was the cub's choice. She sat down, nodding at the cub before glaring at the lion.

"Tell him yourself." She spat at the ground, tail flicking back and forth in anger and discomfort.

You're almost surprised that a crowd hasn't formed, the lioness that walks in is so striking. A smattering of doubloon rosettes do little to cover the rest of her pelt; pinks and greens and purples, near every color you've ever seen, with her swirled black and red eyes completing what shades are missing. Not only that- this lioness is a ferus; with long fangs and a short-tufted tail, her larger body makes her hard to miss. It truly speaks to how gloomy and dusty these lands are that the ferus and her far-overshadowed companion manage to be completely ignored until they enter the Wastes Den.

"Hello all!" The talking paint palette speaks, chin in the air, a far grander tone than the setting would suggest. Cubs turn their head to the noise, or flinch- the ferus's companion shoulder checks her, and shoots a look. The brown lioness holds her head low and hackles up, eyes darting around and ears swiveling to the entrance. The ferus lowers her head and her voice, gesturing Pheonix over; clearly the oldest in the den.

"Sorry to make you all jump, already getting ahead of myself. My name is Teesara Soory, and this is Falconflip. We were looking for Moogly, your den here has an adolescent that we are able to take and wanted to speak to her about it."

"You're much older than one year," the other lioness you now know as Falconflip speaks up. Her tone is more grave, and she is clearly guarded, in contrast to Teesara, who has such a masterful brave face she herself might believe it real.

"Where is Moogly?" Falconflip demands again. "I've never seen her leave this cave. I'm supposed to let her know I'm okay." The lion's voice begins to break. She knows the answer she'll receive.

Phoenix jumps to her paws at the sudden shouted greeting, eyes staring holes in Teesara Soory. She growls a bit, only calming down when they apologized and mentioned Moogly.

"She's dead." Phoenix hadn't known the lioness, so there was little emotion to her charred voice, "I am sorry for your loss. And glad you're okay." She nods her head to Falconclip, mentioning how happy Moogly must be to see the lioness in such good condition. She assumed Falconclip had either been one of Moogly's cubs or one of the cubs Moogly saved. Did it matter? She really didn't think so.

Falconflip stutters, mouth open, shaking her head wide-eyed as if she might be able to catch the deceased lioness hiding behind her. Teesara leans lightly on her, shoulder to shoulder in comfort.

"I... she cared for me, the only one who did. She cared for so many lions, I- all of us would've been fodder if it weren't for her," Falconflip's permanently furrowed brow somehow becomes even sadder, and she presses her face into Teesaras, probably her queen, colorful leg. "I didn't even get to say goodbye, even when I left. I didn't even get to say thank you! And she was left to die in this," she pulls her head away and glares daggers into the ceiling, into the dirt of this land, "this awful place." Her grief has roiled to anger. "And you! You're hardly an adolescent and have to deal with all of this death! This starvation! You'd think the beast would at least have the decency to put an adult in charge, put them through-"

"Falcon," Teesara rumbles. "It's awful. It really is. Everything sucks and is terrible."

"This is not helping."

"Shhhush! I'm getting there! Let me be inspirational!" Falconflip rolls her eyes, but lets her queen continue. "Yes it's terrible. And yes it's not fair. But... we're doing the most that we can. We can't interfere with how other prides work, we just can't. It's not how this world works. We can go and beat the shit out of this king-"

"Don't curse! There are cubs!"

"Sorry- I can get all of our hunters and we could go try to kick the king's butt, but we have no say over the laws of these lands. There will just be another evil king after him. Just how only certain lions can live in our territory, something even I can't do anything about, something about this place will always be negative. You know what I mean?"

"Huhff."

"Besides, what would your plan even be to help this lion here? SorryIshould'veaskedyourname- What would you do? Take her place?" Falconflip looked to the ground. Teesara's eyes are soft, and her words are warm despite their harsh meaning.

"We need you at home, and these cubs need her here." Teesara Soory looks back up at Pheonix. "Well, we also need one of the cubs here at home. I've looked at his records- would it be alright if we took..." Teesara trailed off, and lifted her head, not needing more than a moment to find one of the only other adolescents in the den.

The silvery male adolescent probably only skipped through his death sentence because of how small the malnourishment made him look. While other lions of the cave were clearly descendants of Coy Fish, with their rumble or maofelis markings, this lion didn't look at all like the smilus. In fact, neither did Falconflip. Huh.

"Care to live, young one?" Teesara grinned at the lion cub.

Phoenix watched the exchange between Falconclip and Teesara almost impassively. As if this was but a show put on for entertainment. She nodded when Falconclip mentioned her own age, barely into adolhood, and the cruel nature of the pride. Phoenix almost smiled when Teesara began to try and help Falconclip. She sat back, tail swaying calmly as she glanced at the silvery adol that Tessara kept sneaking peeks at. He would go to a fine home, Phoenix nodded her head.

"I will try to do my best to follow Moogly's pawsteps, but I do not think I will ever be able to be as loving as she. It hurts too much if I allow such emotions." Phoenix shrugged, chuffing softly as she motioned the male adol closer.

The male adol swallowed, shaking with fatigue and hunger, but he slowly stumbled his way over to Teesara and Falconclip. He bowed in front of the two lionesses.

"Moogly would be proud." He sniffled, remembering the denmother he had idolized in his early years. Phoenix purred, focusing on how good she should feel to save another soul. And not how badly she wished to leave this place as well.

"I've heard Moogly wished all adopters Shade and Sweetwater on their way home, though I am not too sure what the saying means." Phoenix shrugs, giving the adol a hug goodbye.

"What's your name darling?" Teesara asked the adol, receiving another hearty smack from Falconflip. "What!? I'm being polite!"

"I was a special case Teesara, no lions here have names."

"Well, I don't know! Maybe there's something he wants to be called! I'm not going to turn around and name him fuc-freaking, like, John or whatever if the man has a preferred name!"

Falconflip sighed, before Teesara bursted-

"Oh! I almost forgot!" Her ears perked, "We've got something for you all! It's not much, and I know this isn't, like, an "exchange" of goods, but we have a zebra close by if you're interested in taking some food. Just to make your days easier. We hid it- harder to sneak into a territory with a whole carcass and two lions, I was thinking I could get Falcon and- you," nodding towards the silver adolescent, "you're not off the hook for telling me your name, could get out and I could bring the carcass in. That is, if you're interested." The queen's tufted tail wags slightly.

Phoenix smiles, though the motion does not really reach her eyes, "We would never say no to extra food." She chuffs. The cubs around her stare intently at Teesara as she mentions a zebra carcass, some obviously drooling at the thought of food.

GoldBlood padded through the territory, with a tan lioness behind him. They were moving quickly since it would be near sun rise soon.
"And you're sure that is exactly what he looks like BirEye?" he sounded slightly paniced, but hopeful.
"Positive." she nodded aloe leaves stuffed in his mouth
the two reached the cave they were looking for, GoldBlood looked around worriedly and he found it, or him. An adolecnt with a dark brown coloring and an orange mask.

He slowed down, glad the cub was still there, sighing with relief he looked at the young broodmother and bowed deeply.
"Pheonix, hello again. we brought more aloe for you. and an old friend, BirdEye has gotten her warrior name now, after a long apprenticeship to become a medicine lion."
she put the leaves down infront of Pheonix.
"Medicine lion means i'm more intune with the whispers of our ancestors. And a very special whisper visited me in my sleep, i'm sure you're near tired of hearing her name, but Moogly came and told me of a cub that needed to be taken or he won't make it past sunrise."

Pandora walked in with a spotted lioness. He prowler around for a bit whispering in her ear Occasionally. " Phoenix you wouldn't mind if we took these cubs home with us would you? And would you like some food? My likenesses brought home extra" he flicked his tail as the cubs pounced on it.

Teesara nodded, and rose to her paws. The silver adolescent still stood there, mouth slightly agape, looking back at the other lions in the den then at Teesara.

"Hmm. What was it you wished for us? Cool breezes, sweet water? How about that for a name, Sweet Water? You've got the shimmering pelt to match."

The adolescent spoke for the first time, like a quiet river; "Sounds fine," he still kept his body low.

"Wonderful! I'll bring my two out of this territory, not about to leave them a place they don't need to be any longer, and I'll bring the zebra back for you all. Though," she frowned, "it won't be nearly enough..."

"Teesara, please," Falconflip rolled her eyes again. She must be very well-versed with the ceiling by now. She glanced at Pheonix with a 'can you believe this' look. "It took me ages to convince her not to drag a whole giraffe here. What're you gonna do, hunt on someone else's territory?" Teesara gave a shy grin. "Come on Sweet Water, let's get out of here."

While the two non-muties headed towards the mouth of the den, Teesara lowered her head for a final word with Pheonix. "I'll be right back, but I want to thank you again. Your kindness and care for the lions here make their whole lives, is the Only care many will receive their whole lives. You are far stronger than your king for this. It takes guts and effort to choose to be good, rather than a sack of... butt, like Coy Fish. You will grow brighter than the fire that burned you. And, uhh, I'll be right back." The ferus queen trotted out of the cave.

Phoenix watched as the adol was given a name, purring as he tried it out and found it fit perfectly. She chuffed, laughing softly with Falconflip as Teesara worried about how much meat she was bringing back.

"I have eaten recently, it will be enough for the cubs that remain." She inclined her head, thankful for these two lionesses. Despite how polar opposite the two were, they complimented each other almost perfectly. As Falconclip and Sweet Water left, She turned her attention more onto Teesara. The Ferus queen was large, her muscles evident even beneath her colorful coat and shaggy fur. Phoenix tilted her head, moving slightly closer to hear what Teesara was about to say. Her eyes welled up with tears as Teesara spoke and Phoenix shifted self consciously between her front paws. She opened her mouth to respond, to thank the ferus, but no words came out as she sniffled back her tears. She swiped at her eyes, offering a smile to Teesara when words continued to fail. She would thank her when she returned.

Phoenix jumped a bit when GoldBlood and BirdEye entered. She chuffed, happy to see the two again and purring at the sight of the aloe leaves. They did wonders on soothing her own burns, but they also helped the cubs with their scrapes and aches. Even if the aloe actually didn't do anything, the placebo effect was enough for most cubs to cease their crying and whimpering.

"Hello friends!" She got to her paws, wiping away her tears once more before trotting over to them. She tilted her head to the side, "I've never heard of a medicine lion before, you'll have to tell me more some other time. Coy Fish will be returning soon and I don't want to risk what Moogly worked so hard to build." She knew they would understand, but she was still happy to see them nonetheless. When BirdEye brought up Moogly, she chuckled.

"Why would I tire of hearing her name?" She paused to cough, lungs full of ash and soot, "It would be a shame to let her memory dwindle." She bowed her head to both of them and then cast an eye to the male in question. He was shaking and trying to hide for he knew as well as everyone that his time was running out. Phoenix trotted over to him, only slightly larger than he was, and rubbed her head against his shoulder.

"You're going home." She chuffed, coaxing him out with her and towards GoldBlood and BirdEye. He was shaking, bones poking through skin in horrid angles and mane little more than a few raggedy tufts from the malnutrition, but at least he could walk. He didn't speak, but he seemed relieved to see GoldBlood and the lioness, purring best he could when he neared them.

As she was saying her goodbyes to the trio, Pandora came in. Phoenix watched them from the corner of her eyes until she had given GoldBlood, BirdEye, and the adol each a hug farewell, and then turned to focus solely on the two.

"They all deserve loving homes." Phoenix inclined her head, looking at the cubs in question and glad that they seemed able to play. When food was mentioned, she perked up even more. "We never say no to extra food." She purred.

The large primal would make his way into the cave along with a young pretty adol, the pair having gotten permission from their king to visit the cave. Geio would look around a moment at the cubs before nudging the adol towards the one in charge. "OH! Hi my mama came from there, I'm Moogly, after grandma." The adol was friendly with striking purple eyes. "We were wondering if we could bring these two with us to our pride."
