And as if on a trigger, a single fish egg falls through the curtain of plants, seemingly pushed from the inside. This egg does not seem to belong to the tiny fish however, and begins to slowly sink into the depths below you...

I frown in confusion, and go to scoop up the egg in my hand, but think better of it. Instead, I grab my shell from earlier, swishing my fingers apologetically at the fish still enamored with it. I carefully slide the shell under the egg, scooping it up with some water, as well as some plant detritus floating about. I cradle the shell in my hands, mesmerized by the colors dancing over the gelatinous surface of the egg, before looking back to the cave. I can't help but feel... sorrow, for the creature, for this thing that only seems to live in the shadows and cold.

Carefully transferring my shell to one hand, I pull my bag around and root through it for a second, before tossing an object into the pond, watching it roll down towards the cave entrance. It rolls for a moment before settling against the entrance, nestled in amongst the aquatic plants.

"Light, for your den." I say, with a slight nod in the creature's direction. "Carefully bottled moonlight. Soft on the eyes, soothing to the soul. If you don't wish for light, all you need do is leave it out beneath the sun for a day and it will burn away with the morning. But..." I trail off, searching for the words, though I cannot find the right ones.

But we all need light don't we? Perhaps we would all grow monstrous and cruel without it. Perhaps I do not wish to see such a thing happen.

A slow paw reaches out, you can't tell much about the creature only that it has long, gruesome claws as they glint in the light of the small bottle. Its speed seems foreign compared to the strength with which it hunted before, and carefully it drags the bottle into the den, a gentle purr rumbling within the water.

As you're looking at the scene, you fail to notice the tiny egg has hatched within the shell. Tiny, pitiful mewling comes from your hand as a wet sop of a creature sits in your palm. You can't help but notice starlight glinting in its fur...

You enter the forest with excitement, hoping to find a special creature to bring home with you. In between the trees you can spot a pond that seems to glow in the evening warmth.


However, your eyes catch a glint in the bushes beside you, and they shiver with movement before something skitters away into the woods.

I pause for a moment, looking longingly at the bush before turning back to the lake for a moment to watch all the lovely fish swim in the shallow, crystal clear water. I lap at the water with my tongue before shaking out my mane to carry on my journey in earnest. It’s a vast forest, sure I might not get a pet first try but.. there has to be something here who’s craving a friend as much as I am.

I continue on down the winding paths, my tail swishing slowly while looking all around. Listening to the beautiful nature of the forest around me.

Your paw steps crunch leaves as you journey. The trees getting thicker the deeper you venture into the forest. Darker and darker as the sun sets over the trees, covering the forest floor in a dapple of harsh shadows.

You can smell many animals among the undergrowth, but the scents are all old, the way you carry yourself must be scaring everything smaller than you away.

It’s getting later and later, and yet nothing wishes to greet me. Are they all scared? Do I truly seem so frightening? I sigh, laying down by one of the trees near the lake, gazing back into my reflection. I had been following it upstream, but nothing seemed to wish to appear.. maybe I ought to leave for now? Or try a disguise? There’s always that fluffball mask from last month…

Tiny silver fish swim though the stream, accompanied by flowing leaves and reeds. The stones on the floor of the riverbed seem to glitter and sparkle as you look into the water.

The longer you look, the longer you get lost in it. The gentle flow, the way the water swirls around itself, the glitter of the surface in the warm afternoon light. You're so focused that you don't hear the twigs snapping on the riverbed across from you, or the rustling of leaves in the thicket.
