"Can you actually hear me up here?"

That voice was something that the professional on the other side of the line was used to hearing; the one belonging to a man who was dangling above a three mile drop above a jungle canyon from a piece of ancient masonry. This prayer piller, constructed thousands of years ago by an advanced and artistic culture that sadly - and mysteriously - died out only two thousand years ago was the only thing keeping the young man alive. His grip was slipping slightly, his feet unable to find purchase on the rock that was slippery from wet grass and slick mould from years of damp, humid rainforest air.

The young man was Chad Blaise Elliot, or Blaize Elliot as he was better known around the world. The son of the legendary Theodore Elliot, whose trails lead him across the globe and discovered so many ancient secrets and treasures, and contributed so much to anthropology and archaeology that entire courses and degrees were based around his works ... Theodore Elliot was a towering force in the profession of finding things from other times.

His son?

... Not so much.

It was actually a mystery where, exactly, Blaize came from. His father never married, the man always saying 'a gentleman never leaves his lady idle in a parlour, wondering if her husband will come back from another adventure'. With his erratic and heavy workload, he found it unseemly to take a wife and leave her for long stretches of time. He had entertained beauties, but he was from the school of thought that one should only court if one had mind to marry.
So when a son turned up, everyone raised an eyebrow and no-one really wanted to ask outright where he came from. Some DID pose the polite question as to where 'your son's mother' could be, something that would always gain the frosty reply of 'she is well, but she is occupied'. It stood to reason that Blaize was some sort of one-night thing, but with whom and where, and why the normally impeccable Sir Elliot broke his moral code were all up in the air.

Not that this seemed to do much to harm Blaize, at least not in a normal way. Raised by a succession of nannies, governors and private tutors until he attended university, he was allowed reign of his fathers house while his father was off making new breakthroughs in ancient history. This made him, to put it bluntly, spoiled, and this really showed when attending higher education.

A man of means and good blood like his would do well to earn stripes in academia like his father. But whereas his father earned his credentials through hard work, good manners, excellent method and perfect intelligence, Blaize got them through ... being the son of that.
While other students burned the midnight oil, Blaize burned the oil dancing and drinking. While others religiously attended lectures, he turned up in one out of five, if at all. While others were driven to the point of near insanity from stress handing in a dozen papers or more, Blaize always had his somehow turn up, despite the man being clearly hungover and barely awake, and earn perfect marks.

Because no-one wanted to criticize the son of Theodore Elliot.

Especially when Theodore mysteriously disappeared in the heavy mists of Shonosha, disappearing in his trusty biplane into the fog and never coming back. His plane was discovered three years later, but he was gone, as was all sign of him ... Though declared dead for reasons of inheritance and law, many still wondered about his ultimate fate. Blaize was seemingly unaffected ...

Like he was unaffected now. Despite being spoilt and handled with kid-gloves by the same institutions that revered his father, he was still his father's son, and the want to climb all over things in the name of knowledge rang strong in his veins.
Even if his way was brute force compared to his father's much softer touch, and he relied much more on his learned parter, who was watching what Blaize was seeing and hearing his voice through a headset they both wore. Telephones and technology were practically useless in locations like these, but their headsets somehow still worked, and while one was hanging off the edge of certain death, the other was watching from a computer chair.

It took two hours for the camera to come back online. This wasn't THAT concerning, considering the fact that the temple was in such a poor state and Blaize had actually noticed that things were fragile. For the relief of him coming back online wasn't quite made better by the fact that the camera was staring down the pit they were there to have a look at. Large enough to have 5-10 adult men stand in squashed together, perhaps ten feet deep, it seemed to be filled with a thick, black tar and various things embedded within it.

"I think the Professors will need to buy each OTHER drinks" Blaize voice noted. The angle was odd ... he could only be that way if ...

He was. Blaize had rigged his climbing equipment to be suspended over the pit, dangling upside down by a single rope so he could see up close what was in the pit.

What was in it seemed to be a mix of stone-carved human figures AND human bones. A skull peeking out of the tar had a large chunk of bone missing from the temple, indicating this person had been killed and thrown in here.

Oliver had organized most of the artifacts they found into their crates before the monitor came back on. He tucked his pencil behind his ear before returning to his chair and see what Mr. Elliot saw. The angle was troubling but hew knew it would be pointless to complain to him so he kept his mouth shut.

He caught sight of the human remains and quickly pulled over his notebook and began to write questions. Did the other artifacts depict human sacrifice? He jotted that down and many other question just as he caught sight of a human skull fairly close to Mr. Elliot.

"Sir, can you get close to that skull? I'd like to see if its male or female," He asked through the microphone.

He slid further down the rope, reaching out and touching the skull with his free hand, before a loaded pause filled the white space of the headphones

"... Oli, I think it's a child"

That was a loaded-enough sentence, but then he managed to pull it free from the thick goop of the pit, and sighed in relief

"Oh, thank God for that ... No, I tell a lie, it's not a child. I think it's a shrunken skull"

He had at least reason to think that; the fissures in the top of the skull had started to fill in, indicating someone who was above the age of 40 and very much finished growing. However, the skull was very small, easily mistaken for a child's skull, with charring around the top of the jaw and scorch damage near the back.

"It's kind-of powdery, I don't think it will survive coming back with us" He noted, before pulling a few more things up. A model of a feather, another bone that looked like it came from a small monkey, a piece of jewellery ...
"Wait, what's this?" He slid down the rope further, just a little, and reached out for a blue object in the tar. Pulling it up with his fingertips, it appeared to be a very large gemstone, carved into a skull shape.

"Holy ... Oli, I think this is a huge sapphire or something" He held it up into the light, admiring the sculpture as it glittered and glistened in the light. This could be worth hundreds of millions, the size of it, the rarity, the sculpture ...
"It looks like a-" His voice stopped as he heard a long, low growl. Slowly, the camera panned up, and both Oliver and Blaize looked at a massive, emaciated-looking jaguar.

"... that, it looks like the skull of that" Blaize finished his sentence. Slowly, he put the skull down and let it drop back into the pit, "Nice kitty cat ... I'm just putting this back, see? Just wanted to have a look ..."

The jaguar advanced, gaping its mouth to show off its massive, dagger-like incisors. Ribs protruded from its sides, its mottled coat dull and brittle. The muzzle was heavily dusted with silver, like it had been here for some time, and the bend or broken whiskers lend credibility to that.

"You want food? Afraid I don't have any ..." Blaize watched it carefully. He was hanging upside-down over a large tar pit, and he was trying to calculate wither or not the jaguar could leap up and get him. Would it be stupid enough to try that? It would land in the pit if it wasn't careful ...
Careful is probably what the jaguar should have been; stalking across the floor, it stepped on a large tile with a pawprint etched in it and several deep scratches. Apparently, this was deliberate, as the tile sank and the jaguar stopped, staring at Blaize as a deep tumble echoed throughout the temple.

"... Oh, you bastard" Blaize scrambled back up his rope and swung over to solid ground away from the jaguar, as the temple started to shake and parts of the ceiling crashed to the floor. This was not the time to look around the temple and get some treasure, this was time to LEAVE.

"MISSION OVER!" He yelped into the microphone as he made a championship dash for the exit, dodging falling masonry and panicked bats along the way.

Oliver's stomach tightened when he learned of the skull's possible age. There was one thing that bothered him and that was dead children. He rather deal with a million dead bones of adults then those of children. Oliver wouldn't ever voice his uneasy feeling but kept the feeling to himself.

There was a loud exhale on his mic when Mr. Elliot confirmed it wasn't a child skull. The sick feeling wasn't gone right away but it wasn't threatening to make him puke.

He paused the video streaming for a moment to stare at the sapphire for a moment. It was surely a priceless gem and worth more then they could both make in years. The growl forced him to start the video streaming again in time to see the jaguar. Oliver was in no position to help Mr. Elliot but that didn't stop him from rising to his feet as he could run and save him. That deliberate step on behalf of the jaguar had Oliver wondering if that animal was trained? Had it lived for x amount of year just to press the tile? That any many other questions about the ruins themselves filled his head until the shakey image of Mr. Elliot running forced him back to the situation on hand.

"We are mostly packed, just get back and we can go home." He told him through the mic, feeling a little flushed. It wasn't likely Mr. Elliot would go to 'his' home but it sounded nice even if he kept it to himself.

"I'LL TAKE THAT INTO CONSIDERATION" Ducking and diving the falling masonry, only just managing to get out the entrance before a huge support block crashed down on the floor in his path. Sprinting through the jungle, Oliver could hear him well before he actually arrived, panting and yet with that strange elation that comes from running for ones own life.

"Well" His voice was rich with adrenaline as he sauntered into the tent, "That was a ride, could have done with more fighting, though. Contact the University and let them know we're done, should be here tomorrow if that plane they promised us is still ready to go. Drop off the treasures back at the archaeology department, then get a decent sleep before our next adventure"

Other people may want to actually, well, rest between trips, but Blaize wasn't one of them

Oliver turned his attention toward Mr. Elliot just as he sauntered into the tent. A exhale of relief escaped him as he looked him over. He didn't look injured which was nice but that didn't stop Oliver's eyes from lingering too long. He looked beautiful when he just escaped death.

"I'll call them, why don't you pack up your stuff," Oliver told him trying not to sound too bossy as he grabbed the satellite phone and dialed for an extraction. They agreed to send a small fleet of helicopters to their remote location and take them to a air strip to board a larger aircraft. Oliver hung up the phone and began his own packing, considering he didn't have much money he didn't have much to pack. The only thing he worried about was the equipment and cargo boxes.

---
The hot afternoon sun only made Oliver's mouth water and his clothing feel to tight on his skin. The university had sent a crew of men to help load up all the cargo while Oliver supervised. He could only guess where Mr. Elliot was but last time he saw him, he was talking to one of the flight attendants.

Once the cargo was loaded he boarded the plane and sat by himself with various paper work tucked into his satchel. It was nice to finally be on their way home but he also had a lot to work and began the painfully boring class of filling out paperwork for all the items they brought with them.

Blaize seemingly didn't notice the bossy tone nor the lingering eyes; his equipement was fiarly easy to pack up. Out of the two men he was the far richer one, living off his inherited wealth and the royalties that flowed in from his father's works. His 'adventures', or rather, his fieldwork was paid for by the University, and he made a handsome living working on various things in between his academic works.

Blaize had disappeared with a flight attendant prior to takeoff, and he only came back just before the plane was taxi'd onto the tiny runway to head home. One didn't really need to guess what he'd been up to, as he took his seat facing opposite Oliver in the tiny private plan, smirking with lipstick on his collar and perfume smothering his neck. Her smoothed his hair back into place, another obvious indicator

"How long until we reach the airport?" Blaize usually slept on planes, as it meant he could leap right into action upon landing.

Oliver watched as Mr. Elliot made it just in time to join him on the flight. Pushing his glass back on their rightful place on his nose, his brown eyes worked into a glare. Mr. Elliot was smug which only frustrated Oli as he took notice to the lip stick and lingering perfume. He knew which woman it was and made a mental note to ignore her for the rest of their trip.

"It should only be about eight hours, then you can finally take a shower because you reek," Oliver replied his words curt and a little angered. He hated just how easily Mr. Elliot got what he wanted from woman, when he was eager to give him the same but likely something more. That train of through was abruptly short when Oliver reminded himself that Mr. Elliot wouldn't ever see him that way, he'd just be his assistant.

Returning his attention to his paperwork he lost himself in the black letters and ignored his feelings despite the closeness of the person he had those feelings for.

"Good, I can't stand longer flights" He stretched out in his chair as the the planes engines picked up speed, and the entire craft thundered down the runway to begin takeoff.
"Although ..." He caught sight of the attendant, and his smirk deepened, "I can think of a few ways I could pass the time ..."

-

If the original tryst annoyed Oliver to passive-aggressive ignoring of the woman with whom Blaize had been intimate with, it must have deliberately stroked his patience to have his boss disappear again with the same woman into the private areas of the plane, not coming back for at least two hours. When he returned to his seat, it became clear he was finding his own entertainment on an otherwise boring flight.

That, and personal hygiene was little deterrent to anyone wanting to get close to him, especially when he could thrill them with the tales of how he ended up in such a shape.

-

Upon landing, the pair breezed through the airport, a waiting assistant taking them both back to University campus grounds as other assistants dealt with the incoming artefacts. It was never quick getting those through customs, and in the end, the University had to hire full-time workers whose sole job was to deal with the red tape and paperwork in getting them into the country.

"Mind if I crash at your place for a shower? I should see the Head before going back home" Blaize assumed there would be no problem, irregardless of Oliver's answer

Oliver had also intended to sleep on the flight, but the anger he felt for the flight attendant made it difficult. Instead he took three hours of the flight to finish paper work. Two hours to write down important stuff for his possible book. One hour reading an actual book and the last two hours pretending to read as he watched the awful flirting.

--

As they were directed into cars then to his place. Oliver felt extatic to be home and quickly opened the door and took in a deep whiff of 'home'. Ignoring the fact that Mr. Elliot was right behind him Oliver entered his small apartment and dropped his luggage near the front.

"Bathroom is down the hall first door on the right, extra towels in the small closet inside the bathroom," Oliver told his boss. He too wanted to take a shower but he figured he could at least offer him the first shower.

In order to kill time he began to declutter the couch space so that when Mr. Elliot was done he had somewhere to sit.

Blaize stretched as he entered the door, his bones cracking with his arms upraised over his head. Quite clear he needed a shower ... Normally, he travelled the absolute lightest out of the pair of them; one bag was sling around his back containing mostly climbing extras and maybe some bandages, but at least this trip had been short enough that he had the foresight to pack a change of clothing that he hadn't bothered with whilst in the jungle.

"Thanks" Not entirely ungrateful or rude, he made his way to the bathroom and disappeared inside, the scent of that odd spiced bar of soap he travelled with filling the air. when asked about it, as it appeared to be hand-made and not the kind to be purchased, he said it was his father's own blend but never elaborated. Dr. Theodore probably came up with his own recipe whilst in the deep wilds of some unknown terrain, utilising whatever was on hand and coming across something quite nice. The one time Oliver had been to the Elliot estate, he had caught a faint hint of the same scent, and it was pretty signature of the Elliots afterwards ...

He had barely enough time to put items away when a knock came on the door. A person from the University, with a very important letter ...

Oliver had just sat down when the knock forced him back to his feet and walking toward the door. As he swung the door wide open he saw a young woman who reminded him of an intern he saw often in the department building. She had short blonde hair and thick glasses and kept up with the 'nerd' outfit with a sweater vest and everything.

"Emily right? What can I do for you?" Oli asked of the girl who nodded at her name before pushing toward him a crisp letter with the seal of the Dean's office.

"Give that to Mr. Elliot and report to the Dean's office by 3pm," She dipped her head as she dismissed herself.

Oli shut the door behind her before turning around to face the living room. The seal on the letter looked broken, likely from the girls handling and it was already open so he didn't feel bad opening it the rest of the way.

His eyes scanned the document and it read.

Furthermore, we hereby offer the proposed expedition to the land of Shonosha, for the purposes of exploration and collection of any former civilization artifacts. However, as it was stressed that your involvement be paramount, we have changed the nature of the expedition to that of finding your esteemed father, Dr. Theo-

Oliver felt the color fall from his face and quickly closed the letter back up again. It was personal for Mr. Elliot and not really much of his concern at the moment. Making the letter presentable again he placed it on the side table before calling out to Mr. Elliot.

"We have a meeting with the Dean at 3pm," His attention returned to his own luggage and knew already he was going to be leaving again soon.

"Oh, fun" Blaize came out of the bathroom, a plume of spiced steam following in his wake. He hadn't ... bothered getting dressed whilst in there, instead striding out with a towel around his waist and another towel around his shoulders, one half held up as he towelled the back of his hair.

Dusky skin contrasting the crisp white cotton of the bath towel, every fit muscle (except a few) on display and ... why did this man never scar ...

He spotted the envelope on the side table, and spotted his proper name on it. Mr. Chad Blaise Elliot. Coupled with the broken seal, this had to mean it was from the University.
"Ugh, what do they want now ..." He didn't seem to mind that it was open. Then again, he went around peeking into ancient secrets, perhaps having his own looked at wasn't such a big deal to him anymore. Still towelling his hair, he read the letter. He stopped dead, read it again. He was reading it for the third time as he very slowly sat down on the cleared couch space, intense blue eyes scanning each and every single word ...

Oliver's eyes grew three times their normal size as he watched Mr. Elliot enter his living room. The left over water droplets manageed to cling to his tight body and forced a deep red blush to form on his paler cheeks.

If he was younger and less self controlled Oliver would be seeking out a pillow to cover how he felt. Instead Oliver sat further back in his chair as an attempt to hold himself back. He wanted nothing more than to trace each water droplet as it went over Mr. Elliot's body but that would be painfully unprofessional.

What brought him back to thinking proper thoughts he was the strange look on Mr. Elliot's face.

"Sir, is something wrong?" He knew that it was likely going to be something bad but he also wanted to hear just how bad from Mr. Elliot's own words and not from reading the letter himself.

"... We're not doing this" Blaize suddenly snapped back into life after staring at the letter, tearing it up in a way that made his forearms tense, almost like he was holding back from violently shredding it, "I'm not going. Fuck the Dean, fuck the University, Fuck EVERYONE"

He threw the scraps to the floor, abruptly turning and stomping back to the bathroom, slamming the door after him. Presumably to get dressed?

The letter pieces of the floor were ripped, but it was easy to put them back together. It was an official University letter, obviously, but one that was a standard 'here is your next briefing' sort of letter.

Dear Mr. Elliot,

We thank you for your recent expedition, and we thank you for your personal sacrifices in regards to the scaling of the temple and gathering of important archaeological artefacts. We are confident that our internal departments can properly catalogue and identify these artefacts, and that will bring us closer to understand the Congosia Basin and its inhabitants. We understand that you were only able to obtain video evidence of the temples inner pit, and we are excited to review this evidence.

As it is now monsoon season in the Congosia Basin and conditions are unmanageable for yourself and your team, we have decided to scale back on further fieldwork to projects closer to home. Most assignments are extremely low risk and will be for doctorate students to obtain the necessary experience for their degree. Looking at our archives, we have earmarked a few that might interest you, but most will be undertaken by lesser experienced explorers.

Furthermore, we hereby offer the proposed expedition to the land of Shonosha, for the purposes of exploration and collection of any former civilization artifacts. However, as it was stressed that your involvement be paramount, we have changed the nature of the expedition to that of finding your esteemed father, Dr. Theodore Elliot. While we understand that he has been declared legally dead for many years, and there has been a recovery of some parts of his ill-fated biplane, we are still interested in recovering his body for a complete closure of his life and to ensure that his remains are safely buried in a respectable place.

As his only child, we are entrusting yourself and your team to this delicate but noble task. Your mission is simply to find and bring home Dr. Theodore Elliot, dead or alive. We maintain a slight hope that Dr. Elliot is indeed still living, albeit unable to leave Shonosha due to the extreme boundaries of the land.

Please come to my office at 3pm, where we shall discuss this mission in greater detail.

Yours,

Dr. S. J. Wilheimsmith.

"Who the FUCK does he think he is" Blaize slammed back out of the bathroom, fully dressed and oddly furious but ... not? He sounded angry, but his expression and body language was a strange mix of upset and fear.
