"Can you actually hear me up here?"

That voice was something that the professional on the other side of the line was used to hearing; the one belonging to a man who was dangling above a three mile drop above a jungle canyon from a piece of ancient masonry. This prayer piller, constructed thousands of years ago by an advanced and artistic culture that sadly - and mysteriously - died out only two thousand years ago was the only thing keeping the young man alive. His grip was slipping slightly, his feet unable to find purchase on the rock that was slippery from wet grass and slick mould from years of damp, humid rainforest air.

The young man was Chad Blaise Elliot, or Blaize Elliot as he was better known around the world. The son of the legendary Theodore Elliot, whose trails lead him across the globe and discovered so many ancient secrets and treasures, and contributed so much to anthropology and archaeology that entire courses and degrees were based around his works ... Theodore Elliot was a towering force in the profession of finding things from other times.

His son?

... Not so much.

It was actually a mystery where, exactly, Blaize came from. His father never married, the man always saying 'a gentleman never leaves his lady idle in a parlour, wondering if her husband will come back from another adventure'. With his erratic and heavy workload, he found it unseemly to take a wife and leave her for long stretches of time. He had entertained beauties, but he was from the school of thought that one should only court if one had mind to marry.
So when a son turned up, everyone raised an eyebrow and no-one really wanted to ask outright where he came from. Some DID pose the polite question as to where 'your son's mother' could be, something that would always gain the frosty reply of 'she is well, but she is occupied'. It stood to reason that Blaize was some sort of one-night thing, but with whom and where, and why the normally impeccable Sir Elliot broke his moral code were all up in the air.

Not that this seemed to do much to harm Blaize, at least not in a normal way. Raised by a succession of nannies, governors and private tutors until he attended university, he was allowed reign of his fathers house while his father was off making new breakthroughs in ancient history. This made him, to put it bluntly, spoiled, and this really showed when attending higher education.

A man of means and good blood like his would do well to earn stripes in academia like his father. But whereas his father earned his credentials through hard work, good manners, excellent method and perfect intelligence, Blaize got them through ... being the son of that.
While other students burned the midnight oil, Blaize burned the oil dancing and drinking. While others religiously attended lectures, he turned up in one out of five, if at all. While others were driven to the point of near insanity from stress handing in a dozen papers or more, Blaize always had his somehow turn up, despite the man being clearly hungover and barely awake, and earn perfect marks.

Because no-one wanted to criticize the son of Theodore Elliot.

Especially when Theodore mysteriously disappeared in the heavy mists of Shonosha, disappearing in his trusty biplane into the fog and never coming back. His plane was discovered three years later, but he was gone, as was all sign of him ... Though declared dead for reasons of inheritance and law, many still wondered about his ultimate fate. Blaize was seemingly unaffected ...

Like he was unaffected now. Despite being spoilt and handled with kid-gloves by the same institutions that revered his father, he was still his father's son, and the want to climb all over things in the name of knowledge rang strong in his veins.
Even if his way was brute force compared to his father's much softer touch, and he relied much more on his learned parter, who was watching what Blaize was seeing and hearing his voice through a headset they both wore. Telephones and technology were practically useless in locations like these, but their headsets somehow still worked, and while one was hanging off the edge of certain death, the other was watching from a computer chair.

"If you're not happy, there's the door" Blaize pointed to the open door of the study, looking Oliver dead in the eye, "Get out if you want to map Shenosha or collect artefacts or whatever. I'm going to find my father before the vultures do. Nothing more"

His point made, and his knuckles white with suppressed and unnatural rage, he turned back to the maps themselves, writing down instructions for his pilot before a gentle ringing sound finally signified that 7 o'clock and rolled around, and it was time for dinner.
Sure enough, summoned by the chime, Mr. Foxglove appeared at the door.
"Dinner is served" His polished tones informing his master. Automatically, Blaize stood up and walked over to the butler, who allowed him to pass as he already knew his way to the dining room. The man, instead, waited to guide Oliver there.

Shock grew within the Oliver's brown eyes as he heard what Mr. Elliot said. It took every fiber within him to not throw something heavy toward his head.

The vultures probably already found him, He thought and chewed his lip in order to stop himself from utter those awful words.

Turning his attention back to his own studies he made quick work to make important notes. He copied what ever was important over to his own books. It was information he found vital. Various patterns of weather and what type of plant lived within those unexplored borders. He used this information to compile a list of supplies they would need.

The chiming of the bell had his pen falling form his hand and his eyes going upward in time to see Mr. Elliot disappear out the door without waiting for him. Half tempted not to eat dinner out of spite, Oliver un-clenched his fingers that were holding the pen a little too tight. He hadn't realized how angry he was until he forced himself to relax.

With a loud exhale he followed after Mr. Foxglove his eyes down cast and his hand flexing back and forth.

The dining room was small, perhaps surprisingly small, but really it was only meant for close dinners with friends ... and family, really, with Dr. Elliot and a young Blaize sharing their meals here. Due to the setting, the pair sat on opposite ends of the long, redwood table under pleasantly soft lighting, a member of kitchen staff bringing meals to Blaize first (as owner of the house) and then Oliver.

Fresh, garlic and dill baked salmon sat atop smooth herb-buttered mashed potatoes and steamed asparagus, softened with wild rice. It was a beautiful meal to look at, never mind taste with the Elliot silverware and a light wine poured to accompany it. Blaize himself didn't seem to look twice, shovelling the meal down as his appetite finally returned after so long in miserable depression.

"Sir, telephone call from a Mr. Cinders, he says it is most urgent" Mr. Foxglove reappeared, carrying a telephone rather absurdly upon a silver platter. Blaize immediately took the call, corralling his rice back to be scooped up by his fork.
"You got my call?" Continuing to eat as he listened to the person on the other end of the phone, his eyes looking elsewhere as he processed what he was being told, "No, not into Shenosha, landing just outside. I've got a map, I can bring it with me, what time are you flying? ... ... ... ... 6? We'll be at the airfield at 5 then, go over the map and take final stock. ... .... .... No, just two bags, that's all that's coming"

Oliver found his seat and didn't bother with looking at Mr. Elliot. He kept his eyes down and focused on putting food into his mouth and not enjoying it. He was angry with Mr. Elliot and was showing it in an almost childish way. Regardless he sipped his wine and ate his meal in silence.

His frustration didn't not deter his taste buds from realizing that the food was excellent and worth a lot more than his sour attitude. Perhaps in a different situation he wouldn't feel so inclined to be negative about it.

His attention was drawn from the food to look upward at Mr. Foxglove when the phone and platter were presented to Mr. Elliot. He tried to pay no mind to what his boss was saying until he stated that only two bags would be coming. Did Mr. Elliot really want to die out there? He surely had some kind of supply source maybe 'final stock' was in reference to that.

"I have a list of suggest supplies taken from your father's journals if you are so inclined to use them. " Oliver stated coldly, meeting the eyes of Mr. Elliot and doing his best not to yield to his stare.

Despite the eye contact, at first it looked as though Blaize was deliberately ignoring what Oliver said. But then, his frown deepened, and it was clear he was instead taking in what the 'Mr. Cinders' on the line was telling him.
"HOW many spiders ..." A raised brow, toying with the last of the mashed potato on his plate, "... well, considering the University gives me a free flight everytime, I'm not surprised it's a bit dusty. I'm not asking luxury, just that it gets in the air and doesn't try and kill me"

"... Hahaha I'm having a stitch laughing over here" A roll of the eyes, "Are you going to fly or not. ... ... ... Finally, right, see you tomorrow"

He hung up the phone, finally going back to his dinner, and casually returned Oliver's earlier statement.
"Take what you think you need"

Oliver nodded as an expression of understanding and agreement. He finished his meal promptly and sunk back into his chair, watching Mr. Elliot for a moment. He couldn't help but he drawn to the man's eyes. He only let his own eyes linger for a moment before forcing his eyes to fall down to the table.

"Excuse me, I'm going to finish my list and make arrangements for the supplies," Oliver doubted it was 'proper' just to get up and leave the table but he wasn't bound by a 'proper' upbringing to even fake it. He gave a small nod to both Mr. Elliot and Mr. Foxglove before heading out and finding his way back to the study. He didn't let himself enjoy being inside the acclaimed Dr. Elliot's anymore. He had a job and if he wanted to come home alive he had to ensure they were at least prepared.

"Sure" Was all Blaize said, the lightness in his voice making it clear this was no breach of etiquette. Then again, his mind was likely elsewhere, as it was most of the time.

He didn't join Oliver in the study. The men had radically different ways of preparing for an expedition, no matter what it was for. Oliver was methodical and well-planned. Blaize essentially went with a single backpack and maybe a spare pair of socks, nothing else. It was not exactly unreasonable to hope that Blaize would take this far more seriously and plan better.
Sort-of.
Hopefully.
At least enough to not die in five minutes.

After finishing his own dinner, Blaize wandered off close to the library, but taking a sharp right towards the gymnasium instead. The Elliots, naturally, had a gym and swimming pool as well as a climbing centre on the estate, and to go with it as well as tie into their actual careers, this room ...
Throwing open the double-doors, Blaize smirked as he looked into the extremely large storage cupboard. Inside, a treasure-trove of climbing equipment, rescue tools, grappling hooks, enough rope to tie up a titan ...
"This will be fun .. " He pulled out a bag, and started packing ...

Oliver let himself get wrapped up in reading and taking notes. The enjoyment out of reading books that were considered treasure was healthier way of him letting go of his anger. He tried his best not to dwell too much on Mr. Elliot's actions. The man might be reckless and have an unhealthy lust for danger, but he was also a man seeking answers he might be afraid to find. Pouring himself over the work Oliver let himself loose track of time.

With the list finalized he sought at Mr. Foxglove and presented the older gentlemen with the list.

"Um, if you could help me get those items that would be great," He managed to ask of the gentleman. Unsure if he was even allowed to ask the butler for help. A little uneasy he toyed with hem of his right sleeve.

"If you could show me where Mr. Elliot is I'd greatly appreciate it." He added as an almost after thought.

Mr. Foxglove looked at the list with a raised brow. Carefully, he folded it in half with his white-gloved hands, and simply answered, "Follow me"

He lead Oliver to Blaize, who was in the middle of the enlarged closet, sorting through various grappling hooks, ropes, pullies, ties ... One small, beige leather backpack sat in the middle of the floor along with several items that Blaize was apparently mulling over thoughtfully.

"A list, sir" Mr. Foxglove presented it to Blaize, who took it from him without even looking, too engrossed in this treasure-trove for climbers. He snapped out of it after a full three minutes to open up the list, and promptly looked confused
"What's this for?"

Oliver paid close attention to where he was headed in order to keep track of where things were generally. He preferred to know his away around instead of always asking for directions.

Taking to where Mr. Elliot was he wasn't surprised at the amount of gear he had. If Oliver knew anything it was that Mr. Elliot enjoyed the thrill of climbing. Personally Oliver didn't feel he had the upper body strength to do so, his stamina was great but just not his strength. Consider that Mr. Elliot was packing too much gear and not enough supplies was concerning, he hoped that list would provide helpful.

"I looked over a lot of your father's journals and made a list of important supplies he took that I feel would be useful for us,"[/b] Oliver answered diligently, trying to hide the little tenderness he still had about the subject of supplies. Mr. Elliot would be foolish to go in without nothing and for the most part Oliver didn't think him a fool.

Blaize simply looked confused at the list, as though he'd never seen one before. This ... was preposterous, of course, as the pair used to prepare lists in the past. In fact, in the beginning it was Blaize who made the list and Oliver who got the supplies, then it became a shared thing, then exclusively done by Oliver as he knew the University better and could tell the right people what to do. But now it was almost as though he had no idea what he was looking at.

"This seems a lot ..." His voice almost sounding like he was talking to himself, before seemingly realising what he was saying.
"If this is what you want to carry, fine. There's a number beside the phone in the library; call it, tell the guy on the other line what you want, tell him it's for the Elliot account, and tell him to not be a lazy ass and get the stuff here before 11pm or he's not getting paid" Handing the list back over, and pulling out a gigantic machete from a small collection of them pinned to the wall

Oliver let his face fall into a frown at the mention of it being 'alot'. He prepared a retort to insure to get approval of all his suggested items. However, when Mr. Elliot agreed he tried not to look too eager, letting his small nod and smile show his gratitude.

He didn't want to linger too long, and quickly took back the list.

"Yes Sir," He said to ensure Mr. Elliot that he understand the request and what to say to the man on the other line. However, his eyes were drawn to the large machete and felt oddly conflicted. Did they expect to go somewhere that dangerous it warranted just a weapon? Doing his best not to dwell he turned his attention back to the butler and lead the way back to library.

The number dialed and list given with the well worded threat, Oliver felt accomplished. Unsure of what to do next he found is way back to Mr. Elliot and lingerd near the door watching as the man packed.

That backpack was still sitting on the floor of the room, and Blaize was peering into it one final time, before taking everything out and checking it all again.
At least three lengths of rope. All manner of rock-climbing ... items, things like screws, hooks, grips, pullies. Blaize tried explaining what they were once, but gave up after seeing Oliver's expression. A few items of basic survive, like a small first-aid kit, a multi-use knife, that gigantic machete, a water-collection bottle, a bar of that homemade Elliot soap, fine oil in a tiny vial for repairing rough skin ... But no food, no spare clothing outside of what looked like spare socks, it looked more suited for a weekend away rather than a potentially lethal expedition.

"..." He stared at the closed pack for a few minutes, before murmering "'s fine" under his breath and standing up, appearing startled as he finally realised Oliver was behind him.

"... What?"

Oliver took note to what Mr. Elliot had packed and internally rolled his eyes and fought back the urge to do the packing himself. Instead he came closer to inspect the bag and letting his eyes slowly rise up to look at Mr. Elliot.

"Do you plan on changing ever or do you want your stink to keep the animals away?" He asked pointing to the only clothing type item he could see.

"You don't have to have an entire wardrobe but something else besides some socks would prove beneficial for you and especially for my nose. " He remarked. His own packing was done prior to returning to the estate but he would take the time to return to it and repack to ensure a better pack job, he hated lumpy backpacks.

Blaize just looked at him
"What does it matter? You keep complaining about that, and yet, it never bothers anyone else. Hell, the second we're out of whatever wilderness we walk into, you magically stop thinking I need to change every five seconds. I'm not a dog you can throw in a bath and scrub away at until I smell like baby powder. As long as the ladies don't care when I come back, neither do I"

He walked past him, thinking it the end of the matter, intent on making sure he at least had his maps
"And if you think about touching my pack to rearrange it, I'll hogtie you and carry you on the plane. And I'll put your notes in the wrong order"
