The floating isles are all the home you have ever known. It is peaceful in the sky-bound cities and life is comfortable. Or at least it was until about five years ago. That was when the rot started to form, strange cracks, like sores, bubbled up on the fringes of the outer islands, slowly eating through the stone. And then they fell. One by one, the smaller floating islands began to crumble apart and topple to the ground.

But the rot only continued to spread, eventually taking hold on Alstor, one of the six great isles and home to the greatest scientific minds the skies had to offer. They tried to stop it, tried to investigate its cause, but anything and anyone that touched the rot soon fell ill. Eventually the island began to crumble, and all of its citizens were evacuated, scattered into the remaining five great floating islands.

Since then, great strides have been made to discover the origin of the rot, and eventually it was learned that the rot was rising from far below. There, a barren wasteland called the Lower World also cracked and bled with rot, its scorched land torn apart by polluted rivers, as if by the claws of some great beast had dug deep into the world. Many were sent to investigate this long forgotten world, and very few have survived.

Desperate and on the brink of destruction, the five great isles resorted to a raffle of sorts. Any who willingly enters their name into the raffle receives monetary compensation, but those lucky, or unlucky, few whose names are chosen will be sent to the Lower World in hopes of finding a cure.

This is where your story begins.

Why you entered your name, only you know. But all that matters is that now your name has been drawn, and now you are headed to the Lower world.

++Hunting to survive: For the last four years she has supported her and her sister through hunting, fishing, and her sister gathering plants for salads and herbs for side dishes/spices. (see dislikes-senseless slaughter)

++Bow and Arrow: Weapon of choice, the bow and arrow. Artemia is extremely accurate with a bow and can shoot from trees, from moving objects, from moving objects at still and moving objects, and overall a precise shot. She will only improve more when her eyesight is enhanced by her mutation.

++Drakes: Artemia is one that loves animals of all kinds. At times when she is able to view the open skies for long periods of time, she can see Gliders, Fliers, and Goliaths floating and flying around. At times when she is in town, she can see the odd Digger or two, and a few Runners darting past the chattering citizens. She's always wanted one as a companion or friend, and considers each Drake to be extremely intelligent, never putting it past the creatures to be hiding more than they seem.

++Her sister: Artemia's sister, Muse, is a caring, obedient girl with a high intelligence level. She is the one to coax Artemia into going into town, and though she isn't allowed herself, has always hoped to go into town with her sister when Artemia let her to help her find friends or just be kinder. Wants to reintroduce Artemia back into society so she isn't miserable when they go to Arstal's busy cities.

++Water/Rivers/Waterfalls: After living on the uninhabited/less inhabited forests and open spaces of Janra all her life, Artemia has picked up on things such as which rivers lead to off-isle waterfalls, and when (I.e. when the rivers will sweep her off the isle, which rivers connect to waterfalls, which are branches that don't connect directly to the waterfall for whatever reason, frozen bends, island waterfalls, dams, etc.). She loves to swim and is a patient fisher, preferably with has curved mini-spears. (got it's own category XD)

Dislikes:
++Senseless slaughter: She is ok with hunting to eat but when people destroy populations or multitudes for fun or for extra food, she does not approve.

++Closed spaces: Growing up and living on an island without a lot of walls and boundaries and buildings, Artemia is used to hunting for her food, not being around lots of people (partially due to her reclusive tendencies and anti-social personality), and not talking to many people her own age (including no boyfriends or real friends). She's grown up in open space and very much prefers it that way.

++Industry: She does NOT like technology and prefers her bow and mini-spears to anything industrial or steam powered.

++People: Artemia is very much anti-social, and if not for her sister's urging and own draw to books, she would not go into town at all. When she was younger she had a few friends her own age or near it, but when her parents died 4 years ago (16 years old) she developed reclusive tendencies and avoided everyone but her younger sister, who she took away from the town(s) of Janra to live in the middle of nowhere, the rural and almost uninhabited areas of the island. She has been around so little people, she is nearly afraid of them. Though she knows she can hold her own in most fights, she has developed androphobia (fear of men), due to the absolute lack of them in her life. While she loved her father he had anger issues, and through some tough times in her early teens (winter mostly) the only man she had contact with weighed twice as much as she and was a good two feet taller.


Backstory:

Artemia was orphaned with her 13 year old sister when she was 16 (9 yo sister). She was the one to find her parents dead and has cared simply for her sister since, reclusively living on her instincts and parents' hunting tactics to support the two of them. She ventures into town only when absolutely necessary from her sister's coaxing. Artemia has a less-than-satisfactory education but she taught her sister everything she could from math and science to reading and writing. She's a strong reader but her writing skills are under average. Her sister was extremely talented in her studies and wanted to undertake a full education, so Artemia decided to enter the raffle as a way to pay for her sister to leave Janra and study in Arstal. She was sure she wouldn't be chosen, believing that hundreds would partake - but when a messenger waited for her to go to town, she found out that three days earlier she had been chosen.

She is unaware of why her parents suddenly died, but suspects that they were killed by infection/poison of some sort. After searching their bodies, she couldn't find anything amiss besides the looks in their eyes and their black irises. After burying their bodies she and her sister mourned them. Ever since Artemia has stopped going into town much and stuck with her sister, who she hasn't allowed into town or even very far out of her sight. Before the incident, Artemia had a few childhood friends that she hasn't spoken to in a very long time, including Obroox.

She has silky black hair that falls to her mid back and dark brown eyes. You can't see her pupils easily because they blend in with the brown or her iris, there is a ring of light brown at the edge of her iris that is contrasted greatly by the dark. She is 5'6" and despite her broad shoulders is an average, leaner build. Weighs 130 lbs. She is of healthy weight and built sturdily for a girl. Very agile and quick on her feet. She has very good predatory instincts - good for sensing things amiss, spotting weaknesses in prey and humans, and sometimes sensing presences if she concentrates enough.

Personality:
Artemia is currently a recluse. She lives in the nearly uninhabited area of Janra and hunts there to survive. Her sister, Muse, is the only person she cares about and for. She lives for her sister and will do anything she likes, even if it means moving to Arstal, the busiest and most technologically advanced island. Originally, the plan was to go to Alstor, but the next best education would be Arstal. She is the definition of androphobic and afraid of guys. In town she is able to deal with guys as long as they are a fair distance away. Due to her reclusive tendencies, staying away from town, androphobia, and lack of self-confidence, she has never had a relationship with a guy other than when she was young and had male friendships. She could be the leader sort if she weren't so suspicious of people. Does not have a drake but bonds well with animals. The past few years she has actually attempted to heal some of the sick animals - but at one point a small rodent showed up with symptoms similar to that of the recorded effects of the rot, so she has stopped healing sick animals for fear of becoming sick herself. She worries that Janra might be next to end up like Alstor.

Mutation/Power:
Her mutation is elevated senses. Her eyesight is very good but still less than that of a raptor's(hawk, falcon, etc) and her hearing is extremely powerful and picks up sounds coming from far away. Her natural instincts are even better after she gains this mutation. (This would be categorized as a mutation because the way her power works is she had individual genetic codes 'unlocked' by the rot. Thus her senses were heightened and her instincts were further improved.) Soon after reaching the rotted lower world, her ears will constantly be itchy and sore and her eyes will ache and sting. She will have to leave her eyes closed for several hours and everytime she opens them, her vision will look more and more streamline and she will be able to see further. After a night or so, her eyes will stop burning and she'll be found to have slitted eyes, like those of a cat or drake. For another half a day she will be wearing cold wet wraps over her ears, and when they are removed it will be revealed that she has grown pointed ears, elven-like but not as elongated.

The downsides in this mutation are that if very loud sounds (above 135 dB) occur and she is within a certain range (depending on how loud and how far she is) it can cause temporary deafening, or worse. Another downside is if the sun isn't blocked by clouds at all, or is close (revolution-arily speaking) to the planet, it can take her multiple minutes to an hour for her eyes to adjust. Her iris' natural color helps sometimes in this regard by soaking up some of the immediate light. However if a very bright light is shown close to her eyes, it can cause temporary blindness as well, usually lasting several hours.



Other: Has a bunny named ButtBuns; That drake is fluffy. I shall name it Fluffy. Fluffy is fluffy. Fluffy is mine. (I really don't know what that was about. I think that was in a movie about something either fluffy or squishy..i cant remember).

++Animals: Cara has always had a very special place in her heart for animals. She has always bonded easily with animals, Her birth parents knew it when they put her with the Goliath, and her adoptive parents knew it when they witnessed her interacting with animals around the farmlands, runaway horses, and only more so knew it when they gave her Saiga and she dealt with the drafts and merchandise.

++Saiga: A bit on the chipper/optimistic side of the personality spectrum, Cara loves drakes of any kind, but the Runners are her favorite. (Fun fact: she loves lizards because they 'look like runners, but mini sized!') Her partner drake, Saiga, has been her best friend for 4 years now. Saiga was given to Cara to raise from a young hatchling for the anniversary of her first year of trading. Saiga is loyal, protective, and very intelligent. She's like the border collie of Runner drakes and is stronger than your average Runner. Her favorite food is raw chicken legs. She, if anything, is very much the cautious factor involved in Cara's choices. Cara is the kind of person that gets taken advantage of, and Saiga seems to know this and look out for her.

++People: She LOVES people. Cara believes that no matter who you are, you have good in you.

++Kraen: Cara loves the island that took her in, the farming community that raised her, and her adoptive parents - two on-the-rise merchants on the east side of the island. Due to her cheerful nature, most of the people that know her on the island are worried for her when she ventures into the real world - which she has now, and look where it got her; venturing into unknown almost sure-death territory for a cure to something she is clueless about.

Dislikes:
++Rot: She cried for days over the deaths of unknown people in Alstor, and refuses to let the Rot take any of the other islands. She is vehement about finding a cure and wants to do everything and anything in her power to stop the spread. She'd like to reverse it, but is not THAT optimistic and knows that she can't fix the hearts and bodies of Alstorians that lost their families, homes, livelihoods, etc when half of Alstor fell.

++The family she never knew: The only things Cara really HATES is a downer. Someone that believes their life isn't worth anything and is ready to throw away their life for anyone. Cara hates that. And the main reason for it is because of what her biological parents did for her. She hates that they risked their lives to save their 4 year old daughter's. She doesn't remember their faces or what they were like, but she does remember a song that at least one of them would sing to her at night to keep her quiet and calm.


Backstory:
Cara was born on Nar. For four years she lived in complete poverty with her mother and a father, but she cannot remember much else about her early childhood. Cara was stowed away on a Goliath heading up to Kraen to deliver supplies and recently mined minerals. Her parents smothered coal from the mines over her body and tucked her near the head of the Goliath, knowing her close bonds with passing drakes and many animals would keep her safe under the Goliath's watchful eyes. (Idk im trying to picture the goliaths and how i see it they are friendly giants that fly slowly and completely steady XD).

She seems to get along with anyone and everyone, and after reaching Kraen was found by some people unloading the supplies while the Goliath was 'docked'. She was taken in by a sympathetic farmer that - while he felt bad - couldn't take care of her alone. She was then raised by a small local portion of the farming community and when she was 7, a merchant couple came along and decided to adopt her. They had just moved to the eastern part of the island and were still on the lower end of the trading spectrum. She went to a nice school until she was about 19, when she decided to start working with her parents' business. She was given a Runner drake hatchling for the anniversary of her first year, which they knew she'd keep close and develop a close bond with. She delivered things to customers and fellow traders on the island, often acting as a shepherd and guard for the draft drakes pulling the merchandise. She named her drake Saiga(http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/dungeonsanddragons art-source...this is how i imagine the runners are built, without the frills at the head. Maybe without the spikes too, not sure..anyway, how i imagine they are built). She joined the raffle because she wants to find a cure (see dislikes-rot). She hoped she'd be chosen, and everyone around her prayed for her safety and not being drawn. When she was drawn no one was sure how it'd end up. Many are sure she'll die out there, but she, and a few others her optimism has rubbed off on believe she might be able to at least come back alive. She, knowing that it was going to be dangerous, opted to leave Saiga behind. However, the drake, and her family, were vehement on the Runner going with her to protect her.

She has short ginger-red hair and green eyes. Her hair falls near to her shoulders but she always kept it close to her head so that she wouldn't get caught anywhere. She is 5'4" and weighs 110 lbs, being a bit underweight and leanly built. She is convenient for Saiga in this way because when she keeps herself lowered on Saiga, the Runner is more streamline and gets around faster.

Personality:
Cara loves the island that took her in, the farming community that raised her, and her adoptive parents. She's a very caring person and wants to help everybody. Due to her cheerful nature, most of the people that know her on the island are worried for her when she ventures into the real world - which she has now, and look where it got her; venturing into unknown almost sure-death territory for a cure to something she is clueless about. Cara is the kind of person that gets taken advantage of, and if it weren't for Saiga would definitely be in a lot of trouble CONSTANTLY. Cara is very gullible and tends to trust very easily. She can be involved in a direct conversation and suddenly blank out and her mind will wander. She's usually the outgoing cheerful type. Optimistic as all heck and likable if only for her cheerful and light-in-the-dark personality. While she is extremely happy-go-lucky, she is also very responsible and knows when to be serious. She is a great herder of manless drafts carting merchandise and can drive about 4 drafts at once solo.

Mutation/Power:
After contact with the rot, Cara is able to get into the minds of most species of animals. Not exactly 'get into the mind' but she seems to know what they are thinking after a few looks. When speaking to lesser-level-intelligent(not super smart) animals she seems to get feelings or one word thoughts; she cannot speak back, but can concentrate and send "picture images". These animals include most rodents, small animals, fish of most kinds, and farm-raised animals. Medium-level animals can receive and give one word thoughts and even give short sentences(Cara cannot send them sentences, however. Picture images, a few words, etc). These animals are mostly horses, dogs, cats, wolves, bears, most species of birds, (most wild animals in general), etc. High-level intelligent animals can give and receive up to short sentences. They can give longer sentences affixed with picture images to explain, feelings, and so on. These animals include all types of drakes (if there is a type you think wouldn't be this smart, or wouldn't be able to communicate with her, tell me :) Like drafts might be less smart than other drakes, or maybe Goliaths cant speak but can send pictures/words/feelings, etc), whales and dolphins (if there are oceans and such), monkeys, pigs (though they speak pig latin? XD little bit of humor), and raptors/owls of any kind.

However, there are many downsides to Cara's 'bestial telepathy'. She can get headaches, dizzy, nosebleeds, and faint depending on how long she takes communicating, how intelligent, and how much energy she has. If she is tired, she could faint after getting a simple feeling from a mouse or rabbit. If she is at full energy, she could spend probably about 10 minutes conversing with a high intelligent animal. Basically, the more intelligent the animal, the worse the headache, the longer she's unconscious, the more blood she loses. Another, less obvious downfall that she doesn't realize until later, if an animal is experiencing an extreme feeling (fear or anger) she can get a splitting headache even if she isn't connected with them. It's sort of like the animal's mind can overpower her own in that situation and cause her pain.



Other:
If the mutation/power doesn't have a severe enough downfall, i have one more idea for it just in case >:33 though it may cause some problems. Bewareeee if you dareeee~~.

Appearance:
Erin isn't what many people would consider conventionally attractive. She is incredibly thin without being athletic and has only subtle curving to her body. Considering she prefers wearing baggy clothing Erin often appears overly skinny even though it's rare to see the girl without some kind of food in hand. She has short strawberry blonde hair that ends at around her chin. When well cared for it looks quite shiny and a bit wispy, but more than often Erin can't be bothered to run a brush through it and instead her hair gains a frizzy, untamed appearance. She has fair skin with faint freckles dotting over the bridge of her nose. Her eyes are likely her most stunning feature being a lovely shade of green with a light orange-brown ring around the pupil. Her face is slightly pockmarked, the result of acne scarring that followed her from her teenage years into adulthood before managing to rid herself of it. She has a diamond shaped face with deep set eyes. She is fairly short standing at only 5'4" and weighing around 105 pounds.

Personality:
Upon first meeting Erin is incredibly shy. She has poor social skills to start with so new people usually either think she is standoffish and anti-social or strange. Once she gets to know a person her true nature shines through; loud, enthusiastic, hyperactive and potentially a bit cocky and obnoxious. She is a generally well-meaning person with a gentle demeanor and a kind heart, but she is also easily excitable and a bit impulsive. Erin grows attached to people easily, becoming fiercely protective of them. She's the sort of person you could shove into a locker and she'd just quietly accept it, but if you shoved a friend into a locker you best be preparing for a booty kicking. She generally considers herself entirely untalented and has begun to panic a bit as she is already a young adult and still isn't sure what she wants to do with her life.

Likes:
Books/Reading - It was the one hobby she could afford to have growing up. She will read any book regardless of topic.

Writing - Erin enjoys creating fictional stories involving fantasy themes, animals and mythological beasts. She also keeps a journal and writes down important events in her life so she'll always remember them. She is self-conscious about her writing and never shares it with anyone.

Rocks - She just really loves rocks ok. She has a huge collection and even the plainest, grayish stone you've ever seen will be subtly slipped into her pocket to be added to it later. Don't judge her. She knows what she's doing.

Animals - All living creatures fascinate her and she's done a good deal of studying most currently known animal/plant species. She also has like a thousand cats, often caring for strays around her home. She really likes bunnies too!

Food. All food. Every food.

Dislikes:
Make-Up - Her mother made her wear it throughout most of her teenage years due to how awful her acne was. She has nothing against anyone who does like it, but she's had enough of the stuff even if she is embarrassed about her scars. Since she's over 18 mom can no longer dictate what she wears and she's taken full advantage of that.

Arrogance - She's not a fan of conceited, egotistical people who think they always know best.

Dishonesty - If she has one talent it's spotting a liar. She'll be sure to let you know it too. Erin is a warm, giving person, but she is not easily swayed or manipulated.

Backstory:
Erin grew up in Kraen's only city where her mother worked as a merchant. It was only the two of them and for most of her life they fluctuated between being lower to middle class. She did have two uncles, her mother's brothers, who often visited them and would bring her gifts. One uncle would bring books while the other always gifted her with seashells and brightly colored stones. She adored both. She was given a tiny Runner type Drake for her 16th birthday and the little reptile is her closest companion, given the most glorious name of Zoom for his speedy tendencies.

Despite not being the richest family they always had food and Erin is almost constantly eating. She decided to sign up for the raffle behind her mother's back in a desperate attempt to gain her family some financial security as her mother's business was failing and one of her uncles was crippled on the job when a building collapsed on top of him (he's a construction worker). She is terrified of entering the Lower World, but also insanely curious and determined not to let her family down.

Mutation/Power:
Oneiric Physiology - The power to possess the form of an inhabitant of the dream realm. Users with this ability either are or can transform into a creature that is comprised of thoughts and dreams. The most prominent species of the dreaming world are called the Oneiroi, which in Greek mythology are a kind of humanoid with wings on the sides of their heads or backs.

Basically while asleep she can take on the form of a Greek deity and travel through other people's dreams. Her appearance is mostly the same save for being dressed in an orange robe with golden lining and long orange-brown wings with rather sharp looking feathers protruding from between her shoulder blades along with a smaller set on the sides of her head just above the ears. She in turn can take on other forms depending on her purpose for visiting someone's dream. If she wishes to aide them she can appear either as her human or Oneiroi self. If she wishes to cause a nightmare she'll transform into a hideous beast that appears to be a cross between a wolf and a wild boar with huge black wings sprouting from her back, then proceeding to chase and hunt the sleeping person's dream self down. She cannot actually harm anyone through dreams.

Her Oneiroi forms can be achieved while awake, but only under circumstances of extreme stress and the energy it takes to maintain them for longer than a few minutes would likely be life-threatening. Another consequence of this power is if she spends too much time outside of her own mind dabbling in other's dreams not only is her body left unconscious and therefore vulnerable until she returns to it, she can also become lost and therefore separated from her body forever.

Draven is a biracial man of mixed European and Filipino heritage (though this is a fictional world so I'm not sure that matters). He is about 5'11 and weighs 189 pounds. Draven has thick, slightly curled black hair and brown eyes with an olive skin tone and light dusting of freckles. He has a lean, but muscular build and keeps in shape.

Personality:

Draven is a volatile and dangerous individual, in many ways a product of Riter's brutal streets. While generally calm and frivolous in nature he can become violent in the blink of an eye and appears to care very little for the opinion or feelings of most. He is highly argumentative and confrontational, seeming to consider his way the only way. Draven enjoys using intimidation to get other people to agree with him and is not above resorting to vicious tactics in order to convince them further. Those who manage to gain his friendship will find him more amiable and willing to compromise, but it's not an easy feat to wiggle your way into his inner circle. He is well known on his home isle for his ruthless ways and while he has limits Draven is willing to go to extremes in order to punish someone if he feels they deserve it. He started out as a young man with good intentions, but the darkness of the city poisoned him as it has many others. It's possible with the right guidance he can take a turn for the better, but as is he's more than a handful and most people tend to steer clear.

Likes:
Honesty - He abhors liars and excuses. More likely to respect a person for owning up to their mistakes rather than trying to hide them.

Fire - Even before entering the Lower World and gaining his mutation he was unnaturally drawn to it.

Coffee - The fuel of champions.

Swords/Knives - He always keeps one on his person at all times, but he also collects them for decorative purposes.

Dislikes:
Rain. Water in general really unless it's for drinking or bathing. Must be shallow if the latter.

Cowards.

Cops. Fuk da police.

Backstory:
Draven grew up in a poverty stricken family, his parents struggling though his entire childhood just to feed him and his two younger sisters. His father died when he was twelve, cause of death being a mix of overworking himself and malnutrition since all food went to his wife and children, rarely eating himself. The family and many others in similar situations were also often tormented by gangs who prowled the streets day and night, his mother and sisters constantly harassed and fearful for their well-being. When he turned sixteen Draven started a gang of his own with a few other teens from at risk families. Their intention was to keep the streets safe and protect their families, but this eventually evolved into something far more sinister.

They drove competing gangs out of town or else murdered them if they put up a fight. Soon protection came with a cost and while the gang never harmed any of the poor they moved into more neighborhoods, spreading like a plague and businesses literally paid them to keep away from their stores and homes. They were prone to vigilante justice, taking matters into their own hands whether the authorities failed to handle a situation or not. They ruled their territory through fear and savagery until no one dared step a foot out of line. Of course, by then, they had become the criminals without even realizing it.

Though he isn't in dire need of money any longer he entered the raffle anyway for the extra cash, never expecting he would actually be chosen.

Mutation/Power:
Solar Manipulation - The ability to absorb solar energy into the body. This energy can then be shaped and used to create light and heat as well as potentially more deadly occurrences such as super solar flares and geomagnetic storms when properly harnessed. Can also totally set himself on fire without being burned to a crisp and help plants grow with just a simple touch.

His power comes from the sun. Without it he has nothing. Is also at risk of overheating and killing himself if he goes too crazy with the whole fire thing. I could actually use some help with weaknesses here if you have any suggestions.

Isle of Origin: Born on Alstor; currently residing on Arstal.
Age: 24.
Gender: Male.
Appearance: Possessing more of a rugged don't-mess-with-me look, Xander definitely can make a first impression, sporting medium-length and slightly wavy messy brown hair, shaven-every-day-or-so facial hair, and a flashy smile. Although he's outside a lot, his skin isn't overly tan. It tends to be an average tone, not too pale but not like he spends every day in the sun. His eyes are a dark brown, flashing hints of hazel here and there. He stands at 6'1" with a fairly lean but muscular build throughout his body and a solid core.

His clothing varies from day to day and with the weather, but he tends to wear long sleeves and generic pants to be prepared for whatever the world will have for today. They're just simple clothes, certainly nothing to cry over if they get ruined, however still viable and lightly armored should he find himself in a bit of a situation or decide himself on the fly to get into something. When actually doing his line of work, he wears lightly armored but stealthy clothing, seeing as the average civilian usually doesn't carry a weapon on them. Should he run into any police, the clothing won't drag him down if he runs but would protect him enough if a fight broke out.
Personality: The best thing said about Xander by the people are know him is that he's a bit showy. The worst thing said is that he's an arrogant asshole. Both are true, in a way. He can be incredibly prideful about his work, even though that isn't necessarily a thing people are proud about. He loves the attention that it brings him around other hired thieves, assassins, and gang members, not to mention the reputation he's gained, but is afraid that the image he's built in that community will start to leak into his normal life.

That aside, he is very friendly around those he likes. He certainly isn't shy, although does tend to be quiet. From his lifestyle, he is very tactical, and always observing a person to figure out what he can about them before engaging in any sort of conflict. "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer" he pretty much lives by. He does know how to get around the law, both through loopholes and through blood. Once someone has shown him true loyalty, he's willing to put his life up for them.

Overall, he's a nice guy to get to know. While he does have a bit of a jealous side at times, he longs to find someone who won't run away because of his backstory, or more specifically, because of the rot. He's been on his own since his mother fell in the collapse of Alstor, he just wants a friend who wouldn't stab him in the back for a quick coin. He's a hopeless flirt though, so if it's a girl, they would have to be someone who would be able to ignore him and get down to whatever business it is.
Likes: Growing up with a mother who was a scientist, he has a natural curiosity and knowledge-lust for how things work. He takes an interest in her line of work, however never went to school for it or has any knowledge of exactly what she did that could help him get a job like her's.

Xander loves sports, anything from a friendly little drake racing competition to the normal soccer game.

He likes guns, specifically pistols. He carries one with him wherever he goes, along with a few small knives incase he's out of ammo. While he prefers not to use the weapon, he has it with him just in case. (I don't know how common guns are but I'm guessing there are a few around given this is sort of industrial revolution times. I can change it though if you want ^^)

Petrichor, the smell after it's just rained. The smell reminds him of jumping in the puddles outside the lab with his mom when he was a little kid.
Dislikes: The police, an obvious one in his work. He doesn't exactly dislike them, just when they get in his way or try to arrest him. The rest of the time he recognizes the hard work they do and respects them.

He dislikes dishonesty, even though that makes him sort of a hypocrite.

He is very impatient, especially when those who hire him don't get straight to the point. If they talk on and give him a backstory as to exactly why he must steal this specific item of high value, he tends to zone out.

Anything that isn't up to his class of living. He's never really experienced a truly poor lifestyle, and now that he's made bank with this work, he's made his living as care-free elegant as he can. After all, Arstal is the jewel of the skies.
Backstory: Growing up as a child on Alstor, Xander's life couldn't have been better. His mother took a job in the labs there, and while fairly new to the job, their family thrived. She raised Xander on her own after her husband died traveling from isle to isle. It was a horrible incident, but one that couldn't have been prevented when the drake tore its wing mid-flight on the cliff if took off from. Although having very little memory of his father, Xander grew up the energetic little boy he always was. His life was normal, and at the age of 16 got an internship at the lab his mom worked for. He didn't do much aside from running messages or samples to and fro, and certainly didn't touch anything actually in the labs, but was paid enough for his labor that he could say he helped his mother put bread on the table.

About a month after his 19th birthday was when the isle started to collapse. He doesn't remember anything aside from chaos, panic, and screaming, but that was all that was happening. It was madness; the rot couldn't take over Alstor. Sure, the smaller, less important isles could be contaminated, but it seemed impossible for it to reach the scientific mind of the floating isles. But it did, and all that followed was chaos. The scientists tried desperately to save their work, and while some prevailed, most were lost in the collapse. Xander and his mother tried to make it out with their lives, and while he managed to mount his drake in time, the ground fell from below his mother and her drake's feet. He saw her fall, but his drake took flight before he could even think. By then, she and her beast were far bellow, out of sight.

With all their money and possessions left on the rotten isle, Xander made his way to Arstal, hoping one of his relatives might be able to provide aid. But they had families of their own, and barely enough money to get by with themselves. He found residence at his great aunt's, who had little to provide, but was unwilling to let him live on the streets. With no real job experience aside from working in his mother's lab, Xander searched for any job that would take him. Working in warehouses, cooking food, even resorting to dog walking or drake exercising, but none lasted very long. Eventually, feeling terrible seeing his aunt working overtime to feed both of them, he turned to the side of Arstal most don't talk about. Thievery, but not the common, smog-ridden thievery seen in Riter. He took on jobs from whoever would hire him, stealing whatever they wanted for a hefty price. Of course, it took a couple tries for him to get good at the line of work, and spent a few nights in jail maybe once or twice. But having been working the jobs for years now, Xander is quite proud of the reputation he's earned among the crowd. Occasionally, he'll pull of a heist with a friend or two if the pay is good enough, but often prefers to work alone and for higher prices. Once having established himself about a year or or after living in Arstal, he paid his great aunt back in full for everything she'd done, and made sure she had enough to never need to work overtime again.

Now, he lives in his own condo in a nice neighborhood straight in the center of Arstal. It's a nice setup, however upon hearing the news of the raffle, Xander decided to cast his name into the ballots. If he didn't win, which was likely, he would get money which he'd probably give to his great aunt as another thank you. And if he did win, he didn't have much to lose. He had barely any family that cared save his great aunt, most of his friends would likely turn him in if the reward was great enough, and he had no wife or girlfriend. Besides, the subject of the rot interested him. It was unlikely, hell, very unlikely, but maybe his mother was able to catch onto her drake as they fell. If she were alive down in that wasteland, he would find her, or anyone else from his home isle who did manage to survive the fall.
Mutation/Power: While he doesn't fully know it yet, the rot from his home isle allows him to voluntarily wipe others memories of him. This happens subconsciously, for now. If he's working a job and is caught, the fear of being caught stimulates the power and he is able to escape unseen and unheard of. It's why he's been able to make such a living with thievery, although he thinks that he's just that good. However, he has no control over the power as of now. There's a reason why some of his relatives or friends don't recognize him or refuse to acknowledge him. The effect of the missing memories on others seems to be like a blank dream; they know something happened, and they know what the effect is, but they can't exactly recall what it was that happened or anyone related to the activity.
Other: His drake, a glider, is really the only one that he truly trusts aside from his great aunt. He likes to keep her identity a secret, just in case anyone should stab him in the back and go after his family members. & bunny ^^

Isle of Origin: Nar.
Age: 21.
Gender: Female.
Appearance: Elle is rather average height, not too tall but not too short either, standing at 5'5''. From lifting saddles for drakes (I'm assuming they have saddles but if not lmk and i'll change it o:)and working in the mines with her father, she has a bit of a more muscular build in her arms and legs than most girls her age. As she mainly works in the mineshafts, she doesn't get much sun, resulting in her skin being slightly on the paler side. It never tans nor freckles; just burns if she forgets to put on sunscreen. Her face and arms are dusted in copper freckles that would burn from less than a minute of working in the hot sun. In comparison to her pale freckled skin, her hair is a wild strawberry blonde, almost red but still light enough to be considered blonde. Some days she likes to say she's ginger and some she says she's blonde, because the hair can't seem to make up its mind. Although she would love to have long hair, when it gets too long it is hard to fit in her helmet while she's working, so she keeps it rather short. It falls just past her shoulderblades, although whenever she's on vacation she likes to let it grow out. While she pictures most red-heads with blue or green eyes, she has dark, black-coffee brown eyes that she hates.

When dressing casually, Elle likes to dress for herself in comfortable clothing. Mainly jeans and sweats in the winter, and shorts in the summer with the matching, loose shirt; nothing that is too hard to move in because even when she's not working, she likes to be active. When working in the mines, the first thing she grabs is her protective helmet, followed by the thick pants and long-sleeved shirt that would protect her from nearly any rockfall or scrape. When it's cold, and it's almost always cold down in the mines, she wears a long coat over the shirt. Most of her wardrobe is grey, brown, black, or neutral colored since it'll most likely just get dirty anyway.
Personality: Elle isn't one to be rude in any way -- on purpose, that is. She tends to say things without really thinking it fully through, which may be hurtful in some way or another. Of course, once realizing her mistake, she apologizes ten thousand times, never feeling like she's fully forgiven. Mostly, she says what is on her mind without realizing it until it's out of her mouth and is brutally honest. Despite this, she is one of the sweetest people you could meet. She tries to not say something that could invoke an argument or hurt someone's feelings, if she catches it before it comes out of her mouth, that is. If she does have something rude to say, she tries her best to keep it inside and not say anything about it. Even when arguing with someone else, she says the word 'sorry' a lot, more than she should. She's apologizing for everything, even if it's the other person's fault. She is very booksmart and intelligent when it comes to school, her work, or anything that includes memorizing something. However, growing up in a good area of town, she isn't very familiar with much streetsmarts. While she knows not to talk to strangers and stay away from pervert-types, she likes to think that there's good in everyone. A lot of time, she can bring out the good in someone even if they don't like it.

Working in the mines has toughened her a bit. Despite her apologetic nature, she is able to withstand usually anything that's said toward her. She's a lot like the element: hard and unmoving, whether it comes to an argument, insults, or just an idea she's set her mind to. She truly loves working in the mines with her father, even if it's against her mother's wishes. Although she knows how a woman's supposed to act, she refuses to conform herself to society's standards. She'll always be rebellious to that fact, and one day pictures herself head of the most successful mining company of all the isles.
Likes: She loves her home isle, Nar. She loves the aesthetics of it, the community, the mining aspect. Even if it isn't necessarily a proud isle to be from, she's insanely proud of her heritage.

Drakes, specifically drafts and goliaths. While drafts are most common, and her father's company owns plenty, she's always had a soft spot for the huge goliath he also owns to carry minerals and gems to Arstal to sell. She wishes badly that she could have taken him with her instead of one of their drafts.

Anything that's out of the typical "girl" image. Rocks and dirt? Hell yeah. Fighting? Why not.

Anything having to deal with mining, whether it's the actual mining itself, shifting the minerals from the dirt, polishing gemstones, or selling the stuff in Arstal.
Dislikes: Over-fanciful stuff. Sure, it's nice to have, but Elle really has never been into anything too upper-class.

Rain. When the water gets into the mineshafts, it makes working really dangerous and they have to call it quits for the day. Not to mention, it can ruin their progress.

Somewhat ironic, Elle is a bit claustrophobic if she's entirely alone in a small space. As long as she's with someone, though, she tends to get over her fear.
Backstory: Living her entire life on Nar, Elle's grown quite accustomed to the culture of the isle. As a child, she made her way through the small markets of the poverty-stricken town and bought what little candy she could with the small money her parents gave her. Her family wasn't exactly poor, but they were far from being rich, or even close enough to call it a 'stable' financial life. Their little mining business had always been small, but over the years her father had built it up from nothing. Once she was old enough to realize the vastness of the world, and that there were isles other than Nar, they had made enough profit to visit the capital isle of Arstal to sell their product. Elle accompanied her father on almost every trip, and by the age of 16, became quite skilled at negotiating, even sometimes did it in her father's place when he couldn't make it.

It was there that she met her first love, a boy with rich parents who bought her father's products. It was the first time ever that she'd caught herself falling for the cliche and girly tactics when one was in love. The relationship didn't last very long, however, as their parents got into a fiery dispute between the price for her father's diamonds. After visiting him nearly every other day, Elle confined herself to her home isle and turned back to her and her father's business. She's had few relationships since then, but none that lasted very long.

As the rotting began to take place, her father quickly amped production rates, fearful that their isle would be the next to fall and they would lose all source of income. Of course, the increased production brought plenty of new minerals and stones to be sold, but they were still at a close end to their money. Refusing to see their business collapse, Elle entered her name into the raffle, never suspecting that she would have been chosen.
