@Miso, I have a feeling I know where this is going and yes. I use a crop and spurs and I have all my life. I now the reaponsibility and I know when and when not to use them. I prefer a crop over spurs, simple because a crop has less potential to hurt your horse. I only use spurs on lazy horses that need a little reminder now and then. And I respect those people who refuse to use them. I have considered dropping crops and spurs but it will be a quiet difficult transition because of my trainer.

That's not what I was gonna ask but alright. I personally have no problem with crops and spurs as long as you don't need on them. If you have a disrespectful horse or a horse who is disobedient. I just have the problem with people using them excessively or use them to much on a sane horse who does not entirely need it. Talking about spurs not crops. Crops are fairly useful under right circumstances.

My question is what kinda bit or if you don't use bits. I have only used a simple snaffle when I ride. But I know some people prefer hackamore but what do you guys think? Pros, Cons? Thoughts? Is one better depending on the discipline? Is there something completely different you use?

I just use a simple D ring snaffle, that is, if I even use I bridle. I normally ride bareback with clip on reins except for lessons and show

Also do you guys have any advice for a person wanting to start English? I'm a-okay beginner rider, although I have never tried English only ever ridden western. I'm looking into lessons possibly in the summer after I have raised some money, but just asking for a little advice on what to do / what to look for things like that.

@Miso, I've never ridden western so I can't really compare them but I'm sure they have a similar basis, heels down. Head up etc. But I guess it depends how much you already know and what you want to do in elgnish

Western is my main, though I don't compete for money simply for fun so. I ride the way I feel comfortable
Most the time I ride with just a rope around the base of my horse's neck/chest, as my horse is used to reining with leg pressure. No saddle or bridle.
No bits, spurs, or crops for me!

I don't use spurs.. Actually, Jack doesn't seem to mind his bit, because he takes it without second thought. He likes to work, but he has decided tacking up takes too long and will pace back and forth when bored..

Do you own/work with any horses?: I don't own any, though I've always dreamed of it. I ride three to five times a week at two different barns, and volunteer helping with lessons and training as often as I can. I've been riding English since I was six, and I tried Western once just for fun but didn't like it as much.

Have you always admired horses?: All my birthday presents as a kid were always horse books!

Do you own/work with any horses: Yes, I have a mare named Mietta, Mimi for short. She's a TB/Clyde cross (basically an American Warmblood, lol) but I also work with many of the horses at the barn if needed, doing whatever I am tasked to do. I also work there frequently.

Other Pets: A yellow lab/whippet mix named Tasha, and 8 hermit crabs because I am a crab nerd (yes they all have names, and there's two different species xD).
