Genetics? Cast your vote!

We have been reading amazing suggestions on genetic models for Lioden. We do agree users have amazing ideas and we'd like to see what other players think about the ones we picked. We only want your opinions for now, okay? There is no guarantee we'll make any changes to genetics at all as it stands, so we're just taking opinions and ideas for now.
We'd like to point out that the random outcomes for genetics are still needed, because you guys are lions, not humans that are breeding lions. You are not able to test specific genetics in a lab, and getting the always same path to get a specific result would be boring as well. We want to make it exciting still, and we believe those suggestions would be good with or without tweaking by our coders:

Alma's big genetic model - complete revamp of our whole system. I personally love it so I really want to see player's opinions on there!
Kamau's Deadly genetics - this afaik keeps current model of passing bases and markings, but adds more variety to it.
Raksha's special breeding outcomes - same on current genetics, but adds new outcomes that can happen only via specific marking and base breeding crosses.

If you feel like you always wanted to make a big genetic model, now it's your chance. We will repeat the lists with new additions in news post for 2-3 weeks and then pull it down to talk things out.

Those eyes are beautiful~! Nny must now get both someday. x.x

Andd Alma's genetics thing has been a favorite of mine for a long time. I love trying to figure out genetics on games and hers always seemed like a good balance between people who do like genetics and people who don't want to have to look up a lot on genetics when breeding. ^^

In addition, I LOVE the idea of bad genes too and frankly would love to see something like it added. However, I can also see a bunch of people hating the idea. Buttt I think it'd be a really nice addition so long as it wasn't overly complicated and such~ :3

I may be the only one who likes all 3.

I like the first for the color scale. It makes sense. It would be interesting to have dominate colors, but that may be taking it a bit too far.

The second I think would also be a great thing to add in. Example merles in dogs. Breeding to merles you get all sorts of messed up pups.

and the third I feel like ties in with the first anyway just on a markings standpoint vs base color. It's doing the same thing. If you are going to have a color scale system for bases shouldn't it also work for markings? Maybe not "special" but say I breed a onyx panther to a Dark brown panther.. the cubs could have onyx, dark brown, or black. But I think that would ONLY work if the markings are on the same slot.

My favorite genetics model is Alma's, but I'd also love if Raksha's idea could be worked into that as well.

I'm feeling rather ambivalent towards Kamau's suggestion of lethal combinations. I mean, I guess it would be more realistic for some cubs to die as a result of certain color combinations, but not just for any coat, only a few. It's not like with dogs or horses there are a lot of coat colors that often result in dead offspring when they're homozygous. That's a pretty rare thing. I don't know much about horses, but for dogs it's mostly linked to a large amount of white (like dalmatians and white boxers), and even in the case of merles which are a little different, double merles are mostly white. On LD though base color and marking colors are completely independent of each other, so it wouldn't really work the same as real life.

On top of that, I'd say at least with the merle example, the results would possibly be more like LD's mutations than just something born dead. Double merles aren't just born mostly white and dead. Some survive, and they can also (but not always) end up with all sorts of horrible defects like having no eyes (in fact, the eyes are quite likely to be messed up in some way with double merles who manage to survive). Deafness is also common for survivors (it's also very common in dalmatians, which is probably also linked to their mostly white coat, and in white cats, especially white cats with blue eyes).

If you're going to go the mutation route, I don't know how that would work since double merles can be both eyeless and deaf (and have other problems), whereas on LD they can only have one mutation per lion unless you made specific marking related mutations where the eyelessness/eye damage and deafness were combined. Come to think of it, starburst pupils would be pretty damn cool looking. xD Not exactly a good thing, but like the blind mutation aesthetically pleasing.

I'd also like to address the Scottish fold example. I don't think it's a good example for LD coat colors at all, because ALL Scottish folds with folded ears have osteochondrodysplasia. Every single one of them. That's what causes the ears to fold like that. It's a mutation, not a coat color. Homozygous folds don't necessarily die as kittens or anything like that either; the rate of progression and severity of the osteochondrodysplasia is just much faster, which is why they're often put down.

TL;DR: LD's coat/marking colors and the way mutations work aren't compatible with real life genetics, so I can't see Kamau's idea working well.

Well any of the funky structure cats cannot be bred back to another funky structure cat without the possibility of having issues.

You should breed a short leg munchkin to a normal legged munchkin.
You should breed a tailless manx to a tailed manx.
You should breed a folded scottish fold to a perked ear scottish fold.
You should breed a curled american curl to a non curled american curl.

I don't know the exact details of what happens since I only had Munchkins when I was a little fart, but from what I heard it was not good. And any good breeder will tell you the same thing. SO maybe if you breed two of the same mutes together you have a possible chance of stillborns or lethal mutations? With markings how would you decide what would be a lethal marking since we don't have merle (just using that as an example). I still like the idea of it, but the more I think about it the more I think we may be too far gone to go that route. I have my own theories of trouble prone colors, IRL, but they isn't for certain so eh. But at the same time... they games doesn't have to be 100% realistic considering the majority of our lions are not realistic.

The only time that doesn't work is with coat mutations. Your rexes, hairless, semi hairless (Lykoi). You actually NEED to breed both mutations together in order to get a mutated kitten, aka, the gene is recessive. Again, not entirely sure they really want to go that route with dominate and recessive genes, but it would be interesting, but probably confuse and tick a lot of people off too.

Sorry if I rambled or made no sense... I am very tired.
