When you search an area you have a chance to find either a rat or an item to use on your rat or in breeding based on the percentaged listed.

To search you need a rat. You can buy a common starter rat for 50SB, and you get to pick the gender.

Once you have another rat, you can choose to have this one be your main rat. Their personality may come into play while exploring.
