So...the July Event

Please read before commenting!
--------------------
I am AWARE that the "full version" of the event is not available and it will not be until next year. I am AWARE that the admin and art teams put in a lot of work for this event. I am very thankful for them. Xylax, Deertush, 7th, you guys are amazing and I love you. This thread is in no way meant to downplay your skills or capabilities, because your art is fantastic and i and everyone else appreciate everything you do for us to keep the game fresh and beautiful. This thread is being posted because I would like to hear suggestions and input from the rest of the community, because i am aware that myself and most of my friends very much dislike what has happened to the July event in terms of the rehaul.

The Mechanics
--------------------

I'm not even sure where to begin with this.

Event Currency is Participation Currency.

Asking the community to pay a tax from their currency in order to participate is, quite frankly, a little bit outrageous. It would be like having to pay stink bugs in order to leave poop in other people's dens. It would be like having to use Khepri beetles in order to fight with your deity, How is anybody supposed to save for items for the event shop with this model?

Battling Sucks.

There's not much I can say other than this. Battling NPCs is a mechanic that not many people on Lioden like to do, but now the only way to get major event currency is to fight for it on a RNG based system that you have to...pay in order to access. With enemies that don't seem to be scaled correctly at all. It isn't even a "you lose so you lost energy try again later" situation. You're physically paying event currency to have your ass beaten by space dragons. And don't even get me started on the bosses, please. How am I supposed to beat a boss when random NPCs are killing me in three hits?

What the fuck is going on?

There's just so much I want to say but I don't know how to put it into words.
It feels like there's been little to no communication from the staff team and it frustrates me because of how much I love this game and how much I loved this event.
This isn't Wolvden, but it sure feels like Wolvden is starting to bleed in over here. July really right now feels like a glorified Lunar event, and I don't like that that's been done.
When the delay news was posted, that was just fine! Like I said, I love this art team, But... this isn't what was expected. I was expecting a delay for the entire event to be posted. This wasn't communicated at all and now people are confused on all fronts, from currency to what's going on to everything else.
I really, genuinely think most people were expecting different storylines from different perspectives from the characters we've been fawning over for years, with Tefnut up first. This isn't what anybody wanted.

On the Topic of Characters
--------------------

I don't even understand why anyone thought tossing all of the July NPCs out would be a good idea or where it came from. Nobody in the community asked for this. There was so much that could have been done, that I think most people expected. When Tefnut's backstory was teased, everyone was so excited! I was super excited to learn about the celestial world of the lions we loved. We watched Menhit grow up! She's my favorite NPC in the entirety of Lioden and now she's just... gone? So i can fight some random space dragons? I'm just...confused. Like why should i...care? Where is Tefnut's backstory? Apollyon's? Apedemak's? Obviously there was more to learn about him, since one of the explore encounters talked about how he was some crazy guy talking to the sky which implies our character has no fucking idea who Apedemak is from the jump.

In short, I basically agree with everything already said in the thread.
The new event is confusing, especially without an actual storyline or much in the way of explanation of the lore, which isn't helped by how alien the space setting is.
Having another battle-centered event where you have to fight enemies all the time right after the already battle-based event in June was also a rather poor choice. I'm already so drained from doing nothing but fighting snakes for a month, so having to spend another month doing nothing but fighting space dragons wasn't exactly what I had anticipated.
And then there's the problem with the event currency and the constant hardcore grinding and fighting you have to do in order to get enough of it to afford to buy anything while still being able to paricipate in the raffles. If they add the apps back in AC pricing, which I still think would be the better option compared to SB or MS, that'll make things even harder.
It's just a lack of balance with both of these issues I feel like, which I think can be tweaked and improved in the future with more non-battle encounters that reward AC and perhaps introducing a storyline and questing that will award players with more AC as well, but for now, it's just a bit of a mess.

With the space dragons, I see what they're going for. We're exploring the Draco constellation, "draco" being Latin for "dragon" or "serpent", so it makes sense. I'm pretty sure that in coming years, they'll add more constellations to the map, and each zone will have enemies based on that specific constellation.
For example, consider how in the Demiurge quest the enemies were all crustaceans because they came from the Cancer constellation, with "cancer" meaning "crab". I think that's basically what they're going for.
So I don't think the event will remain centered around space dragons exclusively. They really could make that a whole lot clearer though if that is what they're going for.
Overall, I think this could be a really cool concept, but I really, really hope we'll be getting an actual storyline of some sort because without that it doesn't make a whole lot of sense and makes it feel very disconnected from the rest of the game. I'm also not really a fan of how non of the event stuff, except for MS drops and the Interstellar app, show up in the regular explore. It just makes things even more jarring somehow, idk.

With that said, I really wish they wouldn't completely drop the original characters and storyline, even if they don't want to keep them as the focus of the event. Other users before me have already suggested some great ways to change the story, and I think they could have kept much of the story intact by just changing some of the needlessly dark and upsetting elements.
But ok, here's what I'm personally thinking. If they wanted an entirely new story, and wanted to add more fantastical elements and the celestial exploration element, I really don't see why they couldn't have created a story where your lion travels to the celestial realms Apademak and Menhit came from.
You could have the Demiurge create a portal to that world, perhaps, maybe asking you to help them with some sort of conflict or crisis. They could still keep the old characters, either as the main NPC's or as minor/side characters, while still introducing new art, new storylines, new lore and new game mechanics like the Celestial Explore.
I think this would have been a fair compromise, and a way to make the event feel more grounded in pre-existing lore.

I do understand that the staff has worked really hard on this new event, and it's such a shame things have turned out the way they have. I do appreciate all of the stunning art the artists have created for this event, and a lot of the new decor in the shop is really gorgeous (the nebula cloud and star cluster/sparkles decors in particular are so beautiful!).
Also, as I stated previously, I do see where they're going with the Celestial Explore function, and I do think the idea of exploring various constellations is a promising idea, it just needs some fine-tuning and a compelling story to tie it all together (and less battle focus, please!).

While I am sorely disappointed in how this event has been introduced (and this includes the vitriolic response by some players which I do not under any circumstances agree with), I don't think it's unsalvageable by any means, and I am confident in the staff being willing and capable of taking our critiques and implementing them to improve on things in the future. Since I joined this site in 2018 I've been consistently impressed with how much the staff listens to and works with the community to make this game better. I have faith that this event will be no different, even if we're off to a rough start.

Hello all,

First off I mean no disrespect to the mods or devs. I know they work hard to give us content and make this a fun game. 9 times out of 10 they do a fantastic job and I haven't really had any complaints. The other event rehauls we've seen so far have been fun and exciting. That said . . .

The July event with Tefnut, Menhit, Apollyon, and Apedemak, was my favorite of all Lioden's events. I loved the explore encounters and storyline. Sure, it had been out awhile and a lot of us had gone through it at least once before, but it was still my favorite storyline. The teasers at backstories for the characters were intriguing, and I feel a lot could've been done there. The bit with Apedemak and the incest thing was strange to say the least, but I feel that could've been changed without throwing out the event entirely. There was still a lot of room to grow.

I will say the artwork in the explore for this event looks great. Not the battle opponents so much, but the backgrounds. Really nice to look at. However, the new event seems quite random and outlandish (literally) and doesn't really fit in with Lioden's theme. Most of the other events tie into Africa somehow. This one doesn't. I know there's no story yet, but how can battling dragons in space relate to African lions at all? I am a bit intrigued to see what the story turns out to be next year, but honestly I'd rather have the regular July event back.

Since Wolvden came out, I haven't paid much attention to Lioden at all. But I decided to login today to start the July event I loved so much. Once I rolled over and saw it was gone I was bitterly disappointed. I had really been looking forward to starting up the familiar storyline. I guess I missed the memo that came out saying this event was being retired, or I would've put feedback in then. (I do not think this new event is all that similar to Wolvden's Lunar event, though).

Since I am disappointed in this event, I don't think I will participate much. Using meteorite shards as currency for the new event explore feature seems odd, and I'm sure I'm not the only one blowing through shards at an alarming rate. I had over 300 at rollover this morning and now have less than half that, and that's just using one and half energy bars. The battling is frustrating. Sure, you win some, which is great. But the majority I am losing by a thread. Me and the enemy will have a shred of health left, and then my final move fails or they attack me for an absurd amount of damage and I'm out. I don't mind a challenge, but that is very frustrating when it happens with almost every battle. Though I could probably live with that if I actually liked the event. I'd make do.

I think I will keep my focus on Wolvden, honestly. It just agrees with me more.

For those of you that do like the new event, I'm glad. I'm not going to argue with anyone over that. Everyone can have their own opinion.

I get that the staff wanted to roll this new event out and were probably excited and anticipating our reactions, which makes me feel bad that I really don't like it. I wish I did like it. I know they put a lot of time and effort into it. Again, no disrespect to the staff of Lionden.

June: Snakes/serpents/snake-like-dragon-things
July: CELESTIAL Snake/Serpent/Snake-like-dragon-things

Maybe call me salty but.....I prefer lion content on a lion game? I'd have 100% preferred the Celestial Explore be a portal to the celestial lands that our previous cast of Celestial Lions came from.

I agree with almost everything in this thread. Personally, I was never a huge fan of the original July event or the storyline. I loved Menhit (I got her decor everytime) and Apollyon with his crazy mane and huge chin! However the event as a whole was overwhelming for me and Apedemak was just disgusting. There were a lot of things to do and after awhile I just focused on the storyline that I spammed through just to get to the apps. But I liked how it created a lore for the game. Having a false Lion god roaring his glory at the stars was funny (until he got creepy). Seeing Menhit with Apollyon during February was so cute, but now it won’t make any sense not that they’re gone. I agree with most people who said all they had to do was rework the storyline, get rid of Zimbabwe (I personally hated it), and do something else to introduce new bases besides the raffle (I don’t care for the bases but I love this months eyes and they’re so hard to come by!).

Now this new event… oof. I actually really like the aesthetic. I’m a huge nerd for dragons but it doesn’t feel like Lioden. Even the October event with demons and angels have Lion-like characters (I’m a simp for Nirah) so it sort of fit. I’m personally not bothered by battling a lot to gain currency since I just spam pound and win almost everytime. However the battling for this new event is just… ass. I don’t understand what happened here! The Halloween and June events have a lot of battling but theyre no where near as hard as this! They said they tweaked it to be easier, but like… where though? If I didn’t have over 50 lucky feet just lying around, I wouldn’t have been able to get enough AC for the three dragons decors that I wanted. I don’t breed stats but the fights really made me feel that I had to have a stat monster just to win!

I don’t like the drop rates for cores and shards. There should be more shards in the normal explore. I had over 1000 shards and now I’m down to about 300. I decided that I’m not going to continue wasting them in the celestial explore for a few drops of cores. I got enough to get what I wanted and now I’m done until they fix it further.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who really dislikes Wolvden’s grind. I recently gave up on that game because it was too hard and unfun. This event really does just scream “Lunar event” and I’m not about that tbh. The area is beautiful and has great art but it’s just not lioden. This event makes me worry that Lioden is just going to become Wolvden and I hate to see that happen. Wolvden is not fun! It’s just not! It’s nothing but stress! Lioden is way more chill. I’ve been playing this game since 2016 because of how it both relaxes me and stimulates my brain. I like thinking about the mechanics of the game and molding them to fit my play style. Wolvden is nothing just pure stress and the fact that the new event forces you to play only one way… *sigh* no. Cool dragons but no thank you. Don’t want it.

I really hope they listen to us further and retool this event some more. Make the drops more balanced and less grindy. Add a story to tie it in more with the Adventure storyline (like I thought it would be) and have it still take place in Africa just with fantasy elements like the Halloween event or the previous July event. No lions In space. Make it feel more like Lioden. It would be cool to see Menhit, her big chinned boyfriend and Tefnut again in some way. A lot of us love those characters and hate seeing them go.
Edit: I don’t know if someone has already asked this but why the draco constellation? Why not Leo?! Fight celestial lions. That could work. I don’t know if they plan of doing different constellations each year. Feels like a lot of work when they could’ve just focused on the LION constellation, Leo. Would’ve been a little less jarring for some. At least I think so.

No disrespect to the team. Just disappointment. Absolutely adore the art and I love this game. Just wish this was better thought out than it was.

That’s it. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.

Celestial explore seemed ok at first, but after that it was just all I'm really annoyed at how im losing battles there 90% of the time, wasting 30 shards for one core is not okay in my opinion. Shard drop in celestial explore needs to be raised too, make it 5+, or at least 5, it's better than getting nothing, but we're still losing shards if we only get around 3 shards every fail, it's not worth it

Hi there

I'd like to say that I completely agree with everything on this thread, including most of the comments made by other players. I also respect the hard work all the mods, admins, devs, etc. have put into the new event.

However, like what many people have pointed out, the Celestial Explore is too similar to the Lunar Event on Wolvden. As someone who is not a hard grinder, I don't have much time for the heavy grinding needed for the rehauled event. I'm sure this is true for many players here on Lioden. This could perhaps be fixed if the drop rate of AC can be increased for the Celestial Explore.

Additionally, although I have not gone through the July event before the rehaul, I have read over the wiki and have grown to like the characters. Moreover, like what Lex had said, after all the time and effort that have been put into creating all the marvelous characters in the former July event, why toss it all away? July would have probably turned out to be my favorite event on Lioden. Although it seemed complicated with all the elements such as Firefly Forest and Great Zimbabwe, it was manageable, and if you asked me, I don't think the new event is much simpler.

I really hope that the Lioden team can take a look at this thread and all the other forum posts that are trying to give constructive feedback. The community may enjoy if more if this event was made less grind-y and more earthly at the same time. Having lions battle dragons is slightly too off-topic when this game revolves around animals that live on a savanna. Don't get me wrong - the art is beautiful and dragons are lovely mystical creatures - but the rehaul seems to have gone a little too far off into the space.

I am aware that this is a completely new event and will be improved, but I have to say that it seems as if the community doesn't really appreciate it. In full honesty, neither do I. I sincerely hope that the they can try tweaking this new event. Again, I am not trying to voice disrespect towards the Lioden team. They've done wonderful so far with all the other events, and the art has always been spectacular. I am just disappointed, like many other people, but am confident that the team will be able to fix this.

Thank you!

The only thing I like about the new event is the art, but it seems to me that could have been added to the old event rather than completely taking its place. I think they should change large portions of the event back. This wasn't necessary and there are other events that people don't like/are not very fleshed out that should have been changed first.

Maybe I am the minority here but I actually like the new event. I did not like the old events storyline. What I did like were the characters and the applicators. Game need to change to freshen things up so it doesn't get boring. I am going to give the new event the benefit of the doubt. It sounds like more will be added next year, and it might end up being an event that everyone actually likes.

What I like about the new event is that they didn't intertwine the regular explore and the cosmic explore they kept them separate. I also like the new items that I am finding when battling or flying through space. What I would like is that they bring in a storyline that is lion based because this is Lioden after all, and it feels like lions are missing from the event.

I'm not loving this event so far....but to be fair I'm more than a bit salty about the character/storyline toss out. The art for this new event is beautifully stunning but that's the only positive thing I can say right now.

Was the story for the July event perfect? Not by a long shot. I still liked parts of it though. The idea of whispers/souls being used to hold Apedemak's kingdom together was intersting, it made sense for him to be panicked/distant over his kingdom's decay. His daughter running away to be with a sun god lion during such an event was adding insult to injury. I didn't like his insanity and his abusive behavior, the latter part seems so out of character for him. Before that he was this potentially insane lion but seemed harmless enough and a huge flirt besides.

It could have been fixed and we could have kept the characters that we'd grown attached to. I still remember everyone making a big deal about Apedemak's girlfriend in explore and trying to create her in game.I love how we all loved/loathed Appy's huge chin and it became a running joke. We loved Menhit's playfulness and felt for her, being a princess of a dying kingdom with a super stressed dad/king and all she wanted was to be normal and hang out with her boyfriend. Tefnut was one of my favorite NPCs, she seemed so gentle and kind. Maybe before the kingdom got to its current state, she and Apedemak spent a lot of time together and enjoyed it(even with Apedemak having a harem).

The idea of void magic/blight infecting the celestial kingdom was a great idea and it could have been expanded on without turning Apedemak into a total nutjob. I'm just disappointed with how it all turned out. July used to be my favorite event with my favorite characters....not to sure about it now.

It's not even the lack of story that's turning me off since we didn't have a story for Apedemak when he first showed up. It seems out of place/touch with the other events. Even the Heaven and Hell stuff feels more grounded in reality than this current event.

I would love to have the old characters back with a rewritten story and make this event the new Zimbabwe explore. I also loved the firefly raffle, it felt fun and gave me something to look forward to with all the plans for if I actually won a special lady. I also loved the little shopkeeper for the fireflies, she was so cute! Honestly, I haven't been this disappointed in a long time and I wish we had been a little less patient and a little more vocal about the changes that were made and our aversion to them, maybe it would have influenced some decisions or something.

First I have to say that I actually *did* love how dark the old event turned to be though I agree that it should have come with a trigger warning.
Now well...it almost looks like a test for some other game about space dragons (!), the art is wonderful but there's no reason given as to why my king is suddendly in outer space. It makes no sense whatsoever.

I agree with the points that everyone else has posted before me, and I also agree that the new art is stunningly beautiful and I'm grateful for the hard work that the artists and staff put into this.
However, I personally am not someone who grinds hard on lioden (or wolvden) I like just relaxing and enjoying the art and stories. I'm sad to see the old characters go, although I do agree with what others have said that the old story just needed to be revamped not tossed out entirely. I feel like the rate of shards vs what you get in cores for battling is skewed wrong, the difficulty with battling feels harder to slug through, not to mention the high price of items in Tefnut's Memories. I feel like if seasoned players are struggling with this event then new players are really going to struggle with the currency and difficulty.
