Sylvian

"Shibaan," He didn't rise to her frustration. He took a calm bite from some of the flesh in front of him and took his time chewing before swallowing. "Remember where we are. You are no longer a child, you are the next leader of this pack. I won't play this game with you anymore. Calm. Down." It almost felt like, for once, he was the older one.

They might have been a bit further out from the food than everyone else, but the rest of the pack always paid close attention to their moves. He might have given in when they were younger, but his parents raised him well, to follow in their footsteps as one of the next betas. He was no longer the playful pup who gave into her whims and rolled around the mud with her.

"I'm not telling you who to choose as a mate, but I am asking you to give it careful consideration. More than that, I'm asking you to secure your place as the next Alpha first."

Shibaan

The Betas calm demeanor made her even more angry. "You think I'm trying to play a game?" she snapped, before stopping herself. She took a deep breath, smoothing her fur. She glanced over her shoulder, fur prickling at the sight of the whole pack eavesdropping. She let out a low growl, and they all went back to eating. She looked back at Slyvian. Her blue eyes suddenly lost their fire. "Oh gods.. Athena and Lupin, why can't you just come back.." she murmurs under her breath. "Slyvian, I never asked to become the next Alpha." she looks down at her paws. Deep down she knows she must be the next Alpha. Shibaan just wanted to live her life as a normal Beta, and relax. Now she couldn't. Now she had to choose a mate, lead the pack, have pups.. It was too much for her to comprehend.

Cedar

Cedar listened quietly to Shibban and Sylvain arguing, ears pricked, still gnawing on his bone. He didn't want to get involved, caught between his new probably alpha and the beta that had already threatened him with demotion that very night. He listened for a few moments more, but when Sylvain indicated him with a tilt of the head, Cedar decided it was past time to leave, and return to the den. Tail still low, he brought the bone with him. Perhaps he'd give it to the pups later, but for now, all he wanted was a bit of a rest.

He would've followed Athena and Lupin to the ends of the earth, and he should feel the same for Shibaan. He had to feel the same for Shibaan. Raising his head, he left at a slow trot, hoping that some wolf wouldn't try to grab his attention. By the gods, if it was Tenn boasting about his extra share...
Cedar was much too tired to deal with all this. A quick nap should be all he needed.

//I actually need to sleep irl now lol. I wasn't looking at the time and now it's almost 12 at night. I have to get up early tomorrow

Sylvian

Her sudden dejection surprised him. He figured she would calm down once she thought of the pack but he hadn't spoken with her about her role yet. He thought he knew her better than anyone but he thought she would be eager to step up. He almost wanted to ram his head against the wall for his foolishness. He knew her dreams. He should've expected the reluctance.

Before he could continue, Cedar caught his eye. He hadn't spoken with him about what he truly wanted to either but this was the more important matter right now. He nodded his head and the delta made his way to the den.

Turning back to Shibaan, his tone turned softer than it had in a long time, "I know this isn't what you wanted. No one wanted this. I wish I could be the one to be there for you, but as the one of the only pillars still standing I have to focus on the survival of the pack. I don't want this burden either, but I accept it as a duty."

There were things she didn't yet know about the crisis that enveloped the pack, but he felt this was the wrong time to say them.

"Keep it together, and we'll get through this."

Tenn

Tenn knew that he should leave as well, so he took the meat he was eating and followed some of the other wolves back to the den until Shibaan and Sylvain were done discussing with one another.

Tenn was an orphaned pup, who was supposed to die not only for being the runt of the litter, but because the litter he came from was too big and he appeared too weak and frail. Athena and Lupin had been kind enough to accept Tenn into the pack, but as the lowest ranking wolf. It wasn't out of disrespect of him, but out of fairness to the rest of the pack. Ever since he was given a second chance, Tenn had worked hard not only to slowly climb the ranks, but to provide for the family who had saved him. Tenn did miss Athena and Lupin, but he trusted Shibaan and would follow her to the ends of the Earth to keep the pack safe.

Shibaan

She listened to Sylvian's words. Her blue eyes were rimmed with worry. She looked into his eyes when he spoke the last few words. The she-wolf nodded, a flicker of hope forming within her. She had barely noticed she hadn't eaten quite yet. There were only leftovers now. "Thank you Slyvian." she smiled gratefully, turning towards the carcass. She frowned as her favorite parts of the carcass had been eaten. She halfheartedly tore off a chunk of meat. The once warm meat was now cold. She ate the chunk, and laid down as she chewed at a leg. Her ears swiveled at every noise. She heard the yip of a nearby fox and a low growl formed in her throat. Someone would have to guard the carcass tonight.

Cedar

Cedar had flopped down onto his nest of pine branches, enjoying the strong scent as he watched the pups tussle and fight, pulling on tails and biting ears. Occasionally one of the elders would nip a particularly naughty pup's rump, reminding it to play nice. Cedar had never been sure what to feel about pups. They were loud, messy, and took up plenty of the pack's energy, but Cedar had always been a sucker for their cute little faces. Now, though, with everything that had happened today, Cedar rolled over to face the den wall, a clear sign that he would be telling no stories tonight.

Closing his eyes, his flanks began to rise and fall in a deceptively even rhythm. His mind still spun, filled with thoughts about Athena and Lupis, of all the hunts they had joined him on, of the final hunt, where the pair had set out into the storm with a promise of return with enough prey to save them from starvation still echoing around the den. The frantic searching, when after a few days the still didn't return. Cedar shook himself mentally. He should try and focus on happier times, but even the memory of his first hunt was now stained by the memory of the previous alphas. It hadn't been right. An alpha was supposed to die after a life long lived, or in battle, defending their pack. Not just go missing, lost forever in the endless snow. Could even the gods see them now?

Cedar drifted into an uneasy sleep.

Shibaan

She looked up from her kill, a fox was stalking her. Shibaan moved herself closer to the kill, a sign she wouldn't share. The fox looked at her with big watery eyes, each one of its ribs were visible. She couldn't help but feel a stab of sympathy. She tore away a chunk of meat, big enough for the fox. She tossed it to the fox and it hesitated. The fox let out a yip of thanks and scurried off with its meal. Shibaan stared after the fox and continued eating. Once she had eaten her fill she got up and marked off the carcass with scent markers. Smart scavengers wouldn't dare come near. The wolf laid down in the snow and rolled. The blood came off her fur easily. She only got up when her fur was clean once more. The she-wolf walked back to the den, and looked at the barrier. She thought it could still use some patching up but it would play a huge part in keeping the cave warm. Shibaan padded into the cave, the ticking of her claws on the floor echoed. She went to the far back, and laid down with a huff.

Hesper.

The elder's gaze drifted to the leftovers of the carcass, analysing to see if there was anything edible left that wouldn't be given to another wolf. A pang of hunger reminded her of how long it had been since she last ate. She sighed, swiping her tongue over her upper jaws and laying back down. The soft yaps and barks of the pups made it hard to rest, and she gently nipped at one particular cub who kept triumphantly barking everytime they won a tussle.

Sylvian

After some time spent alone and observing Shibaan mark their kill, Sylvian made his way to the den and was the last to arrive. It seemed most of the other wolves had already gone to sleep. He made his way towards one of the elders, a heavy cut of moose shoulder meat in his jaw.

Hesper was also a strong remaining pillar from a time that now seemed far in his memory, a time when the pack was at peace and in proper order. He nudged the resting wolf with his head and placed the food before her. His tone was soft, as it often was when speaking to the elders, especially the ones who helped raise him, "I figured you might not be full at the end of dinner so I saved this for you."

Shibaan

The white wolf looked around the cave. She wasn't tired, just bored. Perhaps she could work with the pups? She decided against that, last time she'd done so, one of the pups had a close call with a hawk. Maybe she could... Shibaan looked around the cave, thinking. She stood up and walked past an insubordinate. The young wolf stared at her, ears perked, and a barely audible growl arose.
The she-wolf stiffened. Who was teaching these wolves manners? Shibaan turned to the young wolf, the fur along her back rising. The young wolf only growled louder. The white wolf was over with these overly confident juveniles. Shibaan bared her teeth, her posture tall. The young wolf stood up, challenging her rank. Was this wolf dumb? Trying to challenge her? The she-wolf lunged at the young wolf, pinning them to the ground. The young wolf didn't give in, and thrashed under her weight. Shibaan snarled louder.
The young wolf squirmed more, and accidentally nipped Shibaan. The she-wolf suddenly lashed out, releasing the young wolf and snapping her jaws at the insubordinate. Her teeth raked across the young wolf's flank, barely drawing blood. She wasn't trying to hurt the wolf, only teaching it a lesson. The younger wolf cowered down, tail tucked, and showed its belly in submission. Shibaan huffed, and walked away.

Cedar

He awoke to the sound of Shibaan's snarl, teeth bared, lips pulled back to expose long, white fangs. Cedar calmed when he realized Shibaan was simply putting an insubordinate back in their place, but he still felt a trickle of unease. It was unusual for an alpha to have to assert themselves over a wolf so young, but then again, Shibaan hadn't been an alpha for long. As Shibaan left the den, he let out a quiet, huffing sigh. No point in trying to get back to sleep for a while now, at least. With a soft whine, he called over a couple of the better behaved pups, offering a story. Speaking quietly, in order to not wake the others, he began.

"Once, little pups, long, long ago, before the northern pack even existed, this land was once a great forest, lush and warm, and full of life. A deer could be found behind every tree, and fresh water flowed from every stream. Presiding over this great land was a single pack numbering hundreds upon hundreds of large beasts known in that time as direwolves. They were direct decendants of the gods, able to rule in peace over every living creature. But over time, the gods began to weaken, and began to leave the forest, returning to their homes in the stars. With the gods vanishing, the peaceful order of the direwolves was shattered. The pack splintered, and fell into war, alpha against alpha, with even the pups at each other's throats." Here Cedar paused, looking over at the pups, who had fallen silent, apparently exhausted by the day's excitement.

Picking the pups gently up, he returned the pups to the elders, before leaving the den. He needed to stretch his legs a little more before he could go back to sleep with the pack. Just a quick stroll through the trees, to collect his thoughts.

//that got long lol

Hesper.

The elder lifted her head from her paws, her blurred gaze setting on the younger wolf after a second. '..thank you.' Her voice was quiet and hushed, her weariness clear as she lowered her head slightly to take the cut of meat. She covered the food with one paw, giving a grateful look to Sylvian. She was too tired to say anything more, but her gaze spoke enough words.

The pup looks up from his nap and yawns. He stretches and walks over to the entrance of the cave, looking at the trees. He looks over at the other pups and elders. He takes one more glance at the landscape before walking back to the other pups and heading back to sleep.

Shibaan

The white wolf shivered at the temperature difference when she stepped out of the den. The icy cold air stung at her nose. Shibaan flinched at the cold snow underneath her paws. She would patrol the West border today as she heard some howling coming from that direction. She wanted to be sure no rouges or dispersals were settling along the border. She opened her maw, letting the scents bathe her. The wolf turned to the West and set off.

Altair

The male wolf dug at a burrow. Stupid.. Rabbit. He saw a pair of ears, and snatched them in his jaws. Altair pulled the rabbit out of its burrow, shaking his head and subduing his prey. Once it fell limp, he grabbed it properly and went back to his den. He had made a makeshift one a few days ago, when the storm hit. The blizzard had been terrible and lasted forever. With the free time he had in the den he had expanded it. His den was quite large now, and the snow blocked any of the icy air from blowing in. Altair stepped over the Northern Pack's border, a skip in his step. The best den was always in someone else's territory.
