(This is so cool! You're totally fine) The fish you can see seem undisturbed, even curious at your hand in the water, gingerly swimming forward to kiss your fingers, more and more come from the depths and you notice that what you thought was the bottom of the pool is just a deep abyss. The fish swim forward, colors, shimmering in rainbows beneath the clear surface. But, as you move your hand, swishing the water and shifting the plants, the movement is unmistakable. In a flash of color and shimmer, and one of the more fanciful fish is no more. ![]() |

The suddenness of the loss shocked me for a second, my hand momentarily stilling, its rocking motion now fueled by the water pressure rather than my own conscious thought. However, my senses soon returned, and though careful to ensure my fingers remained a distance away from the cave, I returned to my random yet methodical movements; the water swirling in mesmerising patterns as the plants flowed freely. Although the nudging of the fish had before drawn my attention away, I now kept keen eyes on the darkness that the cave held; pleading for the dweller to make him -or her- self known. Although the dweller was clearly quick, and dangerous to the fish, I was drawn by the mysterious-ness of the creature. Besides, if all else did fail, the eyes were still upon me from the grasses; they hadn't gone away, I had just neglected to care they existed since first seeing the fish. ![]() |

It seems the creature in the water has taken notice of you as well, you can see the flash of light from the reflection in the eyes of a predator, and the scales of a large fish behind the blanket of plant life is unmistakable, and beautiful... The loss of the fish doesn't seem to bother the others as more come up from the depths, happily greeting your hand with gentle brushes and fishy kisses, all munching on the flowers growing from the depths. ![]() |

As tempted as it was to grab a fish as an offering, the idea of being so unnecessarily cruel was but a fleeting one. Instead, I turned my attention to trying to tempt the creature from its home by other means; with each movement of my wrist, I edged my hand ever closer. I kept the tempo calm, the ripples of the water soft and quiet; I knew not rather it would scare if I was to make bubbles as I had prior, and I longed to see the creature in its watery glory. The fish were now just mere motions in the water, gentle brushes of scales against my skin, as my attention was wholly consumed with the creature of the cave. "Come scaly one," I muttered quietly, as though the cave dweller could hear me. ![]() |

A clear voice seems to echo from the depths... "I am hungry. But you do not think these fish deserve death for my hunger. For why, dear stranger..?" The eyes seem to have come closer, its face just barely overshadowed in the cave. Yellow pools of glistening light gaze back at you... "You offer me a hand, but this hand is not but a trap for my hunger... you do not intend to feed, but to gaze upon me, for what shall I get in return...?" The water grows still once more but in the evening light, it grows dimmer, the eyes seeming to glow in the depths. ![]() |

"My hand is not for feeding, that I do confirm," I replied to the echoing voice, as I continued to swirl the waters, "and whilst I would mourn the death of such colourful, the cycle of life cannot be halted. Life cannot be without death." As I stopped and thought for what more to speak, more fish swam around my fingers, and gave me an idea. "With my movements, fish have come from far beneath: allow me to gaze upon you, and I shall visit daily to bring them to the surface, for there they would be easy prey for one so swift as you." My offer was one that unsettled me, but what I spoke was truth; life cannot exist without death, and I would not - could not - stop the cycle in its path. ![]() |

The voice sounds curious, "You will sacrifice your own moral, to feed a creature such as I? That lives in the dark, simply in the belief that I am beautiful...?" A paw seems to shoot out from the reeds, pulling in another fish, a smaller, less colorful one this time. It almost sounds embarrassed, but seems to toy with the idea in its head. "I do not require these depths to survive, but the moisture is quite nice and the darkness of this cave is perfect for naps out of the heat of the day... I will allow your sight under the condition that you find me something more delicious than these morsals." ![]() |

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder; and who can say what is true beauty? You confuse my desire to see you with your own thoughts on beauty, I wish to see that which intrigues me, which brings forth curiosity within me - is that so wrong oh scaled one?" Came my reply, spoken without much thought but what I truly felt. This time, I didn't react when it took another fish; it didn't shock me as much now I knew it lived within the cave. "Your bargain I agree to; state that you wish me to bring, and I will ensure it is done so for the 'morrow." ![]() |

"I simply desire something tastey..." the voice trails into silence and the frame of the creature sinks back into the darkness. The gentle lap of the water tickles your palm as the fish themselves seem to tire of the novelty of your fingers beneath its cool surface, as the swim off, they continue to nibble on the small blossoms, but as your gaze drifts, you notice bigger blossoms, flowers that might fit in the palm of your hands. "However, I must tell you, be careful disturbing the fish too much... there are far worse things in these depths than I.. ![]() |

"Something tasty it shall be then," I replied, my mind already thinking of what could be gathered to prepare a meal suitable. Ripped from my thiughts I was though by the drastic change within the pond. The warning tone of the words, the loss of contact from the fish, even the sudden chill of the water; it caused me to freeze. Whilst probably not the wisest idea, I froze solid and held my breath, too scared to even pull away from the water for fear of what might be lurking beneath. The blossoms, once might have held wonder, now seemed eerie, an omen to something far greater than expected. Motionless, I only moved where the water directed me, fearing that to be too still would in its own way prove too dangerous. ![]() |

Something rumbles in the deep for a moment, before once again growing quiet, this too seemed like a warning, something guarding... protecting even. Ripples in the water drift towards you, despite all of the fish disappearing beneath its depths and into the shadows. A single blossom bobs gently, as if a large bug had just landed atop its dainty petals, but no such creature could be located. The gentle shiver of the petals feels strange too, the blossom is a quiet pink, a stark contrast to all the other blues and yellows in the water, and the way it floats atop the surface feels different as well, the other blossoms seemed to fall apart in the water but this one stays sturdily intact. ![]() |

The rumbling of the water before me was meet from a growl in the grasses behind; it seemed my shadow hadn't left, merely been silent. But I couldn't afford to calm the shadow, for the pond was far more dangerous than I had ever imagined; I saw why the scaled one had feld into their cave; "Thank you scaled one," I whispered before my attention was drawn completely to blossom. The petals almost seemed to dance as it floated along and fell apart. Slowly, I lifted my hand from the water and made as though to reach forward to the blossom which remained, but was scared to frighten whatever force was there which held the fragile pink together. "What magic lie within the pond, what creatures sleep within the darkness, and how does the small blossom link the danger to the beauty?" I whispered to myself. ![]() |

Silence fills the pond once more as night falls, it seems to be divoid of life now, nothing but cold, clear liquid, empty and numb. The hesitance in your reaction does not stop the blossom from floating closer as the structure crumbles bit by bit. As the blossom gingerly falls apart, a tiny, pink, translucent egg rolls into the water. Its color seeming to match the delicate petals.. Floating on the surface before very slowly beginning to sink... ![]() ![]() |

I watched without blinking as the blossom fell apart, and it took just a moment longer to reach out to cup the egg as it started to sink - a violent motion made without thought; water went everywhere as I protected the egg from the darkness and pulled it close to the edge I sat beside and as close to the surface as possible. Through the violence of my movement, I was wondered I had woken the beasts within the water, but I dare not extract my hand completely, for fear what might happen to the egg: "You're safe little one, nothing will harm you now." My movements had upset the shadow of the grasses though, and no longer was it a shadow, but Goober. "I should have known it would be you," I sighed in defeat as I realised I was now stuck; if the egg needed water, how could I protect it without living at the pond until it hatched? Goober wouldn't leave my side til sunrise now, and I had no bucket with me. Curse my moral compass I thought... ![]() |
