This thread began as a way to bring attention to the fact that the Golden color group is being neglected in favor of other, more prominent color groups, both because it gets fewer additions and because those additions are nothing like what you’d usually expect from the Golden color group – for example, Green, Labradorite, and the latest addition, Ember.

To start with hard facts: It has been almost a year since I first posted this, and here are all the new bases we got since December 2018:
  • Black Group: Aufeis, Elysian, Rhino, Glass, Velvet, Murk, Leonids, Demiurge, Augur, Noctis, Spectre, Frotbitten, Snowflake

  • Cream Group: Alabaster, Heavenly, Ammonite, Moss Agate, Guardian

  • Golden Group: Maziwa, Ornament, Ember, Angelic, Festive, Hyena, Nudar, Sunspot, Sahara, Victor

  • Red Group: Rough Ruby, Wine, Sha, Rose Gold, Scoundrel, Merlot, Hibiscus, Rhubarb

Final count of bases added from December 2018 - May 2020: 13 Black bases, 5 Cream bases, 10 Golden bases, 8 Red bases.

And the final count of all the bases currently in game? A total of 67 Black bases, 53 Cream bases, 58 Golden bases and 59 Red bases.

If you want a more updated version of this long explanation below, take a peek at the latest lament of a golden breeder here.

To me it feels highly unfair that there is this blatant neglection going on because either a) apparently Golden bases are hard to make, or b) players that prefer other color groups don’t like it and that’s why we get such “interesting” additions to spark interest. And of course, we don’t see Golden intruding in other color groups, to spark “interest” in those in exchange – not that I’d want that to happen, but it’s the principle of the thing.

I like Goldens. Well, I like the concept of Goldens as they were. Nacarat, Goldenrod, Doubloon, Sulphur, Sunshine, and Champagne, to name a few. So, what if other players find them bland or boring? You won’t see me complaining seriously about other groups’ additions because I think they are an eyesore, if they are liked by others, that’s absolutely fine. But we’ve been waiting years for nice Golden bases and, when we finally do, we keep getting these weird things that more often than not are hard to breed or come from a really hard to make applicator, on top of that.

Dhahabi was supposed to be our November’s applicator back in November 2017, to pair up with Penumbra and Fossil, as you can see here, but then, after a long anticipated wait, exclusive bases became a thing and we were left with no applicators for Golden bases except the regular custom ones until May 2018, with Trophy. This has happened again and again, with Labradorite being added on July 2018 to Goldens for some unfathomable reason – though I’d be hard pressed to pick a proper color group for its final design, to be honest –, Xanthic, ect.

Another thing that keeps happening is that all the applicable bases seem to be going to the Solid gradient. Up until Anubis and Bast, there wasn’t a single Golden Countershaded Special base one could apply, and when they were first introduced you could only get one of those per account, as a reward for completing the new June 2018’s storyline – and, in fact, keep being the only ones, as there are no Uncommon ones.

In the original post, I mentioned that, while there seemed to be events dedicated to other color groups, there wasn’t a single one dedicated to Golden: February with its Red bases, March starting with Cream and then getting one (1) Golden base (Chatoyant), May with the long road towards crafting the Trophy applicator and this year’s addition of Ornament, then June started with two (2) Golden bases and one (1) Red that could be used to breed for the Golden combo base Gilded, but 2019 got one (1) more Black with Velvet, one (1) more Red with Sha and one (1) Cream with Alabaster, and make up the factors to trigger the Rose Gold combo base, which is Red. July features mostly Blacks, with 9 Black bases against Sunset and Sunrise, which belong to the Red color group, Labradorite which was, sadly, added as a Golden, and then the Cream Heavenly -, August started with the stud exclusive Ruffian Cream base, and the hard to get Solaris Cream applicator, but also got the Scoundrel stud base this year, September has so far the Red applicable base Locust and the newest Black base, Augur, October has featured Red bases since the big Genetics overhaul, November started featuring only Creams and then got the addition of Black with Penumbra and Nuumite, and last we have December with – you guessed it – more Black bases. And what does Golden have? Hybrid bases and explore exclusive. Nice if you want a challenge, not so nice if you want to go on with your breeding projects customizing existing cubs.

To summarize that big block of information above, Black seems to be everywhere followed by Red, and then Cream and Golden are left forgotten in a corner to be recalled sporadically and, in the case of Golden, with the weirdest and/or hardest to get bases.

I understand people voted in the polls for Blacks to get additions first back in the day because there are a lot more breeders focused on the group as a whole or liked the bases better, but that doesn’t mean Golden isn’t loved by players and that it doesn’t deserve some attention for a change. There are some suggestions in the base and mane base forums that would look right at home with the more “classical” Goldens, and if everything else fails there is always the option to make other existing bases’ recolors, too.

This suggestion has 338 supports and 16 NO supports.

This would also be the perfect time to introduce some even just thinking about inspirations from fall foods: Pumpkin, Squash, Maize, Butter, Sweet Potato. If people don't want the event to be altered to accommodate, they could be made available in Monkey Business, or as part of a Black Friday deal. I dunno, just thinking outloud!

There are also bases like kimanjano, citrine and now mandarin! They arent app bases (shame ;;) but they ARE always in high demand on TC, on par with july bases in price. So yea people are indeed willing to spend money to get gold bases.

Applicable gold CS base app when

My lions aren't really 'natural' but I'm a clean breeder and Gold bases are my favorite. In the past, I've tried breeding for a Kimanjano king (unsuccessfully), and will probably attempt to breed for a Mandarin king in the future.

Cream bases are pretty as well, my last king was my absolute favorite lion and he had the Ethereal base from an App. I'd love to see more Gold base apps, and I've certainly bred my girls to lots of studs with Gold App bases, so I would say there's a market for it.

If golds got as much attention as the other groups. and had some cool bases like the other groups, maybe people would like gold bases more. Rolled kings are more than just golden, they're a color fail from any group. As a gold breeder, I get at least 3 stud requests a week. I have golden cubs that still do get bought. It's almost like,, if there were more good golden options, there would be more people interested in breeding! The market or whatever isnt 100% of the game either. Theres still people who just so happen to like golds, regardless of who doesn't care about them.

I would love to see an even spread of attention to all color groups!

I agree, @Gylbane! Mind you, cool doesn't imply having another Labradorite

Hey now, labradorite can be good :p but yeah more *gold* bases would be lovely. I like the idea Shakira proposed, using like, fall foods to base some off of. NOW I *have* to complain about Honey. It's not out yet but it is on the wiki genetics page in the BLACK group. What?!? Honey is the perfect golden base why is it in black? Give gold Honey 2k18

Those were my thoughts when I saw it in there! Strangely enough, Honey is no longer in the wiki's genetics page

??? Huh wonder where that went. Maybe that means itll be moved to golds hehe.

I would honestly love some more non applicable uncommon (uncommon-special) gold bases. Asali and Dhabi wow I cant spell rn, are good! But i want ones to randomly pop up in breeding! Just some more if anything.

Hmm. At least now it's better than it was when I joined, as now we have Champagne, Dinar and Sulphur as breed-only. Wouldn't hurt to have more, but personally I'd prefer at least one special applicator base before getting to those. Making the bases and adapting them to each lineart takes time, after all.

Another golden-lover here. I think there's definitely a market and there would be more of a market if Golden got more attention than the occasional NCL base or really unnatural base. Now, nothing wrong with unnatural colors if you like them, but there are plenty of natural breeders that like the softer, more natural goldens and creams.

I really do wish that Golden got at least one month where we got a nice natural(ish) Golden base applicator each year. It's literally the only group that is excluded from this.

I don't breed Goldens, but hhhhh this is this a problem.

On a lion sim of all things people should have the ability to make valuable and pretty kings that look like real lions. And these kinds should be able to make cubs that look vaguely like real lions and can be decently useful in breeding more pretty, Special/Rare/Etc-based golden, lion-looking lions.

Breed-only bases are fun and all, but to get them you need stepping stones- say, to [naturally] pass Mandarin, you first need a nice-looking king with a Golden Medium Countershade Special base. Short of breeding a Nacarate or Dhahabi through luck, the only applicable base of the right colorgroup is... Bast. Which is pretty nice, but doesn't look natural in the slightest.
So getting that middle step to a super-valuable natural king with a pretty-valuable natural king requires either a lot of extra luck [on top of getting any marks/mane/eyes/etc you want] or using a base that will have to be completely covered up with marking apps, all while knowing that if a cub is born with the base without being a king-clone it'll be completely out of wack with your pride. [Of course you could sell it for a tidy profit, but it sucks to feel forced to that instead of keep 'em as a breeder or for pride lore or whatever gameplay you're going for]

Of course there are beautiful natural bases that can be applied, but none that perfectly fit that specific hypothetical project. They'll have different genetics, either other natural Special/Uncommon bases in the Golden group [which, as noted prior, are scarce as hell] or go for more feasible options in, let's say, the Cream group [Fossil seems most relevant]... which might result in cubs that don't look at all like natural lions, depending on how the base genetics interact, leaving you back where you were with Bast.

Meanwhile, if I have a perfect heir born but want a blue or a grey or a blue-grey or a near-colorbomb theme going on, I've got four different applicator bases to chose from [Ice, Penumbra, Korat and Divine] to match whatever my pride lore may be or the look I'm going for. There's a clear disparity here pffft.

I can play through one of three different events [December, November or this year's July] to get an app of the right base group for either Event currency or for just completing a storyline; though Bast is a storyline drop too, you can't get more than two [one per account], can't farm it, and if someone missed June for whatever reason they have no chance to work and get a few Golden Medium Countershade Special apps. It's one shot, and that doesn't feel right.

Also, a side note; is anyone here in contact with those who update the Wiki?

This is going off-topic from the Goldens problem, but I think it's still relevant to natural breeders...
As of right now, on the November Event page, Fossil Body isn't dropping from anything. Fossil Fur can drop from that daily luck of the draw, but Nautilus has replaced Fossil in the Fossil Crafting section, and it doesn't seem to be available for purchase in the Shaman Shop... I am no natural breeder, so I can't comment on if Nautilus will also work, but it's significantly more cream/gingery than Fossil's gold and slight cream. Just hoping this was a little mistake, and not a case of Fossil suddenly becoming extremely rare
