Nire's eyebrow arched at what Lyla was saying. It was good he was gone but the whole thing seemed to knocked a few stones loose in her head. Talking about the walking dead or whatever. It wasn't natural or wise. Best not to speak of such things at length. It will call upon bad luck. She said curling her lip slightly. Looking to the Spekboom she saw Talen had come out, and was standing there with all of his supplies waiting. Getting up she gave Lyla a sidelong glance before walking over to him. You are going into the desert? She asked. Crossing. I have a few stops on
the way however. Why? He responded, briefly adjusting his straps. I want to cross it but, as you said, I am unprepared and ignorant. He chuckled. Did I say that out loud? She shook her head, looking back to Lyla. I... Things happened and got in the way but I promised myself I would help them. I was wrong to run away, my feelings were not wrong but I need to at least finish this. This is a long way to ask for help. He smiled, it wasn't unreasonably far to the Sunset Valley so it was not a huge favor to ask, so it didn't take him long to nod his head.

Nire sighed and looked to the ground, her destination was still the eternal river but she could at least lead Lyla to the herds like she originally planned. After a moment she turned and trotted up to Lyla and the cubs. I will forgive you but I won't forget you freezing like that. That isn't what a pride, a family, does. If the roles were reversed I would have done something if not anything in your place. Doing nothing- She bit her tongue, flattening her ears and holding her breath. She was not going to nag. Next time, you won't find me. No matter how far you search. She growled, right up in Lyla face before reaching and pulling the sled ropes from her and slipping it on herself. Now, lets go. Talen will guide us across the desert. She spoke, gesturing to the lion before putting her weight into the harness and starting to walk.

Lyla and Rory

Tears began to flood her eyes. Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! She had messed up the only friendship she had cared about in a long time. Her head dropped to the ground, she wouldn’t look up. She grabbed the rest of the bags and slung them over her shoulders. “Thank you.” she spoke shamefully.

Rory began to wake up. He had been sleeping most of the morning on the sled. “Mam-“ he began to grunt. “Auntie Nire! Auntie Nire! I missed you! I thought you were going to be gone for FOREVER!” He was bounding around Nire excitedly and unaware of the tension between Nire and his mother. He looked over to Talen and let out a little growl, “Who are you? You better not have hurt my auntie Nire!” He jumped in front of her, puffing up his fur, as if he could match the lion’s size.

Lyla swatted him back closer to her. “That’s enough Rory. He helped her where I didn’t.” She gave him a little grin. “I’m sorry m-mister,” he stuttered a little, “thank you for helping her.” He pawed at the ground, pushing up some of the dust.

Vera noticed her mother tearing up, "Are you alright, mother?" she mewed softly. Ronan meanwhile came down beside his brother, just staring at the other male. The only time Ronan and his siblings saw another male was when Nire and Lyla were fighting with one back at their own densite, which wasn't a pleasant memory. This one, however, smelt almost welcoming and unharmful. His ears flattened and he kept giving Talon the side eye when he trotted over to Nire, "We missed you so much! You were so brave when fighting that other lion!" he said excitingly, his front paws on Nires arm and hind legs firmly on the ground.

Talen stifled a grin when the feisty one, called Rory, squared up to him. Full of spunk that one. Stomping like an angry skunk pup. It was rather amusing. Then two more tumbled out of the sleigh, one which didn't seem to care about him and the other was cautious. Hearing them all talk he more or less got the gist of what put Nire into the shape she was in. He guessed it was a rogue lion that happened upon the small pride which resulted in a fight. All things considered, Nire got off pretty light but he also had a feeling that she could be impulsive. Again it wasn't his place to get involved so, with a shake of his mane, he changed his train of thought.

Nire walked to Talen, the load getting lighter as the cubs all woke and took in their surroundings. I missed you all too. If anything, she felt bad for leaving them behind and was selfishly glad that they didn't seem to realize that she had abandoned them. I would think introductions are in order, my new friends. Talen said as he watched some cubs scurry around Nires feet and kept his gaze on the one that remained attached to her paw. Right. Lifting her paw a bit with Ronan holding on. This is Ronan. She turned to Lyla, pausing for a moment, noticing her tears before looking at the cubs. The fighter is Rory and the kitten is Vera. Their mother is Lyla. Talen then bows his head a bit in their general direction. I am Talen. I will be your guide to cross the desert. Don't worry, I may be young but I have crossed many times. He then looked at Lyla. I will be taking you to the Sunset Valley's pride. They are a large group but are quite friendly to strangers as they sustain themselves on trade. From there you can decide if you want to stay with them or continue with me the rest of the way across. The crossing won't be easy for them. He gestured a paw towards the cubs at her feet. They wouldn't go far today, just to the point of no return where they could stock up on water and wait for night to travel.

She shook her head and gave a fake smile. “The night will definitely be easier on all of us, but the hyenas will be out looking for blood.” She looked to Vera, “I’m fine sweetie, just a little tired.”

Even though he had already been introduced, Rory started yelling. “I’m Rory and I’m the leader of this pride!” Lyla picked the cub up and set him next to her. “One day you can be a leader, but today…” she ruffled his fur, “but today you’re my little Rory.” He yelled out in protest, “Hey! I’m big! I’m big!” She laughed at his protests.

Vera looked over at Talen, curious, "Hiiii!" she mewed excitingly. Ronan realized the male wasn't a threat, and purred. He turned over to see Rory, "Nuh-uh! Someday I'LL be leader, you're too small for that" he batted his brother rudely on his head. Vera padded over to his brothers, "Why can't I be leader!" she protested, and Ronan turned around, " 'cause you're a girl!" Vera proceeded to jump on top of Ronan, both rolling in the sand

With the cubs running around and underfoot Talen kept his tail up high and out of the reach of little teeth. Lylas concerns were valid but it wasn't likely to happen. The hyenas have been packing up more than normal but food is still the only thing in their minds. Spotties don't enter the desert itself. The bulk of them probably went towards the wetlands, though I heard those lands are suffering as well. Rumor is most of the elephant family in the area got trapped in mud. Hopefully lots of those hyenas that went to scavenge also met the same fate as the elephants. Nire found it hard to believe, she had originally come from north of the wetlands and had passed through the area before she met Lyla. The place was so wet the air was heavy. Hard to believe the drought has spread that far. She mused, wondering how her family was doing if they were in line of the hyenas movement.

While padding towards the rest point the pair watched the cubs bickering and playing. At this pace they will tire themselves out. If they keep it up they will sleep all day and have to walk in the sand. He chuckled, short legs made for tedious sand strides. It is good your friend brought the sled but we will probably have to ditch it. It will be easier without it. Nire agreed. She had never crossed the great desert but she had come across some sand dunes. Pulling anything on it was hard going as it would always get full of sand. At least there were enough adults to carry one each if they start struggling or they run into trouble.

“Mom! Ronan said I was too little to be a leader!” He looked back at his brother, “I’m still GrOwInG!” Looking back at their mother he pouted, “One day I’ll be big like him, right mama?” He was gesturing to Talen. “Yes my love, you will get much bigger. But just because you’re small,” she looked at Ronen, “or a girl doesn’t mean you can’t be a leader. We play follow the leader and sometimes Vera is the leader. And she’s a good leader too.” She tried to encourage the cubs and bring it to their level, but she was loosing them. She sighed, “Never mind. You’ll get it one day.”

Vera nodded her head, sticking her tongue out to Ronan. Ronan rolled his eyes, still thinking about being the leader. 'One day, I'm gonna rule over my siblings and they'll listen to me!' he thought, smirking as he thought about it. Vera was disturbed by his smirk, "Mother! Ronans being weird!" Ronan batted Vera. "Ouch! That HURT Ronan!" she snapped. Ronan laughed, "you're too dramatic!"

She was getting sick of their bickering, but kept her composure. The earth feel good between her paws and she took in their surroundings. She didn’t walk as close to the other two lions, trying not to impose. They had no real reason to help her and yet they did. For that she was forever grateful. “Talen,” She paused, “what should we look out for in the desert. I’ve never been to this part.”

„Should I cross the desert?”, she thought. The thought crossed her mind several times before, but she didn’t really think about it until now. She had heard that there is a river at the other side of the desert, where she wanted to go, though she is unsure, if the risk was worth. She didn’t know the desert and where to find water and the easiest way was straight through the territory of a big pride. And that was a risk she didn’t want to take thoughtlessly.
