A time where vampire myths are commonly believed, and suspicion of the undead is high.
You reside in the town of Rivercrest, which seems like just another town, but when night falls it becomes far more sinister.

You are a vampire, and now it's time you have to choose whether you'll be swayed by your immortal bloodlust and feast to your undead heart's content, either manipulating your way to the top, using your wits to avoid being caught, isolating from the mortals and only interacting when it's time to feed, or simply slaughtering all those who oppose you. Or, you could try your best to shun who you are, and feed as little as possible, or only on consenting humans. But without feeding, you'll soon begin to find your immortality dwindling.
But, it's not just human hunters you have to worry about, werewolves will stop at nothing to rip you to shreds, if you're not careful, the toxic rays of dawn could soon turn you to mere ashes.

Notes on Vampirism.
A vampire in this roleplay is practically undead, they have no heartbeat, no breathing, and are cold to the touch apart from after feeding on human blood. The longer a vampire goes without feeding, the more they begin to look like a corpse, and the colder they become. If they go too long without feeding, a vampire will enter a 'bloodstarved' rage, and attack anything living on sight. Animal blood can be drank, but it does not reverse the effects of starvation or the inevitable blood rage, merely holds back the cravings for a day or so. A fed vampire may look like your average human, however when intense emotions are shown, or when feeding, their irises will turn crimson and their pupils constrict into catlike slits, and of course their fangs will be visible.

All vampires are immortal in the aspect that they cannot die from illness or aging, however they can still be killed by sunlight, decapitation, total destruction of the head, removal of the heart, or destruction of the heart. Any other injuries will regenerate depending on how recently they fed, a starved vampire will struggle to heal even the smallest injuries, but a fully gorged vampire could regenerate entire limbs in an hour or so.

The abilities a vampire innately has is, enhanced reflexes, speed, strength, enhanced senses, and night vision.

To turn a human into a vampire, they need to be completely exsanguinated and then made to drink a vampire's blood, it's not a process without risks however, as it can fail and either the human will stay dead, or they will become a mindless ghoul that has to be put down.

Notes on Lycanthropy.
Werewolves can vary drastically, but your average werewolf in their 'beast' form is around 7 foot tall, and can come in many different colours, but grey is the most common. In their human form, a werewolf will be harder to identify than a vampire, however a few traits such as more 'wolf-like' mannerisms, more muscle mass than your average human, and for those with more than human senses, the smell of dog, can be identify a Lycanthrope.

Before you could react, Estrid stabilised herself and hit you with a crushing blow to the chest with her elbow, not enough to do damage but certainly enough to knock you backwards, then lunged forward and suddenly circled behind you, and gave a mock punch to your chest, pinpointed where your heart is. Stepping back, she gave you an appraising stare. "Not too bad, if you did that to an enemy who had their back turned on you, or wasn't fast enough to react, you'd actually have a chance. But easily countered if an enemy is aware." Her voice held no pride at your 'success' but any praise is better than nothing.

"Now, again. This time, I'll try to defend myself. Not every enemy you face will be unaware." She slipped into position again, tensed and ready, her eyes dimly glowing crimson in the night.

Ambrose was startled by her hit and he staggered backwards, fighting to keep his balance. Once he had his footing, he huffed. Her praise didn't feel all that good. But still, he nodded as she got into position, taking a few moments to think up a plan.

His usual catch-them-by-surprise tactic wouldn't work here. She was watching his every move, and could see what he'd do. So instead... he might as well try something fresh.

He still had his bookbag slung over his chest. Moving quickly, he dashed first to one side before jumping backwards, giving him a shot at her back when she lunged for him - he grabbed the bag's strap and yanked it off, aiming at the back of her head. It swung and connected with a hardy thwump. Then he let the bag fall and jumped back to try and escape her grasp, seeing how she'd react.

Estrid stood there for a second, standing firm as she gave a genuine deep and velvety small chuckle, unlike the usually cold and emotionless demeanor she usually had up. "Well, that's one way to certainly surprise your enemy." She sobered once again, seeming to close off again. She stepped back and dropped into the fighting position once more. "Right, take what you've learnt tonight, and put it to use. I will not kill you, but I cannot guarantee I won't injure you. Imagine this was a real fight. What would you do?" She questioned, her steely gaze tracked on your every move once more, tense like a coiled spring.

Ambrose was breathing quickly as he nodded his head. At least this was almost over. Wiping the sweat from his forehead, he steadied his stance. His bag laid on the ground - he let it stay there, considering that she'd seen it in action already (and that he didn't want his books injured if it got to that).

He stared at her for a few moments. Finally, he lunged forward, feigning one way then rushing the other. End the fight as quickly as it began, he thought, remembering her earlier advice. He struck one hand out towards her hair and yanked it backwards, aiming a bite for her neck. He connected this time, and bit down, just hard enough to break skin a little, although his apprehension about getting punched still left him jittery.

Moving with deadly force, she pushed to grab onto your throat, her grip vice tight and crushingly hard. She yanked you away from her neck, and as you struggled to free your throat from her grip she thrust her knee straight into your stomach with a sickening thud. Barely staying standing, you staggered but she didn't miss a beat as she raised you off the ground up by your neck, squeezing and squeezing painfully until she finally let go, blueish purple bruises already blooming around your throat.

"Against a mortal, that would work. But against a werewolf or other vampire? They have brute strength on their side, far more than you have.." She criticised, not even batting an eyelid at the bruising she caused on you. "I went easy on you, as you are still a whelp. I have preparations I need to sort out. Go feed and get your strength back." She ordered before walking off into the town again, before disappearing leaving you there.

However, you can faintly feel that you're not alone, that you're being watched by something behind you.

Ambrose was caught off-guard and struggled helplessly as she spoke, kicking his legs in an attempt to hit her. He missed every blow. Falling, he curled up in the grass and waited for her to leave, closing his eyes tight until her footsteps faded away.

He felt stupid, thinking he could overpower her. He should've just gone for a real bite... maybe that would've shut her up. Groaning, he slowly sat up, rubbing at his injured neck. Hopefully no one at the inn would ask about it.

He figured he should head back to town, maybe poke around Walter's inn for food. Or maybe not, if Estrid was there. Either way, he needed to get his bookbag back - he didn't want any snakes crawling in there.

He stood up slowly, feeling his muscles ache from the sudden activity, and staggered over to pick up the bag. As he slung it over his shoulder, he realized something odd. He tilted his head to look around, feeling uneasy, like he was being watched. Suddenly he wished Estrid hadn't left.

"So, Estrid went easy on you, huh?" You suddenly heard, turning around to see Walter standing there, a small fleck of concern on his face but mainly masked by his playful tone. "Don't worry about it too much, Ambrose, I remember when she was training me.." He chuckled, walking over and helping you regain your balance. "I got so much criticism and so many bruises, but it was tough love." He reminisced, his eyes glazing over for a second.

His expression went slightly somber as a small understanding smile traced his lips. "If you need to feed, you can head to the Inn. Only way those bruises will heal quickly. And.. Don't get me wrong, you still look lovely, but you're kinda getting the whole.. Corpse look. Haven't fed for a few weeks, huh?" He joked, trying to lift the mood slightly from the dark and uncomfortable tone, his sharply bright blue eyes giving away his facade somewhat.

He jumped, but was relieved to see Walter. He nodded lazily as the man talked, exhausted from the training.

"Yeah. Been busy, I guess," he managed a chuckle in response to the question. "Thanks, though. I appreciate it. Wanna walk back with me?" He gestured over the grass in the direction of Rivercrest. The lights glowed distantly, somewhat blurred by a light mist that had settled in.

Walter nodded politely, giving a small smile. "Of course, I'd be glad for the company anyways." He gave a genuine smile, only now you noticed how sunken and tired his eyes looked, how pale and sickly his usually radiant skin was, bleached even lighter by the pale moonlight. "So, I really never asked this. Sorry if it's a.. Delicate question. But, how old actually are you? And don't worry, you can ask me the same, all of that about 'never asking a man his age' stuff doesn't apply after his first century." He chuckled as he walked alongside you.

His gait was similar to that of Estrid's however, even though he acted laid back, he looked like he could snap into action at any second, he was toned and powerful looking, like that of a knight's, criss-crossed with scars from his mortal life. Although he was certainly powerful, he seemed to radiate an aura of comfort almost, like a fatherly figure.

Ambrose smiled and began walking back to Rivercrest, glad to be beside Walter again. The man was good to be around - they'd known each other since he moved here.

"Must be... about fifty-four now. Not all that old, compared to others." Ambrose looked up at the sky, a dark expanse dappled with clouds. The moon was a silver crescent, almost half-full, and low on the horizon. "What about you?"

Walter gave a smirk. "Immortality really isn't a blessing unlike what most mortals think. I mean, I'm still young as vampires go anyways." He said almost bitterly before he perked up again when you asked, "Hm, I must be about one hundred and thirty-eight now? Estrid was my maker."

He chuckled fondly, but you could see it didn't reach his eyes. "She was the Commander of the Royal army then, I was a lieutenant. She was.. Similar to how she is now. Not quite so closed off, but she was still a force to reckoned with. We shared a battle bond, and became.. I suppose you could call us friends. As much as she'd deny it." He smiled as he reminisced, his eyes glazed over with a distant look.

"Really?" Ambrose turned, surprised, remembering Estrid's earlier remarks about killing whoever had turned him. It was weird to think she'd been a marker herself.

"The army... wow. I had no idea." He looked at the surrounding grass, and the conversation drifted into silence for a few moments, before he continued with, "Not to be rude, but I can't imagine you as an army man. You're so nice." He chuckled a bit.

"Well, it was a long time ago. Age will change a man" He sighed, giving another half smile as they walked. "What about you? What did you do in life?" He asked, clearly relieved to draw the topic away from him.

Rivercrest was not far off now, the stony cobbled walls of the houses and amenities in full view, even in the thick mist that had surrounded them.

Ambrose nodded as Walter spoke. "Not much," he admitted, "I was in training to work at a library. Was gonna be a clerk. I would've kept at it, but it closed at night." He shrugged and fiddled with the strap of his bag.

He was both relieved and saddened to see Rivercrest so close. He wanted to talk with Walter longer, wandering the fields beyond civilization, where the fog met the trees.

"Were you born in Rivercrest?" he asked suddenly.

Walter shook his head "No, I moved back here not long after I parted ways with Estrid, I did live here for a time as a mortal however, but I was born in Farncombe, a decent sized town far south of here - haven't been there since I was a lad." The mousy blonde haired man smiled, it looked so gentle and soothing it was almost hard to believe he was once a soldier, let alone a vampire.

"Say, as long as we stay close to town, we could continue talking for a while if you'd like, it's still a while before dawn." He smiled, he was clearly quite talkative and friendly, but something just seemed off about how he'd often trail off or go quite in stark contrast to his usually very talkative and chatty nature.
